Hockey Night: Rogers rolls past Stillwater

Jan. 3: Royals remain on hot streak; Delano outlasts section rival Breck; Hermantown christens new rink in style

Rogers 5, Stillwater 2

STILLWATER - Rogers continued its recent run of impressive outings, racing to a 5-2 victory over Stillwater on Saturday at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center in a matchup of teams ranked in the top eight in the state in Class 2A.

No. 8-2A Rogers (9-4-1) scored three unanswered goals spanning all three periods as it stretched its unbeaten streak to six games. The Royals started the season 1-3-0 but have just one loss in their last 10 outings.

Brock Cheslock scored late in the first period to put Rogers ahead 2-1. Landon Medin's power-play goal was the lone score in the second period and it gave Rogers a 3-1 lead. Jake Burmis completed the uninterrupted scoring run with 5:47 left to make it 4-1.

Burmis, a sophomore defenseman, led Rogers with a goal and two assists.

Liam McGlynn and Tyson Miller scored for No. 7-2A Stillwater (10-3-0) which has lost two of its last four. 

Senior goaltender Tyler Bacon, a big part of Rogers' recent success, stopped 17 shots. He ranks 10th in the state with a 1.77 goals-against average.

Stillwater goaltender Gavin Bajda made 25 saves. 

Both teams reached the state Class 2A tournament last season, with Stillwater finishing as runner-up.

Delano 4, Breck 3

DELANO - Five goals were scored in the final period, including the winner by Brody Geislinger with 31 seconds remaining, as Delano secured a 4-3 victory over Section 2A rival Breck at the Delano Area Sports Arena.

Geislinger, wide open in the slot, one-timed a pass from behind the net from Andrew Bruett, beating Breck goaltender Mac West. 

Dylan Nelson and Daniel Halonen also scored in the third period for No. 3-1A Delano (9-3-1). Halonen, a senior, had two goals and leads the Tigers with 17, tied for seventh most in the state.

No. 12-1A Breck (8-4-0) took a 2-1 lead early in the third on the first of two goals in the period from Cooper Klinck.

Delano outshot Breck 30-17. West finished with 26 saves while the Tigers' Lincoln Truax had 14.

Hermantown 5, Eden Prairie 3

HERMANTOWN - Unbeaten Hermantown christened the new rink at Northstar Ford Arena in style, rallying to beat Eden Prairie 5-3 behind Mick Martalock's two goals in the third period.

Freshmen RJ Thompson and Riley Wolkove scored to put No. 15-2A Eden Prairie (5-6-1) ahead 2-0 7:22 into the first period. Beau Christy scored in the first and Alexander Nicklin in the second as the No. 1-1A Hawks (11-0-2) tied it at 2-2 heading into the third.

Martalock, a junior, scored his 13th and 14th goals of the season in the third to put Hermantown ahead 4-2 with 7:50 remaining.

Thompson scored again for Eden Prairie with 5:15 left to pull the Eagles to within 4-3. Ford Skytta's empty net goal with 22 seconds left clinched the win for Hermantown.

Edina 4, Cretin-Derham Hall 2

PRIOR LAKE - Edina completed its undefeated run through the three-day Tradition Holiday Invitational by scoring twice in the final minute to beat Cretin-Derham Hall 4-2 at the Dakotah! Ice Center.

Becker Wenkus scored a power-play goal with 37 seconds left to put No. 3-2A Edina (10-3-0) ahead 2-1. Brady Mullman added a goal 13 seconds later to clinch the win. 

No. 3 Edina beat the No. 12 (Holy Angels), No. 4 (St. Thomas Academy) and No. 11 (Cretin-Derham Hall) ranked teams in the state during the tournament.

Edina's Bode McConnell scored his state-leading 23rd goal in the first period for the Hornets who started the season 0-2-0. 

Max Thompson tied it at 2-2 for Cretin-Derham Hall (8-5-0) with 1:45 left in the third.

Moorhead 6, St. Thomas Academy 2

PRIOR LAKE - Zac Zimmerman and John Gramer each scored two goals as Moorhead defeated St. Thomas Academy 6-2 in the third round of the Tradition Holiday Invitational at the Dakotah! Ice Arena.

Luca Pedri scored a first-period power-play goal for No. 4-2A St. Thomas Academy (9-4-1).. No. 2-2A Moorhead responded with four second-period goals. Zimmerman had two of those with Max Cullen and Tyden Bergeson netting the other two that period for the Spuds (12-1-0).

Gramer's two goals sandwiched a power-play goal by the Cadets' Maverick McKinnon in the third.

Providence Academy 2, Orono 2 OT

LONG LAKE - Kaden Farner's goal early in the third period allowed Providence Academy to tie Orono as the teams skated to a 2-2 tie at the Orono Ice Arena.

Gavin Sattler scored in the first period for the Lions (6-6-2).

Ryan De Lange and Rory Kvern scored in the second period for Orono (3-6-3). Max Lewin made 45 saves for the No. 11-1A Spartans.

Owen Villagomez stopped 37 shots for Providence Academy.

Mounds View 6, Duluth East 6 OT

DULUTH - Russ Eck's goal with 54 seconds left in the third period forced a 6-6 overtime tie between Mounds View and Duluth East at Essentia Duluth Heritage Center.

Eck added four assists for Mounds View (0-11-1). Chase Ballinger and Tobias Walseth each had a pair of goals for the Mustangs.

Liam Brooks and Zane Medlin each recorded two goals and an assist for Duluth East (3-8-2).

Proctor 1, International Falls 1 OT

INTERNATIONAL FALLS - Proctor and International Falls each scored a first-period goal then skated to a 1-1 tie at Bronco Arena.

The Bronco's one goal is the fewest they've scored this season. Their previous low was four in a 4-4 overtime tie against Fort Frances (Ont.) on Dec. 19.

William Yerxa scored on a power play for the Broncos (8-0-2), one of four undefeated teams in the state. Xaiden Oliver scored for Proctor (7-6-1).

William Pocrnich made 27 saves for the Rails while Caleb Joslyn stopped 25 shots for International Falls.

Both teams were coming off championships in their respective Holiday Tournaments.

Hastings 1, Hopkins 0

HASTINGS - Carter Hanson's second-period goal held up as the game-winner as the Raiders recorded a 1-0 win over Hopkins at the Hastings Civic Arena.

Charlie Stoffel made 21 saves for the shutout for Hastings (7-6-0).

Oliver Nordeen stopped 23 shots for Hopkins (3-8-1).
