Hockey Night: Farmington wins South St. Paul tourney

Dec. 30: Depth, balance boost unbeaten Tigers past Hastings; Forest Lake beats another highly regarded section foe; Rochester Lourdes, Proctor to meet in tourney title game

Farmington 5, Hastings 2

SOUTH ST. PAUL - Farmington broke open a tie game in the third period with three unanswered goals - including two in 30 seconds - as it stayed unbeaten with a 5-2 win over Hastings on Tuesday at Doug Woog Arena in the championship game of the South St. Paul Premier.

Mason Rodgers scored 3:58 into the third to put Farmington (11-0-1) ahead 2-1. Jacob Whirley and Justin Harrison scored midway through the third to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.

Farmington has already surpassed its win total from last season, when it went 9-16-1. The Tigers haven't amassed more than 11 wins since the 2015-16 season, when they went 15-8-1 and reached the state Class 2A tournament. 

Five players scored for Farmington and no player had more than two points. That's true to form for at team with five players sharing the team goal-scoring lead with seven apiece.

Jonas Schauer pulled Hastings into a 1-1 tie with the lone goal of the second period. Charlie Stoffel made 43 saves for the Raiders (6-6-0). Chris Bade made 13 stops for Farmington.

Forest Lake 6, Rock Ridge 5 OT

FOREST LAKE - The best team in Section 7AA just might be Forest Lake, which beat section foe Rock Ridge 6-5 at the Forest Lake Sports Center on senior Ryder Siedow's overtime goal.

The victory comes on the heels of Forest Lake's 3-2 overtime triumph against Grand Rapids, another top section title contender from the north, on Dec. 27.

Siedow's goal, his second of the game and team-leading 16th of the season came 5:31 into the extra session. His season goal total is tied for ninth most in the state.

Rock Ridge senior Caz Carlson forced the overtime session with his power-play goal with 1:15 remaining in regulation. The teams alternated scoring the six third-period goals, and four of them came in the final 5:01.

Forest Lake improved to 9-3-0 with the victory. Rock Ridge, which had a 44-22 advantage in shots, dropped to 6-7-0.

Rochester Lourdes 4, Somerset (Wis.) 3 OT

PROCTOR - Senior forward Jack Phillips scored with 5 seconds left in overtime to boost Rochester Lourdes past Somerset, Wis., 4-3 and into Wednesday's championship game of the Bill McGann Holiday Classic at the St. Luke's Sports and Event Center.

Phillips' goal was his second of the game and team-leading 13th of the season. No other Lourdes player has more than five. 

No. 17-1A Rochester Lourdes (8-2-1) led 3-1 early in the second on a goal by Dom Haugen. Somerset (4-6-0) rallied to tie at 3-3 on goals by Wyatt Olson early in the second and Marshall Haukom late in the third.

The Eagles play host Proctor in the tournament's title game.

Warroad 4, Grand Forks Central (N.D.) 0

WARROAD - Finn Hanson made 28 saves for the shutout and Conner Lund scored twice in the second period as Warroad topped Grand Forks Central, North Dakota's top-ranked team, 4-0 in the second round of the Hockeytown Holiday Classic at The Gardens Arena.

Ryan Shaugabay added a goal and two assists for No 4-1A Warroad (9-3-0), which lost 4-2 to Grand Forks Red River on Monday in the opening round of the tournament.

Mahtomedi 7, Orono 4

LONG LAKE - Sophomore Vinny Redpath scored three goals in the opening 5:25 as Mahtomedi raced to a big early lead and cruised to a 7-4 win over Orono at the Orono Ice Arena.

Easton DeZelar added a first-period goal for the No. 6-1A Zephyrs (5-5-2), who led 5-0 before Max Sutcliffe scored with 1 second left in the opening period.

Sutcliffe, a freshman, added two power-play goals in the third period for No. 11-1A Orono (3-6-2).

Andover 3, Maple Grove 3 OT

MAPLE GROVE - Wyatt Kuznik's goal with 1:41 left in regulation for Maple Grove, forcing overtime in the Crimson's 3-3 tie with Andover in the second round of the Holiday Classic in the Grove at the Maple Grove Community Center.

Brody Peterson scored twice in the third period for Andover (3-7-3) as it took a short-lived 3-2 lead late in the third.

Henry Miller and Jaden Roueche also scored for No. 9-2A Maple Grove (7-3-1).

St. Paul 2, Red Wing 1

RED WING - JoJo Cunningham's goal early in the second period held up as the game winner as St. Paul beat host Red Wing 2-1 at Prairie Island Arena in the championship of the River Bend Holiday Classic.

Max Karvonen also scored for St. Paul (2-8-1). Brody Peterson scored with 2:16 remaining for Red Wing (5-5-0).
