ANDOVER - The last of the Saturday's 48 games was easily one of the best, as unranked Andover gave No. 2 Moorhead all it could handle before the defending state Class 2A champion Spuds completed a late rally with a 5-4 overtime victory at the Andover Community Center.
Senior defenseman Brandon Mickelson scored 35 seconds into the extra session as Moorhead averted the upset loss. Mickelson, the state's top-scoring defenseman, alertly trailed a Spuds' rush into the Andover defensive zone and one-timed a feed for his 13th goal of the season.
Andover (6-8-3) scored three unanswered goals in the second period, including two from junior forward Will Thackeray, as it took a 3-0 lead into the third.
Moorhead (14-1-1) scored twice in the opening 5:21 of the third, but Andover took a 4-2 lead in the third on a Cooper Johannsen's goal with 11:15 left in regulation.
Max Cullen scored back-to-back goals for Moorhead in the third to force the extra session.
WASECA - Sophomore Ayden Kath scored 1:25 into overtime as Waseca secured a 5-4 victory over Big South Conference rival Luverne at the Waseca Community Arena in a matchup of the Nos. 17- and 19-ranked teams in Class 1A.
Kath and Griffen Storey exchanged multiple passes along the boards in the Luverne zone, with Kath eventually breaking to the slot in time to one-time a feed from Storey. Kath's blast beat Luverne goaltender Gavin Hoven low, just inside the left post.
Luverne beat Waseca 4-2 on Dec. 13 in Luverne. But the No. 17-1A Cardinals (15-3-0) trailed by at least a goal starting midway through the first period until Ricky Rogers scored with 1:02 left to tie it at 4-4.
Jude Gehring opened the scoring in the first period and scored again 7:08 into the second to put No. 19-1A Waseca (11-4-1) ahead 3-1. Will Bergman scored twice in a span of 15 seconds midway through the second as the Cardinals tied it at 3-3.
Luverne tops the Big South standings with 18 points, two more than Waseca, which has played one fewer game.
MINNETONKA - Cash Hardie scored twice and Chase Jerdee stopped 15 of 16 shots as top-ranked Minnetonka cruised past Maple Grove 4-2 at the Pagel Activity Center.
Hardie, a sophomore who shares the Skippers' lead in goals with 11, scored the lone goal of the first period. He put No. 1-2A Minnetonka (15-1-1) ahead 3-1 with a power-play goal with 7:45 left in the second.
Boone Chartier extended the Skippers' lead to 4-1, scoring 2:35 into the third period.
Wyatt Kuznik and Thomas Picconatto scored for No. 8-2A Maple Grove (10-5-1), a newcomer to the Lake Conference. The Crimson had their six-game unbeaten streak snapped on Thursday in a 5-4 loss to conference foe Edina.
HASTINGS - Rosemount recorded six unanswered goals as their won the meeting of ranked teams by a 6-1 decision in part of the Hockey Day Minnesota outdoor game series at the Scheels Rink at United Heroes League.
Cole Cheeseman scored on the power play to give No. 11-2A Holy Angels a 1-0 lead midway through the first. Cade Sherman scored with 20 seconds left in the period for No. 9-2A Rosemount to tie it,
Avery Hanowski scored 42 seconds into the second to record the eventual game winner for the Irish (13-3-1).
Six players scored goals for Rosemount. Connor Schubert who had a goal, had two assists as did Graham Glafton.
Sam Clements, Aidan Finn and Drew Sherman combined for the shutout.
George Sill and Will Cariveau split time in net for Holy Angels (9-6-0).
PROCTOR - Northern Lakes has been involved in some wild finishes this season, and Saturday's matchup with Proctor offered more of the same.
Five goals were scored in the final period, including two in the final 77 seconds, as Northern Lakes beat Proctor 6-5 at the St. Luke's Sports and Event Center on Josiah Reier's goal with 51 seconds remaining.
The goal was the second of the game and 11th of the season for Reier, a junior forward. Three of his goals have been game winners.
Proctor senior Wynn Giswold scored with 1:17 left to tie the score at 5-5. The goal was Giswold's second of the game and fourth of the season.
Parker Fulton registered a hat trick for No. 13-1A Northern Lakes (9-6-1). Freshman scoring sensation Jax Hardy had a goal and three assists for No. 20-1A Proctor (10-8-1), giving him a team-leading 32 points. He entered the night tied with Eden Prairie's RJ Thompson for third in the state in scoring among freshmen.
Northern Lakes won a similar game by an identical score on Jan. 2, beating host Chisago Lakes 6-5 in Lindstrom. Five goals were scored in the final period of that matchup, including the final three in the closing minutes by Northern Lakes.
HIBBING - Tate Swanson's backhand shot with 1:13 remaining in regulation gave Hibbing/Chisholm a 5-4 win over Orono at the Hibbing Memorial Building.
No. 1-1A Hibbing/Chisholm led 4-1 early in the third period but No. 15-1A Orono rallied behind two goals by Jackson Knight and one by Jake Thalhuber to tie the game with 7:25 left.
Swanson took a feed from Isaiah Hildenbrand and cut across the goal before firing his backhand for the game winner. Swanson has 17 goals this season for the Bluejackets (14-2-1), tying him with Cole Swanson for the team lead.
Knight had a hat trick for Orono (5-9-3).

VIRGINIA - Calvin O'Reilly took a feed and scored from the left side of the goal to give Lakeville South a 3-2 overtime win over Rock Ridge at the Iron Trail Motors and Event Center.
No. 16-2A Lakeville South evened the score with 2:20 left in regulation on O'Reilly's first goal of the night.
Rock Ridge (9-9-0) had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 following goals by Jacob Coombe and Caz Carlson. Landon Mathison assisted on both goals.
Eli Swanson made 32 saves for the Cougars (7-8-1).
HASTINGS - Rochester Century/John Marshall scored the game's first three goals and defeated Rochester Mayo 3-1 in an outdoor game at the Scheels Rink at United Heroes League as the Rochester schools took their rivalry on the road.
Hatcher Hodge and Drake Waters each had a goal and an assist for Rochester Century/John Marshall (5-10-0).
Max Gargollo scored in the third for Mayo (6-10-0).
GRAND RAPIDS - Brady Morrell scored from the slot with 16 seconds remaining to give Hill-Murray a 3-2 win over Grand Rapids at Yanmar Arena.
Morrell took a feed from Landon Sampair and his left-handed shot found the back of the net.
No. 6-2A Hill-Murray had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 after goals by Landon Sampair and Ryland DeMars but Grand Rapids (7-11-1) kept fighting back.
Nate Garski and Will Shermoen each scored on the power play to rally the Thunderhawks.
The Pioneers (12-3-2) outshot Grand Rapids, 44-22. Morrell (12), Sampair (11) and DeMars (10) are Hill-Murray's leading goal scorers.
GOLDEN VALLEY - Breck scored 12 seconds into the game and didn't look back in defeating Gentry Academy 4-2 at the Anderson Ice Arena. The Mustangs are 4-0-1 in their last five games.
No. 11-1A Breck took the lead 12 seconds into the contest on Owen Van Horn's goal. Garrett Trench, who assisted on Van Horn's goal, scored with 6:47 left in the period to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
Eli Milinkovich, who finished the night with three assists, socred on the power play to give Breck (12-4-1) a 3-0 lead 3:46 into the second.
Gentry Academy (7-8-1) rallied behind goals by Sid O'Connor and Jaxon Cook but Breck's Colten Crook's empty-net goal completed the scoring.
