ST. PAUL - Zach Sondreal and Gabe Rasmussen scored power-play goals 55 seconds apart in the second period as No. 1-2A Cretin-Derham Hall used a big edge in special teams to beat No. 1-1A Hermantown 4-2 on Thursday at Highland Arena in St. Paul.
Cretin-Derham Hall (6-2-0) led 2-1 late in the second when it killed a 5-on-3 power play for Hermantown that lasted for 1:21.
Hermantown took a 1-0 lead on Wyatt Carlson's first-period goal and tied it at 2-2 early in the third on a goal by Kade Kohanski.
Cretin-Derham Hall's Attila Lippai scored what proved to be the winner with 4:56 remaining. Jake Fisher scored an empty-net goal with 42 second left as the Raiders dealt the Hawks (6-1-0) their first loss of the season.
Cretin-Derham Hall's penalty killers were extremely effective in limiting Hermantown's chances during an extended 5-on-3 power play late in the second period, and when the Hawks did find an opening Raiders' goaltender Marko Belak was there to make the save.
Hermantown junior forward Zam Plante and Cretin-Derham Hall senior forward Jake Sondreal sat out the game with shoulder injuries. Hawks coach Pat Andrews said Plante, who has committed to Minnesota Duluth, could be back in the lineup by mid-January. Raiders coach Matt Funk said he expects Sondreal to return to the lineup in three or four weeks.
