Hockey Night: Minnetonka tops Moorhead in No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown

Dec. 20: Skippers remain unbeaten, hand Spuds first loss; Hill-Murray hangs on to beat White Bear Lake; Late goal lifts Shakopee past Stillwater

Minnetonka 4, Moorhead 2

MOORHEAD - Sophomore Cash Hardie scored twice, including the game-clincher into an empty net with 21 seconds left, as Minnetonka outlasted Moorhead 4-2 on Saturday at the Moorhead Sports Center in a showdown of the No.1- and No. 2-ranked teams -- both unbeaten -- in Class 2A in the state.

Hardie jammed home a loose puck in the crease area for the final goal, scoring after forward Moorhead forward Brandon Mickelson made a spectacular diving save on the Skippers' initial rush.

Mickelson and Hardie traded first-period goal. Senior Cooper Rannow scored back-to-back goals 2:37 apart in the third period to give No. 2-2A Minnetonka (9-0-1) a 3-1 cushion.

Max Cullen scored a power-play goal with 1:56 left to pull No. 1-2A Moorhead (8-1-0) to within 3-2. 

Hardie leads Minnetonka with eight goals and 13 points. No other Skippers player has more than five goals. Minnetonka senior goaltender Chase Jerdee made 14 saves as he improved to 8-0-0.

Minnetonka and Bloomington Jefferson are the first two teams to reach nine wins this season.

Hill-Murray 3, White Bear Lake 2

MAPLEWOOD - Hill-Murray built a big early lead then hung on to beat hard-charging White Bear Lake 3-2 at Aldrich Arena in the teams' annual regular-season showdown.

Goals by Gavin Sondreal and Tommy Miller put No. 5-2A Hill-Murray (5-1-2) ahead 2-0 after the first period and Landon Sampair made it 3-0 midway through the second.

Junior defenseman Rian Marquardt started the comeback for No. 15-2A White Bear Lake (3-4-1) the first of his two goals coming late in the second period. He scored again 57 seconds into the third to cut the Pioneers' lead to 3-2.

Riley Helmberger turned in a standout performance in goal for the Bears, stopping 31 shots. Grayson Hanggi made 21 saves for Hill-Murray.

Shakopee 4, Stillwater 3

SHAKOPEE - Cooper Siegert scored with 4:14 left to boost Shakopee past Stillwater 4-3 at Shakopee Ice Arena in a matchup of teams from opposite ends of the metro, both of which reached the state Class 2A tournament last season.

Siegert, a senior forward in his fourth season on the Sabers varsity, also scored the lone goal of the second period to put No. 7-2A Shakopee (8-2-0) ahead 3-1.

No. 6-2A Stillwater (8-2-0) rallied in the third on back-to-back goals by junior Tyson Miller. Miller's second goal, his team-leading 13th of the season, pulled the Ponies into a 3-3 tie.

Shakopee outshot Stillwater 35-26. Sabers goaltender Niklas Huson made 23 saves while Stillwater's Gavin Bajda made 31 stops. Huson ranks fourth in the state in both goals-against average (1.20) and save percentage (.944).

Hibbing/Chisholm 7, Mahtomedi 4

HIBBING - Cole Swanson had a hat trick and Tate Swanson added two goals as Hibbing/Chisholm outscored Mahtomedi 7-4 in a meeting of top-ranked Class 1A teams at the Hibbing Memorial Building.

Cole Swanson, a sophomore forward, scored a power-play, shorthanded and even-strength goal in the second period as the teams combined for six goals.

Trevor Rogosheske scored twice on the power in the second for No. 5-1A Mahtomedi (3-5-2).

No. 2-1A Hibbing/Chisholm scored the game's final three goals. Tate Swanson's goal with 10:59 left gave the Bluejackets (9-1-0) a 5-4 lead. The senior forward, who leads Hibbing/Chisholm with 13 goals, scored on the power play with 8:34 remaining to. push the lead to 6-4. Kelin Eisner completed the scoring with 7:40 to play.

