NORTHFIELD - Junior Jacob Peters, skating at top speed, fired a shot from near the goal line in the right corner past a sliding defender and underneath goaltender Nolan Wurm as Northfield outlasted Monticello 3-2 on Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, at the Northfield Ice Arena.
The game, one of four played around the state, featured two of the top programs in Class 1A. Monticello was No. 9 and Northfield No. 11 in the preseason rankings.
Northfield (2-0-0), a state tournament qualifier each of the past three seasons, got a standout performance from goaltender Gavin Winter, who made 38 stops, including a combined 17 in the third period and overtime.
Philip Benjamin and Wade Gilbertson scored second-period goals for Northfield. Ashton Still and Nicklas Nelson, a junior defenseman committed to UConn, scored for the Moose (0-1-0).
COTTAGE GROVE - Sophomore Michael Belde scored twice as Stillwater, the state Class 2A runner-up last season, cruised past Park 6-2 at the Cottage Grove Ice Arena.
Belde opened the scoring late in the first period, and his goal 4:23 into the second put the No. 14-2A Ponies (2-0-0) ahead 2-1. Belde's goal sparked a run of four-straight goals that ended early in the third period and put Stillwater ahead 6-1.
Tyson Miller and Teague McGlynn each had a goal and an assist for the Ponies.
Nick Bailey and Jack Kennedy scored for Park (0-2-1).
OAKDALE - Senior Tyler Pavel scored twice in the first period as he led Tartan to a 5-3 victory over Northern Edge at Tartan Arena.
Hunter Sanders and Riley Dufour scored back-to-back goals to open the scoring in the second period and pull Northern Edge (0-2-0) into a 2-2 tie.
Tartan (2-1-0) scored the next three goals, two of them shorthanded, and took a 5-2 lead on Joshua Markfort's goal midway through the third.
Gage Husby made 43 saves for Northern Edge and Nathan McGuire had 18 stops for Tartan.
ROSEVILLE - Roseville scored the first five goals, including a pair from junior Garrett Hites, as it rolled to an 8-3 victory over Chaska at the Roseville Ice Arena.
Hites completed his hat trick early in the third period, putting the Raiders (3-0-0) ahead 7-1. He is tied for second in the state in scoring with 11 points.
Jack Campbell scored twice for Chaska (0-2-1).
