Hockey Night: Stars shine for St. Thomas Academy

Dec. 13: Goaltending, scoring duo superb for Cadets in win over Hill-Murray; Minnetonka outlasts Wayzata; Apple Valley/Burnsville, East Ridge notch big wins

St. Thomas Academy 5, Hill-Murray 1

MAPLEWOOD - Freshman Owen Ryan continued his stellar play in goal and forwards Cole Braunshausen and Maverick McKinnon continued to score at blistering pace as St. Thomas Academy assured itself of a spot just behind Moorhead in the coming week's Class 2A rankings on Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Metro East Conference arch rival Hill-Murray at Aldrich Arena.

Ryan stopped 29 of 30 shots as he improved to 5-1-0 on the season. His 0.50 goals-against average and .979 save percentage are the best in the state.

Braunshause, a senior, had a goal and two assists and McKinnon, a freshman, had a goal and an assist. Braunshausen ranks fourth in the state in both goals (13) and points (27).

No. 4-2A St. Thomas Academy (7-1-0) led 2-0 after the first and 4-0 heading into the third.

Landon Sampair scored the lone goal for No. 2-2A Hill-Murray (3-1-2) with 2:51 remaining.

East Ridge 7, Roseville 6 OT

ROSEVILLE - Sophomore Wrex Walz scored 4:15 into overtime as East Ridge outgunned Roseville for a 7-6 Suburban East Conference triumph that most likely felt long overdue for Raptors, who have lost three games by a goal, two of them in overtime, this season.

Walz, stationed in front of the net on a power play, deflected a shot from the point by Nate Chlebeck for the winning goal. The goal was Walz's fourth of the season.

Wyatt Hauer scored three goals and Garrett Hites and Grant Jakaboski each had a goal and three assists for Roseville (4-3-0).

Brayden Braatz scored twice and Ian Dwyer had three assists for East Ridge (2-4-0).

Minnetonka 3, Wayzata 2 OT

PLYMOUTH - Defenseman Tate Hardacre, sneaking to the front of the net on a rush, slammed home a close-range shot as Minnetonka beat Lake Conference rival Wayzata 3-2 in overtime at the Plymouth Ice Center.

Cash Hardie ended his length-of the-ice solo rush by dishing a pass from behind the net to Hardacre. The goal was the third of the season for Hardacre, a senior.

The teams traded goals, and leads, in the first two periods. Kruz Sauer opened the scoring for No. 15-2A Wayzata (3-3-1) in the first. Hardie answered with a goal less than a minute later for the No. 3-2A  Skippers (6-0-1) to tie it at 1-1.

Minnetonka's Cooper Rannow and Wayzata's Kruz Sauer traded goals in the second. Chase Jerdee stopped 23 shots for the Skippers; Ryan Pelllinger made 25 saves for Wayzata.

Jerdee, a senior, ranks second in the state in goals-against average (0.98) and third in save percentage (.957).

Apple Valley/Burnsville 2, Eastview 1

APPLE VALLEY - Andrew Benolkin scored with 10 seconds left to give Apple Valley/Burnsville a 2-1 win over Eastview in a matchup of neighboring teams that share the cozy confines of the Apple Valley Sports Arena.

The Eagles (2-4-0) trailed 1-0 when Eastview's Sam Wooten scored 1:45 into the third.

Avery Buckner scored on a power play with 4:16 left, setting the stage for Benolkin's game winner.

Miles Johnson made 21 saves for the Eagles while Chris Ernster stopped 22 shots for Eastview (2-7-0).

Duluth Marshall 2, Rochester Lourdes 1

ROCHESTER - Kyler Black's shorthanded goal with 3:14 remaining in overtime gave unbeaten Duluth Marshall a 2-1 win over Rochester Lourdes at Graham Arena.

The Hilltoppers (7-0-1) tied the game with four seconds remaining on Benson Peterson's goal.

Lourdes (6-2-0) had a 1-0 lead on a second-period goal by Jameson Eidem.

Duluth Marshall, which defeated Rochester Mayo 5-0 Friday, outshot Lourdes 41-23. Anton Ackley made 39 saves for Lourdes while Wyatt Brown's 22 saves allowed him to improve to 6-0-1 this season.

Hibbing/Chisholm 5, Totino-Grace 0

HIBBING - Sophomore Whitaker Rewertz scored his first three goals of the season and Gavin Lamphere recorded a shutout as Hibbing/Chisholm recorded a 5-0 win over Totino-Grace at Hibbing Memorial Building.

No. 2-1A Hibbing/Chisholm scored all of its goals in the second as it pulled away to the win. Tate Swanson had three assists for the Bluejackets (7-1-0). In addition to making 19 saves for the win, Lamphere was credited with an assist on Rewertz's first goal.

Noah Moch stopped 20 of 21 shots in a relief role for Totino-Grace (5-2-0).

Hermantown 7, Rosemount 3

HERMANTOWN - Micklain Martalock's shorthanded goal with 10:08 remaining started a three-goal run by unbeaten Hermantown as it pulled away for a 7-3 win over Rosemount as the two ranked teams squared off at the Hermantown Ice Arena.

Beau Christy's two goals allowed No. 1-1A Hermantown (5-0-2) to lead 3-2 after two periods.

Ethan Aysta's goal gave the Hawks a 4-2 lead. No. 10-2A Rosemount (7-3-0) cut the lead to 4-3 with 11:41 remaining. With Rosemount on the power play, Martalock's goal gave the Hawks a 5-3 lead and momentum.

Kole Lendzyk also scored twice for Hermantown.

Rosemount beat Grand Rapids 6-0 on Friday in the first leg of its northern swing.

Stilwater 6, Blaine 3

STILLWATER - Stillwater scored five goals, three by Tyson Miller, in the second period as it pulled away to a 6-3 win over previously unbeaten Blaine in a matchup of top-15 teams at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

Miller, a junior forward, scored shorthanded, at even strength and on a power play, during that period for No. 7-2A Stillwater. He now has 10 goals for the Ponies (7-1-0).

Brady Lockman scored twice for No. 13-2A Blaine (5-1-1).

Gavin Bajda madÄ™ 37 saves for Stillwater.

Bemidji 4, Sartell 2

BEMIDJI - Bemidji scored three times in the second period as it handed  Sartell, ranked No. 5 in Class 1A, its first loss of the season, winning 4-2 at the Bemidji Community Arena.

The Lumberjacks (4-2-0) trailed 1-0 until Griffin Dewar's power-play goal 52 seconds into the second. Sartell (6-1-0) retook the lead when Brayden Klande scored nearly three minutes later.

Bemidji closed the period with goals by Quinn Niemi and Taevon Welle.

Landon Knott scored an empty-net goal in the final second to complete the scoring.

Cretin-Derham Hall 2, Woodbury 1 OT

WOODBURY - Special teams keyed Cretin-Derham Hall to a 2-1 overtime win over Woodbury at the M Health Fairview Sports Center.

The Raiders (5-2-0) tied the game with a shorthanded goal by Alexander Bloedow in the second period and then a power-play goal by Torin Tompkins was the game winner.

Brayden Herrig scored in the first period for Woodbury (2-5-1).

No. 16-2A Cretin-Derham Hall outshot Woodbury 47-24. Michael Pietruszewski madÄ™ 45 saves for the Royals while Ernie Drury stopped 23 shots for the win.
