Hockey Night: Late goal lifts Hibbing past Bemidji

Feb. 2: Hunter Gustavsson scores winner for Bluejackets; Sartell rallies to beat Totino-Grace; Alexandria, Windom win by 1-0 scores

Hibbing/Chisholm 4, Bemidji 3

BEMIDJI - Senior forward Hunter Gustavsson's late goal powered Hibbing/Chisholm past Bemidji 4-3 on Monday at the Bemidji Community Arena.

Gustavsson fired a low shot from the top of the face-off circles that eluded standout Bemidji goaltender Christian Hill. The goal, which came with 6:32 left in the third, was set up by a turnover at the blue line and a passing play that included Joe Gabardi and Ben Galli. It was just the second goal of the season for Gustavsson.

Wesley Truax pulled Bemidji (10-10-1) into a 3-3 tie less than 2 minutes before Gustavsson's goal. 

Jackson Strukel scored twice for No. 2-1A Hibbing/Chisholm (19-2-2).

Sartell 4, Totino-Grace 2

BROOKLYN PARK - Sartell erupted for three unanswered goals in the third period, including two from junior defenseman Isaac Mentzer, as it rallied past Totino-Grace 4-2 at the Brooklyn Park Community Center.

Gus Hay scored for Totino-Grace (14-7-0) with 4:02 left in the second to put the Eagles ahead 2-1.

Devin Jacobs capped the scoring with an empty-net goal with 43 seconds left. Jacobs is tied for sixth in the state in scoring with 61 points.

No. 6-1A Sartell improved to 18-3-0.

Prairie Centre 5, Breckenridge/Wahpeton 4

SAUK CENTRE - Senior forward James Rieland and senior defenseman Hagen Brunkhorst each scored twice as Prairie Centre outlasted Breckenridge/Wahpeton 5-4 at the Sauk Centre Civic Arena in a showdown of top West Central Conference teams.

Reiland's power-play goal with 5:20 remaining put the North Stars (15-6-0) ahead 5-4 and proved to be the winner. The goal was Rieland's 24th of the season.

Kai McDonald scored for Breckenridge/Wahpeton (9-9-1) with 39 seconds left.  

The victory assures Prairie Centre of the West Central title.

Alexandria 1, Little Falls 0

ALEXANDRIA - Alexandria's William Thornburg scored the lone goal with 2:36 remaining as the Cardinals beat Little Falls and standout goaltender Izaak Kalis 1-0 at the PrimeWest Health Runestone Community Center.

Thornburg skated behind the Little Falls net and whipped a low wraparound shot that beat Kalis, who finished with 55 saves.

Alexandria goaltender Brady Schluter finished with 17 saves.

The Cardinals improved to 9-12-0, the Flyers dropped to 4-16-0.

Windom 1, Fairmont 0

WINDOM - Andrei Rivera's goal in the second period held up as the game winner as Windom defeated Fairmont 1-0 at Windom Arena.

After winning the face-off, Rivera worked his way to the front of the net and his backhand shot eluded Fairmont goalie Brandon Hector.

Kole Espenson made 25 saves for Windom (7-14-0). Hector made 29 saves for Fairmont (6-12-0).

Roseau 4, Thief River Falls 1

ROSEAU - Tyler George scored twice as Roseau scored the game's final four goals in a 4-1 win over Thief River Falls at Roseau Memorial Arena.

George, a junior forward, is tied for the team scoring lead with 22 points for the Rams (8-12-2).

Ian Winter gave the Prowlers (10-12-0) a 1-0 lead by scoring with 2:11 left in the first.

Tanner Paulson tied it for Roseau midway through the the second. Heath Bauger scored the Rams' go-ahead goal 4:18 into the third. George's first goal came with 5:43 remaining and his second came in the final minute.

Brendan Simmons made 20 saves for the Rams while Cooper Roff stopped 37 shots for Thief River Falls.
