ST. CLOUD - Senior forward Caleb Trant's goal midway through the second period proved to be the game winner as St. Cloud Cathedral beat Northern Lakes 3-1 at the Municipal Athletic Complex in a matchup of the No. 13- and 14-ranked teams in Class 1A, both of which reached the state tournament last season.
Trant, stationed in the slot directly in front of Northern Lakes goaltender Sam Suja, redirected a pass from Griffin Sturm into the net to put the No. 14-1A Crusaders (8-8-0) ahead 2-1 with 8:13 left in the second period.
Sturm, a senior defenseman, added an empty-net goal with 1:00 remaining. He leads St. Cloud Cathedral with 12 assists and ranks second in points with 18.
After a scoreless first period, Cathedral's Brendan White and Northern Lakes' Huck Balmer scored goals 21 seconds apart early in the second.
St. Cloud Cathedral lost 2-1 in overtime to East Grand Forks in last season's state Class 1A championship game. No. 13-1A Northern Lakes (8-6-1) lost 4-0 to Northfield in the consolation championship.
CLOQUET - Jordy Sewell scored three goals, two shorthanded and one on a power play, as Cloquet/Esko/Carlton cruised past Orono 7-2 at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center.
Sewell's two shorthanded goals came in the second period. He scored the second one with 32 seconds left, putting the No. 9-1A Lumberjacks (10-8-0) ahead 4-1 entering the third.
Sewell also had two assists. He leads the Lumberjacks with 31 points, tied for fifth-most in the state among sophomores. His 18 goals are the third most among state sophomores, behind only James palmer of Bagley/Fosston (21) and Jaxon Cook of Gentry Academy (19).
Five of the game's nine goals were scored on special teams, including three shorthanded goals.
LITTLE FALLS - Tucker Knott scored 3:58 into overtime and state goal-scoring leader Spencer Anderson added two goals as Thief River Falls rallied past Little Falls 4-3 at Exchange Arena.
Knott grabbed a loose puck to the left of the net and fired it high into the far right corner. The goal came 3:58 into the extra session and gave the Prowlers (9-7-1) their eighth win in their last nine games after starting 1-6-1.
Remi Chisholm scored on a penalty shot with 2:14 left in the second period to put Little Falls (3-11-0) ahead 2-1. He scored again with 2:34 left in the third to forced the overtime session.
Anderson's two goals give him a state-best 32, five more than International Falls senior Anthony Yerxa's 27.
MINNEAPOLIS - Will Ackerman's goal with 6:27 left to play gave Minneapolis a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Austin at the Parade Ice Garden.
After Austin's Alex Whipple scored in the first period, Minneapolis (8-6-1) scored the second period's first two goals, courtesy of Wilson Lamberty and Theo Gustin.
Kade Overocker scored on the power play for Austin (3-13-0) with 4:47 remaining in the period to tie it at 2-2.
Isaac Anderson gave the Packers a 3-2 lead 76 seconds into the third. Emmitt Anderson answered for Minneapolis 66 seconds later, setting the stage for Ackerman's game winner.
Ryan Mulen had three assists for Minneapolis.
ROSEAU - Cameron Knott's goal with 10:54 left in the second period held up as the game winner as Bemidji defeated Roseau 2-1 at Roseau Memorial Arena.
The game-winning goal was just the second goal of the season for Knott, a sophomore forward. He assisted on the Lumberjacks' (8-7-1) first goal.
Jude Wittrock scored for Roseau (6-10-2).
Christian Hill, the state leader with a .941 save percentage, made 26 saves for Bemidji.
MORA - Jacob Szucs scored twice in the second period, the second one with 4:45 left in the period, as Mora/Milaca defeated Wadena-Deer Creek 4-3 at the Mora Civic Center.
Szucs added a goal in the first to record his first career hat trick. Ty Stanchfield, second in the state in scoring among freshmen (39 points), added three assists for the Mustangs (5-11-0).
Szucs' first goal in the second period tied the score with 6:02 remaining. Dakota Dickson scored with 4:51 left in the second before Szucs recorded the game winner six seconds later.
Owen Weiher added a third-period goal for the Wolverines (3-14-0). Hudson Hathaway and Lex Tucker each had a goal and an assist for Wadena-Deer Creek.
PRINCETON - Mason Clark's goal 58 seconds into overtime gave Princeton its first win of the season as the Tigers rallied to defeat Cambridge-Isanti 5-4 at First Bank and Trust Ice Arena.
Clark also scored on the power play in the third period for Princeton (1-14-1), which trailed 4-1 early in the second period.
The Bluejackets (5-12-0) scored three goals in the final four minutes of the first period for a 3-1 lead. Blake Wotachek scored two of those goals.
