LINDSTROM - Jackson Chesak stopped 23 of 24 shots and Vinny Redpath's power-play goal in the third period put Mahtomedi comfortably ahead Tuesday as it beat Chisago Lakes 4-1 at the Chisago Lakes Ice Arena in a game that likely settled the order of the top two seeds in the upcoming Section 4A playoffs.
No. 4-1A Mahtomedi (11-8-2) built a 3-0 lead by the latter stages of the second period. That's when Austin Slettom scored to pull No. 16-1A Chisago Lakes to within 3-1.
Redpath's goal, his team-leading 13th of the season, put Mahtomedi ahead 4-1 with 2:01 remaining.
The teams have met for the section championship three of the last four years, with Mahtomedi winning each time.
MOORHEAD - Moorhead scored the final four goals, including two from Evan Wanner as he completed his hat trick, to rally past East Grand Forks 5-2 in a matchup of defending state champions (Moorhead in Class 2A, East Grand Forks in Class 1A).
East Grand Forks' Nolan Meulebroeck scored the lone goal of the first period. Wanner countered with the lone goal of the second.
Tucker Lovejoy's shorthanded goal midway through the third period put No. 11-1A East Grand Forks (9-10-1) ahead 2-1.
Wanner and Tyden Bergeson scored less than 2 minutes apart to put No. 2-2A Moorhead (16-2-1) ahead 3-2. The Spuds' final two goals were empty netters.
MINNEAPOLIS - Owen Van Horn scored twice midway through the second period as Breck held off Minneapolis 3-2 as first-year Breck coach Joe Dziedzic faced the team he had coached previously for 13 seasons.
Van Horn's two goals turned a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 advantage for the No. 11-1A Mustangs (14-5-1). Eli Milinkovich, who played for Minneapolis last season, had three assists for Breck.
Will Anderson scored with nine seconds left as Minneapolis (9-9-1) pulled to within a goal.
BREEZY POINT - St. Cloud Cathedral scored four unanswered goals in the second period, just enough for the Crusaders to secure a 6-4 win over Northern Lakes at the Breezy Point Ice Arena.
Bo Schmidt scored twice and had an assist in the second period for No. 13-1A St. Cloud Cathedral (11-9-0) as built a 6-2 lead en route to sweeping the teams' regular season series. The Crusaders beat Northern Lakes 3-1 on Jan. 16.
No. 14-1A Northern Lakes (10-8-1) got power-play goals from Josiah Reier and Parker Fulton in the third period.
MANKATO - Mankato West scored all five of its goals in the second period, including the last two from senior Isaac Ullman, as it cruised past intracity rival Mankato East 5-0 at All Seasons Arena to sweep the teams' regular season series.
Mankato West's Mason Schreiber made 22 saves to earn the shutout, his second of the season.
Mankato West (11-1-0) beat Mankato East (9-10-0) 6-2 on Jan. 13.
HIBBING - Tate Swanson and Whitaker Rewertz each had two goals as Hibbing/Chisholm defeated Rock Ridge 6-3 at the Hibbing Memorial Building.
The teams were tied 2-2 midway through the second period before Blake Riccio gave No. 2-1A Hibbing/Chisholm a 3-2 lead with 5:32 left. Swanson then scored with 3:45 remaining and again with 47 seconds left to push the lead to 5-2.
Rewertz added a pair of assists to go with his two goals for the Bluejackets (17-2-2). Swanson leads Hibbing/Chisholm with 49 points.
Colton Bialke recorded a goal and two assists for Rock Ridge (10-11-0).
