Hockey Night: Delano tops Orono in unofficial Rivalry Night

Dec. 18: South rallies to win Battle of Lakeville; East Ridge slips past neighbor Woodbury; South wins St. Paul showdown

Delano 3, Orono 1

DELANO - Brody Geislinger scored twice in the opening 5 minutes of the third perio as Delano surged past Orono 3-1 on Thursday at Delano Area Sports Arena in what was an unofficial Rivalry Night around the state.

Geislinger scored 34 seconds into the third period to put the No. 3-1A Tigers (6-2-0) ahead 2-1. He made it 3-1 with his second goal of the game and third of the season 3:02 later, jamming a loose puck laying behind Orono goaltender Max Lewin into the net. 

Delano an Orono are separated by 12.4 miles of U.S. Highway 12 and are regular contenders for the section and state championships, often facing each other in the playoffs.

Ryan De Lange scored the lone goal of the first period for No. 10-1A Orono (2-4-2). Delano's Daniel Halonen scored the lone goal of the second. 

Delano goaltender Lincoln Truax stopped 17 of 18 shots. Orono's Max Lewin made 33 saves.

Lakeville South 4, Lakeville North 3 OT

LAKEVILLE - Nate Neyer's goal 2:04 into overtime capped a furious comeback for Lakeville South in its 4-3 win over arch rival Lakeville North at Ames Arena.

No. 20-2A Lakeville South (2-4-0) trailed 3-1 heading into the final period. Calvin O'Reilly and Charlie Hunst scored 2:16 apart midway through the third to tie it at 3-3.

Jax Taylor scored twice and MaGuire Dewees added a goal in the second as Lakeville North (2-5-1) built its two goal lead.

East Ridge 2, Woodbury 0

WOODBURY - Ivan Schmitz scored both goals as East Ridge defeated intracity rival Woodbury 2-0 at the M Health Fairview Sports Center.

Elias Tomaska recorded his second shutout of the season for the Raptors (4-4-0).

Schmitz, a senior forward, leads East Ridge with seven goals. His first goal put the Raptors ahead 1-0 6:05 into the second period and his second was into an empty net with 35 seconds remaining.

Michael Pietruszewski madÄ™ 29 saves for Woodbury (2-6-1).

South St. Paul 2, St. Paul 1

SOUTH ST. PAUL - Senior forward Brody Nerka's shorthanded goal late in the second period held up as the game winner as South St. Paul beat St. Paul 2-1 at Doug Woog Arena.

Gavin Olsen scored for St. Paul (1-7-0) and Owen Shepard answered for South St. Paul (5-2-1) in the first period.

Michal Francis made 11 saves to earn the victory, his fifth of the season, for the Packers. Max Johnson made 27 saves for St. Paul.

Minnetonka 5, Chanhassen 1

MINNETONKA - Cash Hardie scored twice as Minnetonka scored the final four goals on its way to 5-1 win over Chanhassen in a matchup of top-20 teams that have had epic battles in the playoffs in recent years at the Pagel Activity Center.

Ethan Sturgis and Tate Hardacre each added a goal and an assist for No. 2-2A Minnetonka. Max Aronson and Danny Browning each picked up two assists for the Skippers (8-0-1).

Kalen Balliet scored a power-play goal in the first period for No. 17-2A Chanhassen (3-3-1).

St. Michael-Albertville 7, Anoka 1

ANOKA - Tanner Esterberg and Braeden Waller each had two goals as St. Michael-Albertville cruised to a 7-1 win over Anoka at  the Anoka Ice Arena.

Esterberg, a senior forward, has scored eight goals in the last three games for the Knights (4-4-0). Hunter Hansen, Owen Volkenant and Esterberg scored in the first for the Knights as they scored three times in 79 seconds to lead 3-1 in the opening 4:02.

Owen Verness scored in the second for St. Michael-Albertville and Esterberg added a power-play goal in the third before Waller scored twice in 24 seconds midway through the period.

Luca Gannucci scored in the first for Anoka (1-7-0).

Stillwater 5, Mounds View 4

STILLWATER - Liam McGlynn's goal 3:20 into the third period held up as the game winner as Stillwater hung on for a 5-4 win over Mounds View at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

No. 6-2A Stillwater scored three times in the second as the Ponies (8-1-0) led 4-3. Tyson Miller led Stillwater with a goal and two assists.

Russ Eck led Mounds View with two goals and an assist while Chase Ballinger recorded one goal and two assists for Mounds View (0-9-0).
