Timeline: Region playoffs began in 1944-45 and continued through 1973-74. Section playoffs began in 1974-75 and continued through 1990-91. Sectional Tier I and Tier II playoffs were conducted from 1991-92 to 1992-93 and Sectional Class A and Class AA playoffs have been held since 1993-94. Region/Section 8 Notes: Private schools were invited to join the MSHSL beginning in 1974-75. This region, later section, consists of schools from northwest Minnesota. It has been dominated by Roseau for much of its existence. Between 1945 and 1991 the Rams have appeared in 32 title games and won the championship 26 times, including nine consecutive championships between 1961 and 1969. When Tier I and II, then Class AA and Class A hockey began in 1991-92, Moorhead emerged as one of the top programs in the section. Through 2020, the Spuds have won 17 section championships and appeared in 25 section finals. As for Class A, East Grand Forks, Thief River Falls and Warroad have won every section title since 1994. … Humble Beginnings: In 1944-45 Region Eight was the only region to actually conduct a playoff. The four-team event was played Feb. 8-9 at Thief River Falls. The participating schools were Hallock, Roseau, Thief River Falls and Williams. Admission was 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for students.
