Hockey Night: Sartell outlasts Gentry Academy in OT

Dec. 2: The Sabres stay unbeaten thanks to Brayden Klande's clutch goal; Hermantown, Warroad survive tough matchups

Sartell 6, Gentry Academy 5 OT

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Senior forward Brayden Klande's power-play goal 3:40 into overtime lifted Sartell past Gentry Academy 6-5 on Tuesday at TCO Sports Garden.

Gentry Academy (3-2-0) held leads of 1-0, 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4, but No. 6-1A Sartell (3-0-0) answered with goal each time. Devin Jacobs' goal with 1:32 tied the score at 5-5 and sent the game into overtime.

Sartell, in Class 1A after years of toiling as a Class 2A team in the playoffs, has scored at least five goals in all three of its victories and is the early frontrunner in Section 6A.

Jacobs finished with two goals as did Tanner Burris for the Sabres, who got 19 saves from goaltender Brody Potthoff. 

Jaxon Cook led Gentry Academy with two goals.

Hermantown 3, Rock Ridge 1

VIRGINIA - Hermantown erupted for three third-period goals as it rallied to defeat Rock Ridge 3-1 in a matchup of ranked teams (in Class 1A and 2A) at Iron Trail Motors and Event Center.

The Hawks (2-0-1) trailed 1-0 after two periods, then shifted into high gear. Bode Madill tied the game at 1-1 3:07 into the final period. Micklain Martalock gave No. 2-1A Hermantown a 2-1 lead with 11:46 remaining and Kole Lyndzyk's shorthanded goal midway through the final period rounded out the scoring.

Hermantown only had two shots in the first period while No. 20-2A Rock Ridge (2-3-0) had 13, including Rory Scuffy's goal with 11:59 remaining in the opening period.

The Hawks limited Rock Ridge to 10 total shots in the second and third periods while they had 24 of their own.

Bryce Francisco made 22 saves for the win.

Warroad 4, East Grand Forks 2

WARROAD - Warroad scored the game's first three goals and didn't look back, defeating East Grand Forks 4-2 in a showdown between two teams ranked in Class 1A's top five at The Gardens Arena.

Ayven Hontvet opened the scoring just 51 seconds into the game for No. 5 Warroad (3-2-0). Gavin Andersen pushed the lead to 2-0 by scoring with six seconds left in the period.

Andersen gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead by scoring 3:40 into the second. No, 3 East Grand Forks (2-2-0) cut the lead to 3-1 when Jace Panzer scored with 15 seconds left in the second.

Andersen completed his hat trick with a goal with 4:07 remaining. The Green Wave's Tucker Lovejoy scored with 1:48 left for the final score.

Finn Hanson made 32 saves for the win.

The teams have combined to win each of the past seven Section 8A championships.

Centennial 4, White Bear Lake 1

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Centennial scored three unanswered goals, including two from senior Nick Carls, to close out the first period en route to a 4-1 upset victory over White Bear Lake at the TCO Sports Garden.

Nolan Border also scored in the first period for the Cougars (2-3-0), which tightened up its defense after allowing three or more goals in each of its first four games.

Liam Maloy scored the lone goal for No. 10-2A White Bear Lake (1-1-1).

Quinn Gould made 25 saves for Centennial; White Bear Lake's Riley Helmberger sopped 41 shots.

Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 2, Minneapolis 0

MINNEAPOLIS - Mason Robbins scored in the first period, Conor Sullivan scored late in the third and Jacob Iallonardo stopped all 18 shots he faced as Cloquet/Esko/Carlton shut down Minneapolis 2-0 at Parade Ice Garden.

No. 14-1A Cloquet (2-2-0) has won two straight after starting the season 0-2-0.

The loss was the first of the season for No. 19-1A Minneapolis (3-1-0), which beat Mankato East, Fergus Falls and Hutchinson by a combined 15-2.

Rogers 3, Wayzata 1

ROGERS - Rogers scored twice in 19 seconds midway through the second period as the Royals defeated Wayzata 3-1 as the ranked teams faced off at the Rogers Ice Arena.

Cole Bumgarner gave No. 11-2A Rogers (3-3-0) a 1-0 with 7:21 left in the second. Jayden Kurtz then scored shorthanded 19 seconds later to make 2-0. 

No. 14-2A Wayzata's Jake Nawrocki scored with 1:45 left in the second but Rogers' Colton Schantzen pushed the Royals' lead to 3-1 with his goal with 11:57 remaining.

Ryan Pellinger made 24 saves for the Trojans (2-3-0), while Tyler Bacon stopped 19 shots for Rogers.

Stillwater 3, East Ridge 2 OT

STILLWATER - Tate Batchelor's second goal of the night lifted Stillwater to a 3-2 overtime win past East Ridge at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

East Ridge (0-3-0) led 2-1 after two periods thanks to power-play goals by Lance Kohnen and Ivan Schmitz.

Batchelor scored with 3:27 left in regulation to tie the contest and then scored with 3:53 remaining in overtime to give the No. 4-2A Stillwater (4-0-0) the win.

Cambridge-Isanti 6, Chisago Lakes 2

LINDSTROM - Blake Wotachek and Levi Machovec combined for five goals as Cambridge-Isanti recorded its first win of the season by defeating Chisago Lakes 6-2 at the Chisago Lakes Ice Arena.

Wotachek, a junior forward, and Machovec, a sophomore forward, each scored twice in the first period for the Bluejackets (1-4-0). Machovec's goals were his first ones this season.

Wotachek completed his hat trick 13 seconds into the second period and Jackson Ziebarth gave Cambridge-Isanti a 6-0 lead 5:30 into the period.

Quinlyn Ryan scored both goals for Chisago Lakes (3-1-1).

Zach Bauer made 42 saves for Cambridge-Isanti.

Bemidji 6, Thief River Falls 5

THIEF RIVER FALLS - Bemidji's Taevon Welle scored five goals but Joel Prokop's goal with 9:24 left was the game winner as the Lumberjacks defeated Thief River Falls 6-5 at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Thief River Falls (0-3-0) led 4-2 after Spencer Anderson's second power-play goal of the night. Welle scored with 16 seconds left in the second to bring Bemidji (2-2-0) within one at 4-3.

Welle then scored 38 seconds into the third and recorded his fifth goal 16 seconds later.

Johnny Rogalla's power-play goal with 13:15 remaining tied the score, setting the stage for Prokop's go-ahead goal.
