Hockey Night: Daniel Halonen's blast boosts Delano to OT win

Dec. 12: Tigers get past Monticello; Warroad knocks off Mahtomedi; Sartell, Duluth Marshall stay unbeaten

Delano 3, Monticello 2 OT

MONTICELLO - Daniel Halonen's goal 3:33 into overtime lifted Delano past Monticello 3-2 on Friday at Moose Sherritt Ice Arena.

Halonen, a senior, was all alone stationed to the left of the goal when a shot on net deflected straight to him. He one-timed a blast that beat Moose goalie Nolan Wurm.

Halonen opened the scoring early in the first and Brady Kangas added a goal in the opening period as the No. 3-1A Tigers (5-2-0) took a 2-0 lead into the third. Kangas and Halonen share the team lead with seven goals each.

No. 13-1A Monticello (1-2-2) rallied in the third on goal from Brady McGriff and Liam O'Donnell scored in the final 1:36 of the third to force the overtime session.

East Grand Forks 5, Orono 5 OT

LONG LAKE - Defending state Class 1A champion East Grand Forks scored four of the final five goals, including the final three of the third period, to tie Orono 5-5 in overtime at the Orono Ice Arena.

Senior forward Tucker Lovejoy scored three goals for the Green Wave, giving him a team-best five on the season. Lovejoy's first goal came with No. 7-1A East Grand Forks (2-3-1) training 3-0 late in the second. He scored again with 12 seconds left in the second to pull the Green Wave to within 4-2.

Nolan Meulebroeck and Lovejoy scored 54 second apart in the third period to pull the Green Wave to within 5-4 and Shawn Lind tied it with 6 minutes remaining. 

Standout senior Jackson Knight scored twice and added an assist as the No. 12-1A Spartans (2-2-2) built their 3-0 lead.

Warroad 4, Mahtomedi 2

STILLWATER - Ayven Hontvet scored the game-winner early in the second period as Warroad topped Mahtomedi 4-2 at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

No. 4-1A Warroad (6-2-0) led 2-1 after the fist after Warriors' goals from Gavin Andersen and Ryan Shaugabay sandwiched one from Mahtomedi's Henry Sampair.

Easton DeZelar tied it at 2-2 for No. 6-1A Mahtomedi (2-3-1) 4:32 into the the second period.

Broden Hontvet scored into an empty net with 1:22 left to clinch the win for the Warriors.

Sartell 7, Roseau 1

ROSEAU - Brayden Klande scored twice an added an assist and Devin Jacobs and Isaac Mentzer each had a goal and three assists to help power Sartell past Roseau 7-1 at Roseau Memorial Arena, the sixth victory in as many starts for the Sabres.

Anton Klint's power-play goal opened the scoring in the first period to give Roseau (1-6-0) its short-lived lead.

No. 5-1A Sartell (6-0-0) scored two goals in the second and four more in the third. Sartell outshot the Rams (1-6-0) 32-12. 

Moorhead, Duluth Marshall, Luverne, Minnetonka, Rosemount and Sartell are the only teams in the state to have won at least six games so far.

River Lakes 5, New Ulm 3

RICHMOND - River Lakes scored the game's final two goals as the Stars recorded their first win of the season, rallying for a 5-3 win over New Ulm at River Lakes Civic Arena.

Griffin Mayhew's second goal of the night proved to be the game winner with 6:14 remaining. Jaiden Mackedanz completed the scoring with 3:22 left.

The Stars (1-4-0) had a 3-1 lead after Mayhew's goal with 7:05 remaining the second. Mayhew, a senior forward, now has three goals this season.

New Ulm (3-2-0) rallied behind its power play. Brody Nordby scored on the man advantage late in the second and Mason Buegler added a power-play goal in the third period's first two minutes to tie the game.

Rosemount 6, Grand Rapids 0

GRAND RAPIDS - Channing Goodwin and Quinton VeDepo each scored twice and Sam Clements made 20 saves for the shutout as Rosemount recorded a 6-0 win over Grand Rapids at Yanmar Arena.

The shutout was Clements' first this season for No. 10-2A Rosemount. Goodwin was also credited with two assist for the Irish (7-2-0).

Luke Sherlock made 23 saves for Grand Rapids (2-4-1).

Duluth Marshall 5, Rochester Mayo 0

ROCHESTER - Duluth Marshall broke out for four first-period goals as it shut out Rochester Mayo 5-0 at Graham Arena.

Braydon Hannula gave the Hilltoppers (6-0-1) the lead with 3:57 elapsed in the first. Thirty-one seconds later, Viljami Sinisalo scored for a 2-0 lead. With 1:04 remaining, Benson Peterson scored and 53 seconds later, Sam Berry scored for the 4-0 lead.

Davey Schachte added a second-period goal to complete the scoring. Eli Thorson and Peterson were each credited with two assists as Duluth Marshall outshot Mayo, 40-15.

Jose Lehtimaki made 15 saves for the shutout. Kaden Johnston had 35 saves for Mayo (3-4-0).

International Falls 13, Wadena-Deer Creek 2

INTERNATIONAL FALS - Brodie Baldwin and Andrew Eide each had a hat trick as International Falls recorded a 13-2 win over Wadena-Deer Creek at Bronco Arena.

The Broncos (4-0-0) have scored 52 goals in their four games and outshot the Wolverines 57-14.

Cole Sundby and Owen Weiner scored for Wadena-Deer Creek (1-6-0).

Zach Youso, Anthony Yerxa and William Yerxa added two goals each. Both Anthony Yerxa and Carter Thompson were credited with three assists. Anthony Yerxa, a senior forward, leads the state with 15 goals and ranks in a tie for third with 26 points.
