PRIOR LAKE - Senior forward Alex White grabbed a loose puck along the boards, cruised to the slot between the top of the face-off circles and blistered a shot off the catching glove of goaltender Owen Ryan to lead Edina to a 3-2 overtime victory over St. Thomas Academy in the second round of the Tradition Holiday Invitational at the Dakotah! Ice Center.
Ryan, a freshman who ranks fourth in the sate with a 1.28 goals-against average and third with a .952 save percentage, got a piece of the puck before it glanced off his glove and into the net. The goal came 1:16 into the extra session.
No. 3-2A Edina (9-3-0) held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, with Brooks Suter scoring in the first and Brady Mullman early in the third.
Lane Powers tied it at 1-1 early in the third for No. 4-1A St. Thomas Academy (9-3-1). Reed Smith's goal for the Cadets with 6:34 left in the third pulled St. Thomas Academy into a 2-2 tie.
Edina goaltender Chase Bjorgaard stopped 24 shots. Ryan also finished with 24 saves.
Both teams reached the semifinals of the state Class 2A tournament last season. Edina beat St. Thomas Academy 4-3 in the third-place game.
HIBBING - Hibbing/Chisholm's high-scoring top line needed 51 seconds of overtime to combine for a goal that lifted the Bluejackets to a 4-3 win over Wayzata at the Hibbing Memorial Building.
Cole Swanson, a sophomore, scored the winning goal with assists from Isaiah Hildenbrand and Tate Swanson, both seniors. Tate Swanson is tied for eighth and Cole Swanson tied for 10th in the state in the scoring with 35 and 34 points, respectively.
No. 13-2A Wayzata (4-5-2) forced the overtime period on a goal by Kruz Sauer early in the third period. Tommy Colmenero added a goal and an assist for the Trojans.
Cole Swanson, Hildenbrand and Tate Swanson each scored a goal in regulation for No. 2-1A Hibbing/Chisholm (11-1-1).
PRIOR LAKE - Defending state Class 2A champion Moorhead looked the part as it erupted for three unanswered goals in the third period on its way to a 6-3 triumph over Shakopee in the second round of The Tradition Holiday Invitational at the Dakotah! Ice Center.
Tyden Bergeson, Max Cullen and Zac Zimmerman scored to break open a 3-3 tie. It was the second two-goal game in as many nights for Cullen, a junior committed to Minnesota-Duluth.
Bergeson, a senior committed to Augustana, also scored twice and added an added three assists. He has at least one point in all 12 games this season for the No. 2-1A Spuds (11-1-0).
Cole Davis' shorthanded goal 2:45 into the third period pulled No. 5-2A Shakopee (9-3-0) into a 3-3 tie.
Shakopee also reached the state tournament last season, winning the consolation championship.
ELK RIVER - Bemidji goaltender Christian Hill turned in another stellar performance as he made 35 saves in the Lumberjacks' 1-0 victory over Elk River/Zimmerman at the Furniture and Things Community Event Center.
The shutout was the state-leading fifth of the season for Hill, a senior who was coming off a 0-0 tie against Brainderd on Dec. 23. Friday's performance vaulted him to the top of the state statistics charts for goalies in both goals-against average (0.98, tied with Minnetonka's Chase Jerdee) and save percentage (.962).
Griffin Dewar scored the lone goal, putting Bemidji (6-3-1) in front to stay with 6:06 left in the first period. The Lumberjacks have lost just once in their last seven outings.
The loss was the fourth in five games for the Elks (4-4-0).
ISANTI - Carter Lemke's goal 1:19 into overtime allowed Monticello to rally past Mississippi 8 Conference rival Cambridge-Isanti 3-2 at the Isanti Ice Arena.
No. 9-1A Monticello (8-2-2) fired 61 shots at Cambridge-Isanti goaltender Ty True, who stopped 58 of them. Monticello goaltender Nolan Wurm made 24 stops.
Bennett Bergloff and Blake Wotachek scored in the second period as Cambridge-Isanti (5-10-0) took a 2-1 lead into the third.
Monticello's Levi Welle scored the lone goal of the third period.
LINDSTROM - Parker Fulton's third goal of the game, and second of the third period, completed Northern Lakes' three-goal rally as the Lightning defeated Chisago Lakes 6-5 in a matchup of ranked teams at the Chisago Lakes Ice Arena.
The teams were tied 3-3 after two periods. Colton Horak scored twice midway in the second to give No. 19-1A Chisago Lakes (6-4-2) a 5-3 lead.
Fulton scored with 4:22 to play to bring the No. 14-1A Lightning (6-4-1) within one, 5-4. Griffin Hannah scored 21 seconds later to tie the game, setting up Fulton's game-winner with 2:51 remaining.
Austin Slettom added two goals for Chisago Lakes.
NEW HOPE - Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper scored three goals in the third period as the Wings defeated Bloomington Jefferson 4-2 at the New Hope Ice Arena. The loss was the first of the season for the Jaguars.
Niklas Anderson scored twice for Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper (3-9-0).
Blake Dosan and Anders Björklund scored for the Jaguars (11-1-1).
LONG PRAIRIE - Remi Chisholm's goal with 9:54 left in the second period held up as the game-winner as Little Falls defeated Prairie Centre 2-1 at the Todd County Expo Arena. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the North Stars.
Little Falls (3-6-0) led 1-0 on Brandon Laubach's goal 1:57 into the second. Chisholm's goal made it 2-0.
Prairie Centre (9-2-0) scored with 8:50 remaining in the second on Letyon Fuchs' power-play goal.
EAST GRAND FORKS - Max Bies scored twice and East Grand Forks recorded a 5-1 win over Detroit Lakes in a matchup of ranked teams at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.
Nolan Meulebroeck added three assists for the No. 13-1A Green Wave (4-7-1).
Carter Whitworth scored in the third period for No. 20-1A Detroit Lakes (5-7-0), which beat East Grand Forks 3-2 in overtime on Dec. 20.
