Hockey Night: Freshman boosts St. Thomas Academy past Cretin-Derham Hall

Dec. 27: Cadets' Maverick McKinnon completes hat trick, finishes off rival Raiders; Delano, Hibbing tie in Class 1A showdown

St. Thomas Academy 5, Cretin-Derham Hall 3

MAPLEWOOD - Freshman Maverick McKinnon scored with 2:19 left in regulation to complete his hat trick and help lift St. Thomas Academy past arch rival and Section 3AA foe Cretin-Derham Hall 5-3 on Saturday at Aldrich Arena.

McKinnon fired a low shot from the right face-off dot, ringing it in off the left goalpost, to put No. 4-2A St. Thomas Academy (8-2-1) ahead 4-3. The goal was McKinnon's 12th of the season, second most among the Cadets. He scored in the first period to tie the score at 1-1 and midway through the third period to put St. Thomas Academy ahead 3-2.

Brody Ruprecht and Marcus Matyas each had a goal and assist to lead No. 13-2A Cretin-Derham Hall (7-3-0), which had its six-game unbeaten streak snapped.

St. Thomas Academy's Cole Braunshausen scored an empty-net goal with 54 seconds remaining. The goal was the senior forward's 15th of the season, tied for seventh most in the state.

Delano 3, Hibbing/Chisholm 3 OT

HIBBING - Hibbing/Chisholm's Cole Swanson scored twice in the third period but Delano's Daniel Halonen's second goal of the night forced overtime as the teams skated to a 3-3 tie at the Hibbing Memorial Building. 

Halonen, who also had an assist, scored his second goal with 1:05 left in regulation. Brody Geislinger added a goal and an assist for No. 3-2A Delano (8-3-1).

Swanson, a sophomore forward, is second on No. 2-1A Hibbing/Chisholm (10-1-1) with 13 goals and 31 points. His point total is tied for ninth-best in the state, one behind his senior brother Tate.

Lincoln Truax made 23 saves for Delano while Gavin Lamphere had 25 stops for the Bluejackets.

Hermantown 3, White Bear Lake 2

HERMANTOWN - Sophomore Paxson Madill scored the game-winner early in the third period and senior Bryce Francisco stopped 25 shots for his 10th win of the season as Hermantown stayed unbeaten with a 3-2 victory over White Bear Lake in what is expected to be the Hawks' final game at Hermantown Ice Arena's "old" rink.

Ford Skytta and Madill, who has three goals in his last two games, scored less than 2 minutes apart early in the third period to put the No. 1-1A Hawks (10-0-2) ahead 3-1.

Rian Marquardt scored in the first period for No. 17-2A White Bear Lake (3-5-1). Magnus Benz's goal with 4:29 left pulled the Bears to within 3-2. 

Riley Helmberger stopped 25 shots for White Bear Lake.

Hermantown's next home game is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 3 against Eden Prairie and is expected to be played in the Hawks' home arena's newly constructed rink.

Edina 6, Hill-Murray 3

EDINA - Bode McConnell continued his blistering scoring pace with a first-period hat trick as Edina raced to a big early lead en route to a 6-3 win over Hill-Murray at Braemar Arena and a split of the teams' home-and-home weekend series.

McConnell, a junior forward, scored his three goals in a span of 3:46 early in the first period, which ended with No. 3-2A Edina (7-3-0) leading 4-1.

No. 5-2A Hill-Murray (6-3-2) got as close as 5-3 on Brady Morrell's power-play goal with 7:35 remaining. Becker Wenkus' empty-net goal with 1:44 clinched the win for Edina.

Hill-Murray won Friday night's series opener 4-1 at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood.

McConnell's three goals give him 18 this season, third most in the state. He scored 16 goals in 31 games last season.

Rosemount 2, Rogers 2 OT

EDEN PRAIRIE - Channing Goodwin had a goal and an assist while Drew Sherman made 37 saves as Rosemount rallied to tie Rogers 2-2 in overtime as the ranked teams met in the second round of the Dick's Sporting Goods Eden Prairie Holiday Classic at the Eden Prairie Community Center.

Goodwin's goal came with 4:40 left in regulation for No. 11-2A Rosemount (10-3-2). Bauer Sullivan added a goal in the first for the Irish.

Cole Bumgarner and Brody Netzinger scored for No. 9-2A Rogers (8-4-1).

Bloomington Jefferson 4, Buffalo 3

BLOOMINGTON - Four players netted goals for Bloomington Jefferson as the Jaguars stayed unbeaten with a 4-3 win over Buffalo at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

Mason Van Brunt's goal 4:49 into the third held up as the game winner for the Jaguars (11-0-1). Van Brunt has a team-high 13 goals for Bloomington Jefferson, one of seven unbeaten teams in the state.

Brandon Rodenwald scored twice for Buffalo (5-5-0).

Forest Lake 3, Grand Rapids 2 OT

FOREST LAKE - Ryder Siedow's third goal of the game came with 1 second left in overtime to lift Forest Lake to a 3-2 win over Section 7AA foe Grand Rapids at the Forest Lake Sports Center.

Siedow, a senior forward, scored in the first and second periods before netting the game winner in OT for the Rangers (8-3-0). He leads Forest Lake with 14 goals and 12 assists.

Ari Lamp and Seth Carlson scored in the second period for Grand Rapids (3-8-1).

Farmington 3, Eagan 2 OT

SOUTH ST. PAUL - Farmington scored the final three goals, including Joe Hambrecht's game winner with 2 seconds left in overtime, as the Tigers rallied to stay unbeaten with a 3-2 win over Eagan in a South St. Paul Premier quarterfinal at Doug Wood Arena.

Caden Sullivan and Jack Budde scored in the third for Farmington (9-0-1).

Nathan Turvold and Blake Pavek scored in the first for Eagan (4-6-1).

Tartan 2, Crookston 1 OT

THIEF RIVER FALLS - Devon Shier's goal 1:54 into overtime gave Tartan a 2-1 win over Crookston in the second round of the Ralph Engelstad Hockey Classic at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Benny McClellan scored with 10:21 remaining in regulation for Tartan (6-6-0) and set up overtime. Nathan McGuire made 38 saves for the Titans.

Tate Hamre scored in the first for Crookston (7-2-1), which was unbeaten in its first seven games.
