MOORHEAD - Some stick handling magic and a few well-timed head fakes allowed Tyden Bergeson to score the winning goal late in the third period of Moorhead's 5-4 victory against Hermantown on Saturday at the Moorhead Sports Center.
Hermantown, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 1A, and Moorhead, ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, exchanged goals and highlight reel moments throughout. The score was 2-2 after the first period and 3-3 after the second. Neither team led by more than a goal.
Senior Brandon Mickelson, the state's second-leading scorer among defensemen with 44 points, scored twice on power plays for the Spuds (17-2-1).
Junior Beau Christy scored twice for Hermantown (16-3-3). Christy's second goal came with 7:47 remaining and tied the score at 4-4. Christy has seven goals in his last three games.
Moorhead unloaded 41 shots on Hermantown goaltender Bryce Francisco. Moorhead's Will Arnold made 15 saves.
BUFFALO - Tommy Colmenero's goal 2:28 into overtime lifted Wayzata to a 1-0 victory over Buffalo at the Buffalo Civic Center in a game otherwise dominated by the goaltenders.
Colmenro jammed home the rebound of Kruz Sauer's initial shot to boost No. 12-2A Wayzata (10-9-2) to the win. The goal was the eighth of the season for Colmenero, a senior forward.
Junior Logan Preugschas made 29 saves for Buffalo (8-13-0). Senior Ryan Pellinger had 23 stops for Wayzata. The shutout was the third of the season, and second in three starts, for Pellinger.
CROSBY - Jude Gehring's goal with 1:26 left in the second held up as the game winner as No. 15-1A Waseca recorded a 4-2 win over No. 14-1A Northern Lakes at the Hallett Community Center.
Gehring, a senior forward, is third on the Bluejays (14-5-2) with 17 goals. Waseca is 9-1-2 in its last 12 games.
Northern Lakes (11-9-1) led 2-1 after the first period as goals by Waylon Katterhagen and Huck Balmer sandwiched a goal by Waseca's Henry Huttemier.
Otto Schoenrock tied the game for the Bluejays 4:07 into the second. Gehring completed the scoring midway through the third.
MONTICELLO - Cohen Kass' shot from outside the left circle gave No. 9-1A Monticello a 2-1 win over Minneapolis at Moose Sherritt Ice Arena.
Minneapolis (10-10-1) grabbed the early lead on Ryan Mullen's goal 6:23 into the contest. Carter Lemke tied the game for the Moose (14-4-3) when he scored with 44 seconds left in the first.
Nolan Wurm made 24 saves for Monticello.
HUTCHINSON - Sophomore forward Austin Carter scored with 1:07 left in overtime to lift Hutchinson past Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 2-1 in front of a near-capacity crowd at Burich Arena, touching off a wild celebration among the Tigers players and in the stands by their fans
The jubilation was befitting one of the state's most underrated rivalries, as the the neighboring teams always ratchet up the intensity when squaring off.
Carter grabbed the puck along the left boards then eluded a Dragons defenseman and beat goaltender Griffin Niska. The goal was Carter's second of the season and first since Dec. 2.
The win was the second of the season for Hutchinson (2-19-0), which plays the Dragons (12-10-0) again on Feb. 10 in Litchfield.
INTERNATIONAL FALLS - Gage Wallander recorded a two goals and an assist as No. 19-1A International Falls used three third-period goals to record a 5-3 win over Crookston at Bronco Arena. The Broncos have won their last seven games.
After a scoreless first, William Yerxa gave the Broncos (16-1-2) a 1-0 lead before Gavin Aakhus tied the game for Crookston (13-8-1). Yerxa is tied for sixth in the state with 30 goals.
Chase Phillips gave International Falls a 2-1 lead after the second before Wallander scored his first goal 2:44 into the third.
Greyson Ecker scored on the power play for the Pirates before Andrew Eide and Wallander scored 76 seconds apart to give the Broncos a 5-2 lead.
Garrett Fischer, the state's leading goal scorer with 36, added a goal with 3:10 remaining for the Pirates.
International Falls senior Anthony Yerxa, who ranks third in the state with 69 points, sat out the second straight game. He required stitches when a teammate stepped on his toes before Friday's game against Red Lake Falls. Yerxa is expected to be back in the lineup next week.
ST. CLOUD - Will Cymbaluk had two goals and a pair of assists as Detroit Lakes defeated No. 13-1A St. Cloud Cathedral 4-2 at the Municipal Athletic Complex.
The Crusaders (12-10-0) had a 1-0 lead after Elijah Van Heel's goal with 20 seconds remaining in the opening period.
Sully Braten tied the game for Detroit Lakes (13-8-0) with 6:49 left in the second. Easton Kennedy's power-play goal gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead.
Cymbaluk, who leads Detroit Lakes with 25 assists, scored twice in the final 4:13 to complete the scoring.
DELANO - Lance Halonen's power-play goal with 3:13 left in the second period held up as the game winner as Delano defeated Holy Family 5-4 in a rivalry matchup at the Delano Area Sports Arena.
Brady Kangas gave No. 5-1A Delano a hot early start by scoring 34 seconds into the game. Daniel Halonen added a goal nearly three minutes later to give the Tigers (16-4-1) a 2-0 lead.
Lance Halonen scored midway through the second period to push the lead to 3-0 before Daniel Halonen, who ranks third in the state with 34 goals, added another goal two minutes later.
No. 20-2A Holy Family scored twice in 21 seconds to cut the lead to 4-2 before Lance Halonen's power-play goal.
Ryder Sorenson scored his second goal of the night to open scoring in the third for the Fire (10-11-0). Joey Weyandt's second goal of the night completed the scoring.
