Hockey Night: Shakopee slips past Rosemount

Jan. 20: Cole Davis scores the lone goal in Sabers' victory; Grand Forks Central upends Moorhead; Holy Angels, Bagley/Fosston, Northern Lakes win in OT

Shakopee 1, Rosemount 0

ROSEMOUNT - Junior forward Cole Davis scored the lone goal and junior goaltender Logan Avery stopped 30 shots as Shakopee beat Rosemount 1-0 on Tuesday in a meeting of South Suburban Conference frontrunners and top-10 Class 2A teams at Rosemount Ice Arena.

Davis scored midway through the second period, completing a high-speed rush into the Rosemount zone by tucking the puck behind Irish goaltender Drew Sherman just before slamming into the right goalpost. The goal was Davis' fifth of the season.

Avery was making his second start of the season, both of which have ended in shutouts.

No. 5-2A Shakopee (15-3-0) remained unbeaten in conference play at 8-0-0. No. 8-2A Rosemount (14-2-1) dropped to 6-2-0 in the conference.

Shakopee beat Rosemount 2-1 in Shakopee on Dec. 4.

Grand Forks Central (N.D.) 5, Moorhead 4 OT

MOORHEAD - Gavin Wockenfuss scored 56 seconds into overtime as defending North Dakota state champion Grand Forks Central beat defending state Class 2A champion Moorhead 5-4 at the Moorhead Sports Center.

Grand Forks Central (10-2-2) led 3-1 entering the third period, when Moorhead rallied to take a 4-3 lead with 2:28 remaining on a goal by Brandon Mickelson. 

Central's Nolan Marto scored with 1:25 left to force the extra period and assisted on Wockenfuss' game winner. Marto also scored with 46 seconds left in the second period to put the Knights ahead 3-1.

The loss was just the second of the season for No. 2-2A Moorhead (15-2-1), which had its eight-game unbeaten streak snapped.

Tyden Bergeson, Zak Devig and Evan Wanner also scored for the Spuds.

East Ridge 3, Cretin-Derham Hall 2

COTTAGE GROVE - Senior forward Matthew Taverna's shorthanded goal midway through the third period held up as the game winner as unranked East Ridge upended No. 10-ranked (Class 2A) Cretin-Derham Hall 3-2 at Cottage Grove Ice Arena.

Ivan Schmitz set up the winning goal by racing out of the East Ridge defensive zone on a 2-on-2 rush with Taverna. Schmitz sent a pass through the low slot to Taverna, whose one-timer attempt was stopped by Ernie Drury. However, the puck popped out of Drury's pads and into the slot, where Taverna backhanded it into an open net.

The goal was the third of the season and sixth of the career for Taverna. 

Torin Tompkins scored the lone goal of the first period for Cretin-Derham Hall (13-6-0), and Marcus Matyas' goal early in the second period put the Raiders ahead 2-1 heading into the third.

Emery Miller pulled the Raptors (7-9-0) into a 2-2 tie 32 seconds into the third period.

Drake Limpert made 28 saves to earn the victory for East Ridge. Ernie Drury had 24 stops for Cretin-Derham Hall.

Holy Angels 3, Prior Lake 2 OT

PRIOR LAKE - Senior forward Lincoln Ayers Assad scored in the final minute to force overtime and again in the extra session to lift Holy Angels to a 3-2 victory over Prior Lake at Dakotah! Ice Center.

Jack Willmert and Hudson Young scored in the third period to put Prior Lake (4-10-2) ahead 2-1. 

Ayers Assad scored with 55 seconds left in regulation. His OT goal came with 1:18 left on the clock. Ayers Assad leads No. 12-2A Holy Angels (10-6-0) with 21 goals.

Forest Lake 4, Stillwater 4 OT

STILLWATER - Joe Howe had a goal and two assists for Stillwater and Zachary Schnabel made 42 saves for Forest Lake as the teams skated to a 4-4 overtime tie in a Suburban East Conference matchup at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

Keegan Corey's shorthanded goal early in the third period capped the scoring and pulled Forest Lake (11-7-1) into a 4-4 tie.

Logan Vickery, Elliot Hursh and Nate Peterson scored consecutive goals early the second period as Forest Lake surged to a 3-1 lead. 

No. 11-2A Stillwater (11-5-1) answered with three straight goals from Howe, Wells and Michael Belde (his second of the game) spanning parts of the second and third periods to take its 4-3 lead.

Providence Academy 7, Monticello 2

PLYMOUTH - Jay Anderson scored twice on power plays and Owen Villagomez stopped 29 of 31 shots as unranked Providence Academy upended No. 8-ranked (Class 1A) Monticello 7-2 at Plymouth Ice Arena.

The Lions (7-10-2) engineered the upset via their special teams. They went 4-for-6 on power plays while holding Monticello (11-4-3) to 0-for-3 on the power play.

Providence Academy led 2-0 after the first period and 5-1 heading into the third.

Monticello has gone 1-2-1 after having its a nine-game winning streak snapped in a Jan. 10 loss to St. Cloud Cathedral.

Eden Prairie 3, White Bear Lake 2

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - RJ Thompson and William Jesse Tucker scored third-period goals to lift Eden Prairie to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over White Bear Lake at the TCO Sports Garden.

Nash Roed scored twice for No. 17-2A White Bear Lake (8-8-1). His second goal put the Bears ahead 2-1 entering the third period. 

Thompson, who ranks third in the state in scoring among freshmen with 33 points, scored with 7:14 remaining to pull the No. 18-2A Eagles (9-8-1) into a 2-2 tie. Tucker scored his first goal of the season with 2:32 remaining.

Bagley/Fosston 5, Red Lake Falls 4 OT

BAGLEY - Bagley/Fosston, which ranks third in the state in total goals, needed all of its offensive firepower to slip past Red Lake Falls 5-4 in overtime at Bagley Youth Hockey Arena.

The Flyers (13-4-0) scored the final four goals, including Logan Dillich's winner with 1:14 left in overtime, to rally for the victory.

Colby Knott scored twice for Red Lake Falls (11-6-0) as it took a 4-1 led into the third period. 

James Palmer scored twice in the third period as Bagley/Fosston rallied to force the extra period. Palmer ranks second in the state with 58 points. Dillich is fourth with 55 points.

Only Luverne and International Falls have more goals than the Flyers.

Northern Lakes 1, Bemidji 0 OT

BREEZY POINT - Sam Suja stopped all 40 shots he faced as Northern Lakes slipped past Bemidji 1-0 in overtime at Breezy Point Ice Arena.

Parker Fulton scored with 31 seconds left in overtime to give No. 13-1A Northern Lakes (10-6-1) the victory.

Jack Norgaard made 34 saves for Bemidji (8-8-1).
