MAPLE GROVE - Freshman R.J. Thompson completed his hat trick in overtime as previously winless Eden Prairie knocked off previously unbeaten Maple Grove 5-4 on Saturday at the Maple Grove Community Center.
Thompson took a feed from Jack Peterson and, from the right face-off circle and unloaded a low shot that skidded through the leg pads of Maple Grove goaltender Ryder Skanson for the winning goal.
Thompson opened the scoring in the first period and tied the score at 4-4 with 7:51 remaining. He leads the Eagles (1-2-1) with 11 points.
No. 7-2A Maple Grove (4-1-0) led 4-2 4:39 into the third period on Wyatt Kuznik's goal.
HIBBING - Matyas Kratochvil scored what proved to be the winning goal early in the third period as Shakopee handed Hibbing/Chisholm, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, its first loss of the season in a 4-2 triumph at the Hibbing Memorial Building.
Will O'Neill also scored in the third period for No. 9-2A Shakopee (4-1-0), a state tournament qualifier last season.
Hibbing (5-1-0), also a state tournament qualifier last March, got a late goal from Joe Gabardi as its comeback effort fell short. The Bluejackets had scored five or more goals in their first five games, winning them by a combined 32-10.
Niklas Huson made 34 saves for Shakopee, and his 1.40 goals-against average ranks as the eighth-best in the state.
Tate Swanson opened the scoring for Hibbing/Chisholm midway through the first. Tristin Wassengeso and Cooper Sigert answered with first-period goals for the Sabers.
EDINA - Bode McConnell had a goal and two assists as Edina rallied from an early deficit to beat Benilde-St. Margaret's 4-2 at Braemar Ice Arena in a matchup of Sectio 6AA rivals.
Grayson Quirck and Donovan Madsen scored in the closing minutes of the second period to put the No. 12-2A Red Knights (2-1-0) ahed 2-0.
Nash Pine pulled No. 6-2A Edina (3-2-0) to within 2-1 with 52 seconds left in the first.
The floodgates opened in the third for the Hornets, who got goals from Dylan Donnay, Tucker Johnson and McConnell, who scored into an empty net with 16 seconds remaining.
ROGERS - Caden Zasada's goal midway through the third period accounted for all of the scoring as Hill-Murray won a defensive struggle against Rogers 1-0 at the Rogers Ice Arena.
Rogers' Tyler Bacon and Hill-Murray's Grayson Hanggi were locked in a goaltenders' duel throughout. Hanggi, considered a top candidate for the Frank Brimsek Award that goes to the state's top senior goaltender, stopped all 29 shots he faced. Bacon, also a senior, stopped 36 of 36 shots.
WARROAD - Gavin Andersen had a goal and two assists as Warroad topped Grand Rapids 4-1 at The Gardens Arena for its fourth straight victory and a weekend sweep of northern rivals.
Andersen's goal midway through the second period put the No. 5-1A Warriors (5-2-0) ahead 2-1 and proved the be the winner.
Ayven Hontvet and Grayson Bentow added insurance goal for Warroad, which beat No. 20-2A Rock Ridge 3-1 on Friday.
Seth Carlson scored 2:06 into the second period for No. 19-2A Grand Rapids (2-2-1) to tie the score at 1-1.
Finn Hanson made 22 saves for Warroad; Luke Sherlock had 27 saves for Grand Rapids.
EAST GRAND FORKS - Cloquet/Esko/Carlton scored three times in the third period to lead the Lumberjacks past East Grand Forks in a matchup of top small-school teams at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.
Conor Sullivan's goal with 4:26 left gave No. 14-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (3-3-0) a 2-1 lead. Davis Snesrud and Cole Painovich added goals in the closing minutes.
Wyatt Cordts scored a second-period goal for No. 3-1A East Grand Forks (2-3-0).
Jacob Iallonardo made 32 saves for the Lumberjacks.
FARMINGTON - Leyton Grant's first goal of the season was a timely one as he scored with 3:30 left in overtime to give Farmington a 6-5 win over Eagan at Schmitz-Maki Arena.
The Tigers (3-0-0), who trailed 2-1 after the first, saw four players score goals in the second as they built a 5-3 lead.
Eagan (1-3-1) tied the game when Liam Thomas scored his second goal of the night 2:04 into the third.
COON RAPIDS - Andrew Clark's second goal of the game gave Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids a 2-1 overtime win over Owatonna at the Coon Rapids Ice Center.
Clark, a senior forward, scored with 2:26 left in regulation to tie the game. The two goals were his first of the season.
The teams did not score until Owatonna's Cameron Molina scored with 7:31 to play.
Braxton Ringhoffer had 36 saves for Owatonna (2-3-0). PJ Reierson made 16 saves for Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids (3-2-0).
ANOKA - Evan Dreger scored a power-play goal 3:41 into overtime as Anoka defeated St. Cloud 4-3 at the Anoka Ice Arena.
Anoka (1-3-0) scored three times in the second period after St. Cloud (4-3-0) took a 2-0 lead after the first. Anoka's first win of the season snapped St. Cloud's three-game win streak.
Corbin Matanich tied the game for the Crush when he scored with 3:38 left in regulation.
Landon Pender made 32 saves for Anoka.
THIEF RIVER FALLS - Johnny Rogalla's power-play goal with 1:09 left in the third period gave Thief River Falls a 5-4 win over Hopkins at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
The Prowlers (1-4-0) trailed Hopkins 4-3 with three minutes left to play. Jed Kelly scored with 2:53 remaining to tie the game. After a Hopkins penalty, Rogalla scored on a one-timer from close range, finishing a pretty three-way passing ignited from a face-off win.
William Moseley gave Hopkins (1-3-1) a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal in the first. Thief River Falls responded with three-straight goals, the last being a power-play goal by Rogalla with 5:16 left in the second.
William Hoiska brought Hopkins within one, 3-2, with a power-play goal with 1:11 remaining in the second.
Hopkins scored twice in 64 seconds late in the third period to take a 4-3 lead with 3:29 remaining, setting up Thief River Falls' late game heroics.
