Hockey Night: International Falls wins shootout with Bagley/Fosston

Dec. 31: Yerxa brothers combine for 10 points for unbeaten Broncos; Monticello outlasts Cloquet; Mankato West, Proctor win tourney titles

International Falls 6, Bagley/Fosston 3

INTERNATIONAL FALLS - William and Anthony Yerxa combined for 10 points as International Falls defeated Bagley/Fosston 6-3 on Wednesday for the championship of the Winternational Falls Holiday Classic at Bronco Arena.

The game, one of 26 played around the state on New Year's Eve day, featured the state's top five scorers - two for International Falls and three for Bagley/Fosston.

Anthony Yerxa, who had a goal and four assists, leads the state with 46 points. William Yerxa, who had a had trick and two assists, is second with 44 points. The brothers are tied with Thief River Falls' Spencer Anderson for the state lead with 21 goals.

James Palmer, third in the state with 41 points, had a goal and an assist for the Flyers (9-3-0). Wyatt Gerbracht scored two goals and added an assist. Gerbracht and Logan Dillich are tied for fourth with 38 points. Dillich had an assist.

International Falls improved to 8-0-1, one of five unbeaten teams in the state.

Monticello 1, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 0

ST. CLOUD - Ashton Stoll scored with 4:27 remaining to give Monticello a 1-0 win over Cloquet/Esko/Carlton in a matchup of the ninth- and 10th-ranked teams in Class 1A in the third round of the Granite City Showcase held at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

Stoll, a senior forward, has a team-high 10 goals for the No. 9 Moose (7-2-2).

Jacob Iallondardo made 22 saves for No. 10 Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (7-7-0) while Nolan Wurm stopped 24 shots for his second shutout this season. Wurm, a junior, ranks 10th in the state with a 1.83 goals-against average.

Mankato West 3, Duluth Denfeld 2

DULUTH - Brooks Baukol scored 35 seconds into overtime to lift Mankato West past Duluth Denfeld 3-2 in the Heritage Holiday Classic championship game at the Heritage Sports Center.

Cory Backstrom scored on a power play to give Duluth Denfeld (4-7-1) a 1-0 with 2:20 left in the first.

Mankato West (6-4-2) used two shorthanded goals 20 seconds apart to take the lead in the second. The first, by Keaton Dorzek, came with 2:22 to play in the second. Brayden Keech then gave the Scarlets the lead with 2:02 remaining.

Liam Doyle answered with a power-play goal 3 minutes into the third for the Hunters.

Blake Brekke made 24 saves for the win. Matthew Smith stopped 31 shots for Duluth Denfeld.

Proctor 3, Rochester Lourdes 2

PROCTOR - Senior Breckin Ross' shorthanded goal early in the third period held up as the winner as host Proctor beat Rochester Lourdes 3-2 for its third victory in as many days and the championship of the Bill McGann Holiday Classic at St. Luke's Sports and Event Center.

Senior William Pocrnich was outstanding in goal for the Rails (7-6-0) stopping 37 of 39 shots. Rafe Giswold and Drew Yost also scored for Proctor. Yost's goal came with 2:01 left in the second period and tied the score at 2-2.

Nolan Dubois and Sam Kleinschmidt scored for No. 17-1A Rochester Lourdes (8-3-1).

Ross was the tournament's top goal scorer with four, and teammate Jax Hardy amassed a tournament high 11 points (2 goals, 11 assists).

St. Cloud 4, St. Cloud Cathedral 3

ST. CLOUD - The annual St. Cloud Showdown between St. Cloud and St. Cloud Cathedral, always played as the finale of the three-day Granite City Showcase, featured huge momentum swings including one final surge by St. Cloud in its 4-3 triumph at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

Lincoln O'Donnell scored late in the second and Aiden Yurczyk and Jackson Stuber added goals early in the third as the Crush (6-7-0) erased a 3-1 deficit. Yurczyk's goal was his second of the game and sixth of the season.

No. 15-1A St. Cloud Cathedral (6-7-0) scored three unanswered goals, including two from Bo Schmidt, spanning parts of the first and second periods.

Minnetonka 5, Blaine 0

BLAINE - Gabe Lindholm scored twice and Chase Jerdee made 16 saves as No. 1-2A Minnetonka shut out Blaine 5-0 at Fogerty Arena.

Ethan Sturgis, Danny Browning and Cooper Rannow each added two assists for the Skippers (11-0-1), one of the state's five remaining unbeaten teams. Caden Lindsay recorded a goal and an assist.

Jerdee improved to 9-0-0 after recording his fourth shutout of the season. The senior ranks first in the state with a 0.98 goals-against average and third with a .953 save percentage.

Wesley Andrle had 36 saves for Blaine (7-3-1).

Owatonna 3, Superior (Wis.) 2 OT

DULUTH - Grady Roush's goal 2:45 into overtime completed a three-goal comeback for Owatonna in its 3-2 win over Superior (Wis.) in the third-place game of the Heritage Holiday Classic at the Heritage Sports Center.

After Brady Haroldson scored twice in the first period for Superior, the Huskies (6-5-0) started their comeback with Josiah Thompson's goal 5:31 into the second. Gavin Fitch tied the game with 5:48 left in the second.

Braxton Ringhoffer made 23 saves for the win.

Mankato East 7, Sauk Rapids-Rice 4

ST. CLOUD - Micah Beckendorf and Luke Lebens each had two goals as Mankato East defeated Sauk Rapids-Rice 7-4 in the third round of the Granite City Showcase held at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

Lebens and Beckendorf each scored in the first as Mankato East (5-6-0) led 2-1 after the first. Lebens and Zacharia Lang scored in the second to give the Cougars a 4-1 lead.

Sauk Rapids-Rice (4-7-1) was the first to score in the third on Bryden Prevlitz's goal 52 seconds into the third. Mankato East scored twice before the Storm answered with two goals before Beckendorf's empty-net goal iced the win.

Albert Lea 4, Fargo Shanley (N.D.) 2

FERGUS FALLS - Jacob Kolker and Zaden Brua each scored twice as Albert Lake recorded a 4-2 win over Fargo Shanley (N.D.) in the third round of the Fergus Falls Holiday Classic held at the Fergus Falls Community Arena.

Kolker and Brua each scored in the second to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead after two periods.

Brua opened the third period with a power-play goal that was the game winner. Fargo Shanley responded with two goals before Kolker added an empty-net goal in the final seconds.

Brua, Drake Sternhagen and Casey Ulve each had two assists for Albert Lea (8-4-0).
