Hockey Night: St. Michael-Albertville stuns Rogers

Nov. 22: Unranked Knights hold off No. 8-2A Royals; Top-ranked Moorhead overpowers Wayzata for another lopsided win

St. Michael-Albertville 3, Rogers 2

ROGERS - Wyatt Tupper's goal with 5:29 remaining held up as the winner as unranked St. Michael-Albertville knocked off Rogers 3-2 on Saturday at Rogers Ice Arena.

Rogers (1-1-0), ranked No. 8 in Class 2A and a state tournament qualifier last season, closed to within 3-2 on Brock Cheslock's goal with 4:18 remaining.

But Knights' goaltender Lucas Ingebritson, a senior, was impenetrable in the closing minutes. He finished with 39 saves. 

Braylen Maciej and Hunter Hansen scored first-goals for St. Michael-Albertville (1-0-0). Cole Bumgarner had a second-period power play goal for the Royals.

Moorhead 7, Wayzata 0

PLYMOUTH - Defending state Class 2A champion Moorhead had all its big guns firing in a 7-0 triumph over host Wayzata in the second round of the Wayzata Turkey Trot.

Star forwards Brandon Mickelson, Zac Zimmerman, Tyden Bergenson and Joey Cullen were among the goal scorers for the No. 1-2A Spuds (2-0-0).

Moorhead led 3-0 after the first and 6-0 through two period. The Spuds beat No. 5-2A Edina, a state Class 2A tournament semifinalist last season, 6-3 in its season opener on Friday. 

No. 9-2A Wayzata (0-2-0) was outshot 29-16.

Minnetonka 2, White Bear Lake 2 OT

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Nash Roed's power-play goal with 5:17 remaining in regulation lifted White Bear Lake into a 2-2 tie and that's how the back-and-forth game ended after a scoreless overtime period at the TCO Sports Garden.

Rian Marquardt's goal late in the first period was the only scoring until 6:30 into the third, when No. 3-2A Minnetonka's Tavin Dobchuk tied it at 1-1.  

Zach Markwell gave Minnetonka it's only lead, at 2-1, with a goal with 5:49 remaining. Roed scored his goal 32 seconds later.

Minnetonka's record stands at 1-0-1. The game was the season opener for No. 17-2A White Bear Lake.

Maple Grove 4, Edina 3 OT

PLYMOUTH - Cole Anderson scored 4:26 into overtime to give Maple Grove a 4-3 win in the second round of the Wayzata Turkey Trot at the Plymouth Ice Center.

The teams traded goals in the opening period as Nash Paine scored for No. 5-2A Edina (0-2-0) and Samuel Biederwolf answered for No. 11-2A Maple Grove (2-0-0).

After Dylan Donnay gave Edina a 2-1 lead after two periods, Biederwolf evened the score 5:05 into the third.

David Varecka gave Edina a 3-2 lead less than two minutes later only to see Maple Grove's Cale Braid tie the game again with 8:48 left in regulation.

Ryder Skanson made 28 saves for Maple Grove.

Delano 5, East Grand Forks 1

EAST GRAND FORKS - Fresh off a win over perennial power Warroad, Delano completed a successful road trip by scoring five straight goals in a 5-1 win over defending state Class 1A champion East Grand Forks.

The game, held at the East Grand Forks Civic Center, featured two teams ranked in Legacy's preseason Class 1A top five.

No. 4-1A East Grand Forks, playing in its season opener, started the scoring 2:47 into the first.

Connor Oja scored on the power play midway through the period to start the scoring run for No. 5-1A Delano (2-0-0).

Daniel Halonen scored a short-handed goal for the Tigers before Brady Kangas scored on the power play. Kangas, who assisted on Delano's other three goals, gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead with 1:24 left in the second.

Lance Halonen scored in the third for the final margin.

Lincoln Truax stopped 22 shots for the win.

Luverne 2, Little Falls 1 OT

LUVERNE - Blake Sauer scored on a two-man advantage to give Luverne a 2-1 overtime win over Little Falls at Blue Mound Ice Arena.

The No. 18-1A Cardinals (2-0-0) finished the game with 67 shots on goal, testing the mettle of standout Little Falls goaltender Izaak Kallis, who made 65 saves.

Remi Chisholm opened the scoring for No. 20-1A Little Falls in the second period before Mallachi Domagala scored on the power play for Luverne.

Little Falls (0-1-0) was called for a tripping and a cross-checking penalty in overtime to set the stage for Sauer's game-winning goal.

Bloomington Jefferson 3, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 2 OT

BLOOMINGTON - Brayden Thomas scored 64 seconds into overtime to lift Bloomington Jefferson to a 3-2 come-from-behind upset win over No. 13-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton at the Bloomington Ice Garden in the season opener for both teams.

Thomas, who scored the tying goal 7:15 into the third period, also assisted on the Jaguars' first goal.

Jordy Sewell and William Karjala each scored in the second for No. 13-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton, which led 2-1 after two periods.

Gentry Academy 7, Blake 4

HOPKINS - Gentry Academy scored three times in the opening 3:42 of the third period to pull away to a 7-4 upset win over No. 6-1A Blake at the Blake Ice Arena.

Overall, seven players recorded goals for the Stars in their season opener. Nate Wilke's goal 39 seconds into the third period was the game-winner.

Gentry led 2-1 after the first but Blake's Landon Bell scored two power-play goals and added an assist on another goal as the Bears (1-1-0) rallied for a 4-3 lead.

Blake Langer scored with 2:32 left in the second to even the score and set the stage for Gentry's third-period outburst.

Wilke added three assists to his scoring total.
