WARROAD - Backup goaltender Lincoln Truax didn't allow a goal while subbing for injured starter Evan Geyen as Delano secured what is believed to be its first win over Warroad, a 3-1 triumph on Friday at The Gardens Arena.
Truax, a junior, entered with 1:56 left in the second period and Delano leading 2-1. He finished with 19 saves, all in the third period. He was rushed by jubilant teammates as the final horn sounded, and unceremoniously knocked to the ice in the ensuing mayhem.
The game was the season opener for both teams. Warroad is ranked No. 2 and Delano No. 5 in Class 1A.
The teams have played each other frequently in recent years, and 12th year Delano coach Gerrit van Bergen, a former Delano player, said he believed it was the Tigers' first win over the Warriors.
Brody Geislinger scored a shorthanded empty net goal with 1:11 remaining and added two assists. Sam Hard scored the lone Warroad goal.
ST. PAUL - Hibbing/Chisholm showed why it is the consensus No. 1 team in Class 1A by beating Class 2A powerhouse Cretin-Derham Hall 6-3 at Highland Arena in the season opener for both teams.
Senior Tate Swanson scored twice and added an assist for the Bluejackets, who reached the semifinals of last season's state Class 1A tournament.
Swanson and Isaiah Hildenbrand each scored empty net goals in the final minute.
Jonny Bloedow scored twice for No. 12-2A Cretin-Derham Hall, one of the favorites in Section 3AA.

PLYMOUTH - Lane Glende scored twice for Maple Grove as it outlasted Wayzata 4-2 in the opening round of the Wayzata Turkey Trot tournament at the Plymouth Ice Center.
Glende, a senior in his third varsity season, scored midway through the opening period, and his goal late in the second put the No. 11-2A Crimson ahead 3-1.
McCoy Kurtz and Christopher Pyle scored for No. 9-2A Wayzata.
SARTELL - Sartell erupted for four third-period goals as the Sabres upset No. 20-2A Rock Ridge 7-3 at Scheels Athletic Complex.
Sartell had a 2-1 lead after the first period on goals by Kaden Peterlin and Caleb Thompson. A power-play goal by Devin Jacobs pushed the lead to 3-1 early in the second period.
Rock Ridge pulled within one on Landon Mathison's goal midway in the second.
Jacob scored two goals to go with an assist while Preston Deragisch added a goal and two assists.
THIEF RiVER FALLS - St. Cloud Cathedral scored the game's first four goals and didn't look back in a 6-3 win over Thief River Falls at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Bo Schmidt scored twice and added an assist for the No. 14-1A Crusaders, who have appeared in the last three state tournaments. Elijah Van Heel netted two goals and Brandan White recorded three assists.
Spencer Anderson scored two of Thief River Falls' goals.
ST. LOUIS PARK - Liam McCoy's second goal of the game capped a three-goal run and held up as the game winner as St. Louis Park defeated Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper 6-5 at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.
The teams traded goals in the first before McCoy gave the Orioles a 3-2 lead with 3:10 left in the period.
Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper took a 4-3 lead with goals by Brady Northrup and Tate Gladney before Leo Schmoll scored twice in three minutes to give St. Louis Park a 5-4 lead after two periods.
McCoy's second goal made it 6-4 before Jacob Swanson cut the lead to 6-5 midway through the third.
Tanner Cassidy scored a pair of power-play goals for Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper.
LE SUEUR - Logan Hill scored 11 seconds into overtime as Westonka recorded a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Minnesota River at the Le Sueur Community Center.
Liam Grant opened the scoring for the White Hawks in the first period. Minnesota River's Ethan Moreau evened the score with 5:33 left in the first.
Riley Kamm gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead midway through the second. Grant's second goal came 38 seconds into the third period to eventually send the game to overtime.
