Hockey Night: Defenseman's first goal a winner for Chanhassen

Dec. 16: Kaleb Bergman lifts Storm past Blaine in OT; STA rallies in closing minutes to tie Mahtomedi; Northfield outlasts Waseca in OT in potential playoff preview

Chanhassen 3, Blaine 2 OT

BLAINE - Kaleb Bergman took feed from Logan Smith and deposited it into an open net as Chanhassen outlasted Blaine 3-2 in overtime in a matchup of top-20 Class 2A teams on Tuesday at Fogerty Arena.

Smith, who had two goals for the No. 17-2A Storm (3-2-1), started the winning play by grabbing a loose puck off a turnover as Blaine failed to get the puck out of its defensive end. Smith fired a pass through the slot to Bergman, a junior defenseman whose goal was his first of the season.

Smith gave Chanhassen leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first period. Franklin Loo tied it at 2-2 for No. 14-2A Blaine (5-2-1) with the lone goal of the third period.

 Chanhassen goaltender Tyler Jackson made 35 saves. Blaine's Wesley Andrle stopped 42 shots.

Mahtomedi 2, St. Thomas Academy 2 OT

MENDOTA HEIGHTS - Senior Cole Braunshausen and freshman phenom Maverick McKinnon scored in the final 5:26 of the third period as St. Thomas Academy averted a major upset by forging a 2-2 with Mahtomedi at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.

McKinnon's goal, his ninth of the season, came with 2:08 remaining. Braunshausen, fifth in the state in points with 28, scored just more than 3 minutes earlier for the No. 3-2A Cadets (7-1-1).

Sophomore defenseman Brock Gutterman scored the lone goal of the second period and put the No. 5-1A Zephyrs (3-3-2) ahead 2-0 early in the third.

Northfield 1, Waseca 0 OT

WASECA - Bridger Riley scored 4:12 into overtime to lift Northfield past Waseca 1-0 in a matchup of top contenders for the Section 1A playoff title.

Riley, a senior defenseman, scored off a face-off win by Michael Steward. Riley took a cross-ice pass from defensive partner Walker Sorem and wristed a low shot from along the boards at the top of the right face-off circle. 

Northfield outshot Waseca, 48-24. Waseca goaltender Josiah Schmidtke was superb in making 47 saves.

Bloomington Jefferson 3, Chaska 2

BLOOMINGTON - Logan Peterson's goal late in the second period help up as the winner as Bloomington Jefferson remained unbeaten with a 3-2 victory over Chaska at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

Brayden Thomas and David Kovar also scored for the Jaguars (7-0-0).

Jake Campbell scored both goals for Chaska (2-5-1). He leads the Hawks with 13 points.

St. Cloud Cathedral 2, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 1

ST. CLOUD - Camden Kroll and Talen Ruprecht scoret third-period goals as St. Cloud Cathedral upended Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 2-1 at the Municipal Athletic Complex for the Crusaders' third straight win after enduring a four-game losing skid.

Ruprecht's goal, the game-winner, came with 1:02 remaining. No. 20-1A St. Cloud Cathedral improved to 4-4-0.

Kaden Willis scored the lone goal of the opening period as No. 11-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (4-5-0) took the early lead.

Buffalo 5, Benilde-St. Margaret's 2

BUFFALO - Buffalo scored three times in the third period as the Bison upset No. 10-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's 5-2 at the Buffalo Civic Center.

Cooper Dalbec gave the Bison (4-3-0) a 3-2 lead with 10:40 remaining. Nolan Rumsch pushed the lead to 4-2 with 5:53 to play and Evan Hinnenkamp's empty-net goal with 1:17 completed the scoring.

Keegan Davis and Aaron Hatlestad scored for the Red Knights (2-2-1)

Northern Lakes 9, Little Falls 0

LITTLE FALLS - Josiah Reier recorded five points and Sam Suja picked up his first shutout of the season No. 19-1A Northern Lakes defeated Little Falls 9-0 at Exchange Arena.

Northern Lakes (5-2-1) pulled away with five second-period goals. Reier netted two goals to go with three assists.

Northern Lakes outshot Little Falls (1-4-0), 53-12.

Holy Angels 11, St. Louis Park 5

ST. LOUIS PARK - Lincoln Ayers Assad continued his torrid scoring streak with four first-period goals as No. 8-2A Holy Angels defeated St. Louis Park 11-5 at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Ayers Assad, a senior forward, has scored 12 goals in the last three games giving him 16 this season. 

The Stars (6-1-0) scored the game's first four goals before St. Louis Park (3-5-0) answered with two goals in 12 seconds. Holy Angels then closed the period with three goals, two by Ayers Assad, for a 7-2 lead.

Ayers Assad added a goal in the third. Chase Russ had two goals and five assists while Gabe Perron added two goals and three assists. Cole Cheeseman was credited with six assists and Madden Brown scored twice.

Leo Schmoll scored two goals for St. Louis Park.

Southwest Christian/Richfield 4, South St. Paul 3

RICHFIELD - Southwest Christian/Richfield scored three-straight goals as it recorded a 4-3 win over South St. Paul at the Richfield Ice Arena.

The Stars (2-4-0) and Packers (4-2-1) were tied 2-2 after the first period following Brett Davis' goal midway through the period.

Eric Stelter scored 99 seconds into the second to give the Stars a 3-2 lead. Henry Feltman scored with 3:57 left in the period to make it 4-2.

Jaxon Horning's third-period goal brought South St. Paul within one but that was as close as the Packers were unable to get a tying goal.

Alexandria 3, Detroit Lakes 2

ALEXANDRIA - Brody Berg's second-period goal held up as the game winner as Alexandria defeated Detroit Lakes 3-2 at the PrimeWest Health Runestone Community Center.

Berg's goal, his team-high sixth of the season, gave Alexandria (3-4-0) a 3-0 lead. Detroit Lakes (3-4-0) rallied in the third behind goals by Lawsen Justesen and Easton Kennedy.

Owen Bridge made 25 saves, 14 alone in the third period, for the win.
