EDEN PRAIRIE - Hockey became pinball in the second period as Rosemount and Eden Prairie combined for seven goals - including three in 41 seconds - in Rosemount's eventual 7-5 triumph over the Eagles in the opening round of the Dick's Sporting Goods Eden Prairie Holiday Classic at the Eden Prairie Community Center.
No. 11-2A Rosemount (10-3-0) scored four goals in the second period, including back-to-back scores spanning 13 seconds by junior forward Connor Schubert.
Freshman R.J. Thompson scored two of his three goals in the second period, including the one that pulled No. 14-2A Eden Prairie (5-4-1) into a 5-5 tie with 7:14 left. Thompson's three goals give him a team-best 12 on the season.
Cade Sherman's goal, his second of the game, with 23 seconds left in the second put the Irish ahead 6-5 and proved to be the game winner. The Augustana commit has 16 points this season, tied for second most on the Irish.
HERMANTOWN - Another game, another top-ranked opponent for Hermantown. And another victory.
The unbeaten Hawks, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, survived another round in their gauntlet of a schedule, beating No. 3-1A Delano 7-3 at Hermantown Ice Arena behind two goals each from cousins Paxson Madill and Bode Madill.
Paxson Madill, a sophomore, scored both his goals in the first period as the Hawks (9-0-2) took a 3-1 lead.
Bode Madill, a senior, scored both his goals in the second period as Hermantown, one of seven unbeaten teams in the state, built a 5-1 lead.
Daniel Halonen scored twice for Delano (8-3-0). He leads the Tigers with 13 goals.
MAPLEWOOD - Sophomore Chase Crowley scored the first two goals as Hill-Murray took an early lead it never relinquished en route to beating Edina 4-2 in a showdown of top-5 ranked Class 2A teams at Aldrich Arena.
Crowley scored the lone goal of the first period and put the No. 5-2A Pioneers (5-2-2) ahead 2-0 52 second into the second period.
Junior Bode McConnell's team-leading 15th goal of the season pulled No. 3-2A Edina (6-2-0) to within 2-1 early in the second period.
Gavin Sondreal's power-play goal put Hill-Murray ahead 3-1 with 45 seconds left in the second. Tommy Miller added an empty-net goal with 1:15 left in regulation.
Grayson Hanggi made 31 saves for Hill-Murray. Chase Bjorgaard, also a football standout, made 20 saves for the Hornets.
DETROIT LAKES - Sophomore Miles Kennelly started and finished a four-goal second-period run for Northfield as it topped Detroit Lakes 4-2 at Freeman Sports Arena in a matchup of top-20 ranked Class 1A teams.
Kennelly scored 4:14 into the first period to tie the score at 1-1. His second goal came with 1:18 left in the second period and put No. 8-1A Northfield (7-1-0) ahead 4-1. Kennelly leads the Raiders with 10 points.
Easton Kennedy and Henry Olson scored for No. 20-1A Detroit Lakes (5-5-0).
EDEN PRAIRIE - Rogers scored the first three goals then held on to beat Lakeville South 3-2 in the opening round of the Dick's Sporting Goods Eden Prairie Holiday Classic at the Eden Prairie Community Center.
Cam Lubke and Jayden Kurtz scored first-period goals for No. 9-2A Rogers (8-4-0), and Brock Cheslock put the Royals ahead 3-0 6:19 into the third. Cole Bumgarner assisted on all three Royals goals.
Gavin Lafferty and Roan Zielie scored in the final 6:18 of the third for Lakeville South (3-5-1).
THIEF RIVER FALLS - Spencer Anderson's three goals propelled Thief River Falls to a 6-4 victory over Tartan at Ralph Engelstad Arena in the opening round of the Ralph Engelstad Hockey Classic.
Anderson, a junior committed to Miami (Ohio), scored twice in the first as Thief River Falls (4-6-0) took a 2-1 lead. His goal early in the third period put the Titans (5-5-0) ahead 4-3.
Anderson's scoring outburst gives him 18 goals this season, two behind state goal-scoring leader Anthony Yerxa of International Falls.
Benny McClellan had a goal and an assist to lead Tartan.
THIEF RIVER FALLS - Senior goaltender Teegyn Johnson stopped all 36 shots he faced to lead Crookston past Grafton/Park River (N.D.) 4-0 at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Jay Reese had a goal and two assists and Garrett Fischer a goal and an assist for the Pirates (7-1-1).
Grafton/Park River dropped to 2-4-0 with the loss.
