Hockey Night: Holy Angels all smiles after ending winless skid against BSM

Dec. 19: Cole Cheeseman has hat trick for Stars; Hermantown tops another Class 2A powerhouse; Cloquet knocks off Mahtomedi

Holy Angels 5, Benilde-St. Margaret's 2

ST. LOUIS PARK - Senior forward Cole Cheeseman scored three goals, all in the first period, as Holy Angels snapped a 14-game winless streak against Benilde-St. Margaret's with a 5-2 triumph on Friday at the St Louis Park Rec Center.

Cheeseman gave the No. 8-2A Stars (7-1-0) a 1-0 lead, tied it at 2-2 and put Holy Angels ahead 4-2 in the final minute of the first period. The scoring flurry doubled his goal output to six for the season, and his 25 points ranks second among the Stars.

Tyler Kirschner and Donovan Madsen scored just more than 2 minutes apart early in the first period to give No. 10-2A Bnenilde-St. Margaret's (2-3-1) a 2-1 lead.

Carter Hunsaker's empty-net goal in the final minute sealed the victory for the Stars, whose winless streak against the Red Knights dated to Feb. 19, 2010, when Holy Angels beat Benilde-St. Margaret's 4-3.

Hermantown 7, Maple Grove 4

MAPLE GROVE - Junior defenseman Gabe Swenson had five assists to give him 15 on the season as Hermantown used multiple offensive surges to beat Maple Grove 7-4 at the Maple Grove Community Center.

The No. 1-1A Hawks (7-0-2) scored three unanswered goals in both the second and third periods as they beat a top-ranked Class 2A team for the second time in three outings.

Jaden Roueche gave No. 11-2A Maple Grove (5-3-0) a 1-0 lead with the lone goal of the first period. The teams combined for five goals in each of the second and third periods.

Seven players scored for Hermantown, which defeated No. 12-2A Rosemount 7-3 on Dec. 13.

Eden Prairie 4, Grand Rapids 3

EDINA - Riley Wolkove's goal 4:25 into the third period capped a four-goal run for Eden Prairie as the Eagles rallied for a 4-3 win over Grand Rapids in second-round action of the Edina Holiday Classic at Braemar Arena.

Grand Rapids (2-7-1) led 2-0 after the first on goals by Ander Rajala and Jameson Duell.

No. 18-2A Eden Prairie (5-2-1) got on the scoreboard in the second with goals by Christian Lee, RJ Thompson and Owen Konrad.

Wolkove gave the Eagles a 4-2 lead before the Thunderhawks' Seth Carlson scored on the power play midway through the third.

Eden Prairie has won five straight after starting the season 0-2-1.

Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 4, Mahtomedi 2

CLOQUET - Cloquet/Esko/Carlton scored three power-play goals as it beat Mahtomedi 4-2 in a meeting of top-ranked Class 1A teams at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center.

Senior forward Conor Sullivan scored a power-play goal in both the first and second periods to lead No. 12-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton. Jordy Sewell added a goal and two assists for the Lumberjacks (5-5-0).

Brock Gutterman and Devin O'Donnell each had a goal and an assist for No. 5-1A Mahtomedi (3-4-2).

Sartell 3, Gentry Academy 2

SARTELL - Preston Deragisch scored with 5:13 left as Sartell picked up a 3-2 comeback win over Gentry Academy at the Scheels Athletic Complex.

Deragisch, a junior forward, has scored nine goals this season and six in his last five games for the No. 6-1A Sabres (7-1-0).

Gentry Academy (6-4-0) led 2-0 after the first period after goals by Everett Nelson and Jaxon Cook.

Isaac Mentzer and Caleb Thompson scored in the second for Sartell.

Brody Potthoff made 28 saves for the win, which was the 270th for Sartell head coach Ryan Hacker.

Orono 4, St. Cloud Cathedral 3

ST. CLOUD - Jake Bradstock scored with 4:41 left to give Orono a 4-3 win over St. Cloud Cathedral in a back-and-forth contest between ranked teams at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

Ryan De Lange scored the game's first two goals for No. 10-1A Orono (3-4-2) in the first.

No. 20-1A Cathedral (4-5-0) answered with two goals in the second with goals by Carter Bakeberg and Bo Schmidt. The Crusaders then took a 3-2 lead with Caleb Trant's goal 3:58 into the third.

Rory Kvern tied the contest with 6:05 remaining, setting the stage for Bradstock's game winner.

Fergus Falls 4, Little Falls 3

FERGUS FALLS - Luke Johnson's goal midway through the second period held up as the game winner as Fergus Falls defeated Little Falls 4-3 at the Fergus Falls Community Arena.

Johnson's goal capped a three-goal run for the Otters (3-5-0) as they pulled away after the teams were tied 2-2.

Remi Chisholm, a senior forward, scored two shorthanded goals for Little Falls (1-5-0).
