RICHFIELD - Lincoln Ayers Assad scored twice, including the clincher into an empty net with 31 seconds remaining, as Holy Angels beat Wayzata 5-3 at Richfield Ice Arena on Wednesday, likely locking up the No. 3 seed in Section 6AA.
There were nine games played statewide, but this one undoubtedly had the biggest impact on the upcoming section playoffs.
No. 13-2A Holy Angels (15-6-0) led 3-1 midway through the second period and 4-2 early in the third.
McCoy Kurtz scored with 4:13 left to pull No. 12-2A Wayzata (10-10-2) to within 4-3. Drew Peterson scored a shorthanded goal with 1:49 left in the second as the Trojans closed to within 3-2.
Chase Russ, Cole Cheeseman and Carter Hunsaker also scored for Holy Angels, which figures to be seeded behind only No. 4-2A Edina and No. 7-2A Rogers.
VICTORIA - Logan Smith scored twice as Chanhassen outlasted Bloomington Jefferson 3-1 at the Victoria Recreation center in a matchup of two of the three teams at the top of the Metro West Conference standings.
Smith opened the scoring with the lone goal of the second period then scored an empty net goal with 2 seconds left to clinch the win for No. 19-2A Chanhassen (13-7-2). The Storm are 6-2-0 in conference play with 14 points. Bloomington Jefferson (15-5-2) is 5-3-1 in the Metro West with 15 points. Benilde-St. Margaret's also has 14 points in league play.
Kalen Balliet also scored for Chanhassen. Blake Dosan scored a power-play goal late in the third period to pull the Jaguars to within 2-1.
HOPKINS - Hopkins built a big third-period lead then had to survive a late St. Paul rally to eke out a 4-3 win at the Hopkins Pavilion Ice Arena.
Colin Frodermann scored twice for Hopkins (6-15-1). Kirill Udaltsov's goal with 7:11 remaining put the Royals ahead 4-1.
Cael Rixen scored twice in the final 1:02 as St. Paul (4-15-2) rallied.
Hopkins unloaded 42 shots on St. Paul goaltender Max Johnson. The Royals' Dylan Lindstrom made 24 saves.
EAST BETHEL - Standout defenseman Nicklas Nelson scored twice as Monticello cruised past Northern Edge 4-0 at the East Bethel Ice Arena.
Nelson, a junior committed to UConn, opened the scoring 5:19 into the first period and his second goal made it 4-0 late in the third.
Carter Lemke and Clyde Middleton also scored for No. 9-1A Monticello (15-4-3). Lemke, a senior, leads the Moose with 17 goals. Nolan Wurm made 15 saves for his fourth shutout of the season.
Gage Husby made 60 saves for Northern Edge (10-10-1).
