MAPLEWOOD - Donovan Klin's shorthanded goal midway through the third period propelled unranked Holy Family past No. 5-ranked (Class 2A) Hill-Murray 3-2 on Tuesday at Aldrich Arena in one of 25 games played on the eve of Christmas Eve.
Klin, who played at the Pee Wee level for Minnetonka last season, outraced two Pioneers defenseman to a loose puck at center ice and then beat standout Hill-Murray goaltender Grayson Hanggi with a quick deke. The goal, Klin's seventh of the season, came with 8:12 left in the third.
The teams traded goals throughout, with Holy Family's Niklas Segfeldt scoring the lone goal of the first period to get things started. Brady Morrell's power-play goal pulled Hill-Murray (5-2-2) into a 2-2 tie with 11:25 remaining.
Holy Family (4-6-0) had five freshmen, including Klin, and three sophomores in its varsity lineup. Freshman defenseman Liam Onnen also scored for the Fire, who were outshot 57-23.
Danny Linn made 55 saves for Holy Family. Hanggi finished with 20 stops.
STILLWATER - Stillwater scored three unanswered goals spanning parts of the second and third periods as it hung on to beat Benilde-St. Margaret's 4-3 at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.
Sophomore Michael Belde scored late in the second to pull the No. 7-2A Ponies (9-2-0) into a 2-2 tie. Sophomore Jonah Johnston and junior Joe Howe scored just less than 3 minutes apart early in the third as Stillwater built a 4-2 cushion.
Senior Grayson Quirk pulled the No. 19-2A Red Knights (2-4-1) to within 4-3 with his power-play goal with 3:46 remaining.
Stillwater, runner-up in Class 2A last season, outshot Benilde-St. Margaret's 40-25.
CLOQUET - Junior defenseman Gabe Swenson scored what proved to be the winning goal with 5:22 remaining as Hermantown slipped past Section 7A rival Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 4-2 at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center.
Kole Lendzyk added an empty-net goal just before final horn sounded for the No.1-1A Hawks (8-0-2), one of seven remaining unbeaten teams in the state.
Micklain Martalock scored in the first and Paxson Madill added a goal midway through the second as Hermantown took a 2-0 lead. No. 12-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (5-6-0) rallied to tie it at 2-2 on goals from Luca Gentilini late in the second and Jordy Sewell early in the third.
ST. PAUL - Jonny Bloedow scored twice and Maverick Timmons' goal late in the third proved to be the winner as Cretin-Derham Hall knocked off Holy Angels 5-4 in a private school showdown at Highland Arena.
Soren Saumweber's power-play goal with 6:06 left in the second period put the No. 13-2A Raiders (7-2-0) ahead 4-1.
Holy Angels (7-2-0) rallied behind a pair of Cole Cheeseman goals (one late in the second, one early in the third) to close to within 4-3. Timmons scored with 1:09 left to give Cretin-Derham Hall a two-goal cushion.
Cheeseman completed his hat trick with a perfectly executed "Michigan" goal with 35 seconds left.
PLYMOUTH - Nate Neyer's goal with 2:07 left in regulation allowed Lakeville South to forge an eventual 4-4 overtime tie with Wayzata at the Plymouth Ice Center.
Unranked Lakeville South (3-4-1) held leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 during the first two periods. Carter Ernst's shorthanded goal with 6:04 left in the second put the Cougars ahead 3-2.
No. 12-2A Wayzata (4-4-2) surged to a 4-3 lead in the third on goals from Eli Molde and Tommy Colmenero. The Trojans outshot the Cougars 5-0 in the overtime session.
LAKEVILLE - Colby Taylor's second goal of the game came 10 seconds into overtime to give Eastview a 4-3 win over Lakeville North at Ames Arena. Taylor's two goals were the senior forward's first two of the season.
The teams were tied 2-2 after the first following goals by Hayden Buck and Kaden Decker for Lakeville North (2-5-2) and Sam Wooten and Liam O'Donnell for the Lightning (4-8-0).
Taylor gave Eastview the 3-2 lead 54 seconds into the third but Blake Bachmeier scored on the power play for the Panthers with 10:15 left in regulation.
Charlie Scanlon made 38 saves for the win.
ANDOVER - Jack Rykkeli's rebound goal with 23 seconds left in overtime gave Andover a 4-3 win over Duluth East at the Andover Community Center. Rykkeli, a sophomore forward, now has six goals this season.
The teams traded goals in the first. Duluth East (3-5-2) got goals from Jax Edgerton and Henrik Spennningsby while Brody Peterson and Rykkeli scored for Andover (3-6-2).
The Huskies took a 3-2 lead on Camden Langfeld's goal but Zane Medlin scored on the power play for the Greyhounds with 51 seconds left in the second.
BLAINE - Two Rivers scored the game's last three goals as it handed Irondale a 5-3 loss, the Knights' first of the season, at the National Sports Center's Super Rink.
Irondale (5-1-1) led 3-2 after Logan Forrest scored his second goal of the night with 6:29 remaining in the second.
Two Rivers (4-6-1) got a power-play goal from Luke Leitner to tie the contest before Carlo Reynolds scored with 1:05 left in the second to give Warriors the 4-3 lead.
Eddie Drury, who also had two assists, completed the scoring in the third.
LONG LAKE - Ryan Mullen scored twice and Oliver Thielen stopped 29 shots as Minneapolis upset No. 9-1A Orono 3-0 at the Orono Ice Arena.
Mullen gave Minneapolis (6-4-0) the lead with 2:43 left in the second. He then scored with six minutes remaining in regulation. Wilson Lamberty completed the scoring with 2:11 to play. Owen DeYoung had two assists.
The shutout was Thielen's second this season.
Augustus Foster made 30 saves for Orono (3-5-2).