The teams combined for 24 penalties.

Rochester Lourdes 2, Blake 2 OT

ROCHESTER - Rochester Lourdes rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie Blake 2-2 in a matchup of top-20 ranked Class 1A teams at Graham Arena.

No. 7-1A Blake led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by Connor Briand before Joe Erickson scored 31 seconds into the second to give the Bears (8-2-1) their 2-0 lead.

Jameson Eidem and Owen Barclay scored midway through the second to the game for No. 18-1A Rochester Lourdes.

Anton Ackley made 38 saves for the Eagles (6-2-1) while Blake's Jake Iwan stopped 26 shots.

Detroit Lakes 3, East Grand Forks 2 OT

DETROIT LAKES - Easton Kennedy scored with 28 seconds left in overtime as Detroit Lakes recorded a 3-2 upset win over No. 8-1A East Grand Forks at Kent Freeman Arena.

Kennedy, a senior forward, leads Detroit Lakes with nine goals. He picked up a loose puck near his own blueline and skated into the Green Wave zone, breaking to the top of the circles and firing.

East Grand Forks (2-6-1), the defending state Class 1A champion, led 1-0 after a first-period goal by Nolan Meulebroeck. The Lakers answered with goals by Will Cymbaluk and Sully Braaten in the second. Max Bies tied the score midway through the third.

Griffin Lindberg made 47 saves for Detroit Lakes (5-4-0).

Bloomington Jefferson 8, Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids 1

COON RAPIDS - Mason Van Brunt and Kaden Larson each had a hat trick as Bloomington Jefferson stayed unbeaten with an 8-1 victory over Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids at the Coon Rapids Ice Center.

The Jaguars (9-0-0), Minnetonka (9-0-1) and Hibbing/Chisholm (9-1-0)  all have nine wins this season, a game behind 10-win Luverne (10-0-0).

Larson, a senior forward, added two assists as he leads the Jaguars with 19 points. 

Jackson Barsness scored in the first for Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids (3-6-0).

Delano 5, St. Cloud Cathedral 2

DELANO - Lance Halonen scored twice, his second goal being the eventual game winner, to lead Delano to a 5-2 win over St. Cloud Cathedral in a matchup of ranked teams at the Delano Area Sports Arena.

No. 20-1A St. Cloud Cathedral got a power-play goal from Bo Schmidt to start the second period. No. 3-1A Delano answered with Halonen's first goal midway through the period. Jackson Wollak gave the Tigers (7-2-0) the lead before Halonen's power-play goal with 1:21 left in the period made it 3-2.

Brody Geislinger and Daniel Halonen scored in the third for the Tigers while Brandan White had a goal for the Crusaders (4-6-0).

Luverne 4, Dodge County 3 OT

LUVERNE - Mallachi Domagala scored on a rebound 69 seconds into overtime to give keep Luverne unbeaten with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Dodge County at Blue Mound Ice Arena.

Dodge County (5-3-0) led 2-0 after the first on goals by Dylan Allen and Isiah Holtermann.

Colton Haubrich got No. 16-1A Luverne (10-0-0) on the scoreboard with a goal midway through the second. Haubrich tied the game 3:06 into the third before Will Bergman gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead with 12:01 to play.

The Wildcats tied the contest with a power-play goal by Nolan Steele with 9:46 remaining in regulation.

Luverne is the state's first team to reach 10 wins this season.

Duluth East 7, Duluth Denfeld 2

DULUTH - Mckennen Kramer and Zane Medlin each scored twice as Duluth East scored three goals in both the first and second periods in its 7-2 win over Duluth Denfeld at the Essentia Duluth Heritage Center.

Kramer added three assists for the Hounds (3-4-1). Medlin, a sophomore forward, opened the scoring for Duluth East. He added two assists and leads East with 12 points.

Alexander Udd and Mason Kingsley scored for Denfeld (1-6-1). Drew Doyle assisted on both goals.
