Hockey Night: Edina tops Wayzata in OT

Jan. 22: Tucker Johnson scores winning goal for Hornets; St. Thomas Academy's top line rolls past Mahtomedi; Northfield too much for Breck

Edina 5, Wayzata 4 OT

EDINA - Senior forward Tucker Johnson scored 3:20 into overtime to lift Edina past Section 6AA rival and Lake Conference foe Wayzata 5-4 on a frigid Thursday night at Braemar Arena.

Johnson jammed home the rebound of his initial shot then summoned the energy to race the length of the ice to the Hornets' student section for his post-goal celebration. The goal was Johnson's 12th of the season and third game-winner.

The teams have met in the Section 6AA title game each of the past three seasons, and a fourth straight section championship showdown could be looming.

No. 4-2A Edina (14-5-0) held leads of 2-1 and 3-2. No. 13-2A Wayzata ( 7-9-2)  held leads of 1-0 and 4-3. Becker Wenkus' goal midway through the third tied the score at 4-4. The score was also tied at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3.

Edina's Bode McConnell scored his 24th and 25th goals of the season to up his season total to 25, seventh most in the the state. Christopher Pyle had a goal and an assist for Wayzata.

St. Thomas Academy 4, Mahtomedi 1

STILLWATER - Maverick McKinnon, the state's top-scoring freshman, had two goals and an assist to lead St. Thomas Academy past Mahtomedi 4-1 in a matchup of the No. 3 teams in the state in their respective classes at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

McKinnon scored 3:57 into the second period to put No. 3-2A St. Thomas Academy (13-4-2) ahead 2-0 and closed out the scoring in the third with 2:57 left. He ranks second on the team in both points (47) and goals (19).

The Cadets' top line of McKinnon, Cole Braushausen and Will Mikan scored all four of the team's goals.

Cody Loida scored the lone goal for No. 3-1A Mahtomedi (10-7-2).

Northfield 6, Breck 3

GOLDEN VALLEY - Northfield scored four of the last five goals as it raced past Breck 6-3 in a showdown of top-ranked Class 1A teams at Anderson Ice Arena.

Northfield's Bridger Riley scored late in the first to tie the score at 2-2, and the Raiders added goals from Henry Webber and Philip Benjamin to take a 4-2 lead with 5:20 left in the second.

Erik Larson's power-play goal pulled No. 11-1A Breck (13-5-1) to within 4-3 late in the second. No. 7-1A Northfield (14-2-0) closed out the win with third-period goals from Miles Kennelly and Charlie Becker.

The Raiders have won five straight and nine of their last 10. The loss halted Breck's six-game unbeaten streak.

Lakeville South 4, Eastview 3 OT

APPLE VALLEY - Junior forward Ashton Lawrence scored 3:19 into overtime as Lakeville South rallied to beat Eastview 4-3 at the Apple Valley Sports Arena.

Lakeville South senior Carter Ernst forced the extra session by scoring with 5:27 left in regulation. Ernst, the Cougars' top scorer with 27 points, also had two assists.

Eastview (7-12-0) scored three unanswered goals, starting late in the first period and including all of the second, to take a 3-2 lead.

Keaton LeGrande made 33 saves for No. 16-2A Lakeville South (8-8-1). Charlie Scanlon had 42 stops for the Lightning.

Eagan 5, Minneapolis 4

EAGAN - Ben Williams' second goal of the night came 4:27 into the third period and it held up as the game winner as Eagan defeated Minneapolis 5-4 at the Eagan Civic Arena. Williams, a junior forward, leads the Wildcats with 13 goals.

The teams combined for seven goals in the first as the Wildcats (9-9-1) led 4-3. Williams, Brody Kryzer, Blake Pavek and Liam Thomas scored in the first for Eagan while Emmitt Anderson, Marshall Claeson and Will Ackerman scored for Minneapolis (8-8-1).

Minneapolis' Jack Shroat tied the game 4-4 early in the second.

Rochester Lourdes 3, Winona 0

WINONA - Anton Ackley recorded his fifth shutout of the season and was credited with an assist as Rochester Lourdes defeated Winona 3-0 at the Bud King Ice Arena.

Ackley, a senior goalie, has two assists and 10 wins for No. 17-1A Rochester Lourdes.

Michael Norman scored in the first for the Eagles (12-4-1) while Vinny Harens and Jack Phillips added power-play goals during a major penalty in the second.

Seth Watkins made 40 saves for Winona (9-7-0).

Totino-Grace 3, Andover 2

ANDOVER - Totino-Grace scored three times in the second, including two goals 25 seconds apart, as it defeated Andover 3-2 at the Andover Community Center. The win was Tim Parkos' 100th leading Totino-Grace.

Andover (6-11-3) led after the first period on Jack Rykkeli's power-play goal. Totino-Grace (12-5-0) tied the contest with Tyler Westphal's goal 2:49 into the second.

The Eagles took the lead with 9:34 left in the second on Chase Morgan's goal and Nolan Mason scored 25 seconds later to extend the lead to 3-1.

Brody Peterson scored in the third for the Huskies.

Elk River/Zimmerman 4, Centennial 1

ELK RIVER - Graham Karlsen made 32 saves and Elk River/Zimmerman recorded at least one goal in each period as the Elks defeated Centennial 4-1 at the Furniture and Things Community Event Center.

Michael Jackson gave the Elks (11-5-1) the lead 5:25 into the game and teammates Rylan Hanson and Logan Dahlberg added goals in the second for a 3-0 lead.

Luke Patrow completed the Elk River/Zimmerman scoring midway in the third.

Isaak Adams scored for Centennial (9-8-0).

The win was Elk River/Zimmerman head coach Ben Gustafson's 145th in 10 seasons with the program.
