Hockey Night: Moorhead tops Cretin-Derham Hall in holiday tourney

Moorhead 4, Prior Lake 3

PRIOR LAKE - Max Cullen scored twice and Brandon Mickelson's goal early in the third period held up as the game-winner as Moorhead beat Cretin-Derham Hall 4-3 at the Dakotah! Ice Center in the first round of the Tradition Holiday Invitational.

Only four games were played statewide on New Year's Day, and all four were opening-round round games in the three-day, round robin tournament at Prior Lake. 

Cullen scored the only goals of the second period to put No. 2-2A Moorhead (10-1-0) ahead 2-1. John Gramer made it 3-1 with his goal 1:34 into the third.

Will Thonvold scored for No. 11-2A Cretin-Derham Hall (7-4-0) 2:14 into the third period to pull the Raiders to within 3-2. Mickelson scored his goal 46 seconds later as the Spuds' regained their two-goal advantage.

Cullen's two goals give him seven on the season. Mickelson and Joey Cullen lead the team with 10, and five players have at least seven. Tyden Bergeson is the team's top scorer with 26 points.

Edina 6, Holy Angels 3

PRIOR LAKE - Another night, another hat trick-plus for Bode McConnell. The Edina junior had his sixth multi-goal game of the season - and fourth with three-or-more goals - as he led the Hornets to a 6-3 win over Holy Angels.

McConnell opened the scoring 29 seconds into the opening period and scored again early in the second period to put Edina ahead 3-1. He added two more goals in a span of 28 seconds late in the second as No. 3-2A Edina (8-3-0) took a 6-2 lead into the third. McConnell's four goals give him a state-best 22 this season. He scored 16 goals in 31 games last season.

Junior defenseman Teddy Lechner scored all three goals for No. 12-2A Holy Angels (7-3-0). All three goals came on power plays.

Shakopee 6, Prior Lake 2

PRIOR LAKE - Senior forward Tristin Wassengeso scored twice an added an assist as Shakopee rolled to a 6-2 victory over South Suburban Conference foe Prior Lake in a matchup that will help determine the postseason seeding order in Section 2AA.

No. 5-2A Shakopee (8-2-0) scored twice in the final 31 seconds of the second period, including a goal with 10 seconds left from Wassengeso, to take a 3-1 lead into the third.

Shakopee closed out the third period with consecutive goals from Wassengeso, Kolton Krisak and Cooper Siegert. Siegert's goal was his team-leading 11th of the season.

Noah Kurth and Brayden Lake scored for No. 19-2A Prior Lake (3-3-2).

St. Thomas Academy 10, Lakeville North 0

PRIOR LAKE - Nine players scored at least one goal and Jacksyn Crary made 15 saves for the shutout as St. Thomas Academy cruised past Lakeville North 10-0.

Junior Bennett Knutson scored twice and added an assist to lead the No. 4-2A Cadets (9-2-1), who scored at least three goals in every period. 

Lane Powers, Reed Smith and Will Mikan each had a goal and two assists for St. Thomas Academy.

David Isaacson and Evan Loftus shared the goaltending duties for Lakeville North (2-7-1), combining to make 33 saves.
