Hockey Night: Rogers eases past Andover

Nov. 20: Royals open season in impressive fashion; Stillwater wins thriller; STA, Duluth Marshall romp to wins

Rogers 7, Andover 1

ANDOVER - Senior forward Avenir Belous scored twice as part of a four-point effort and Rogers scored the first five goals en route to a 7-1 win over Andover on Thursday at the Andover Community Center as the boys' high school hockey season opened with 20 games.

Hudson Kottke, Cole Bumgarner and Belous scored in the first 6:10 of the second period as No. 8-2A Rogers built a 5-0 lead. Belous and Bumgarner, a fellow senior, each added two assists for the Royals, who reached the state tournament for the first time last season. 

Cam Langfeld scored the lone goal for No. 10-2A Andover.

Rogers outshot Andover 27-16.

Stillwater 3, Centennial 2 OT

CIRCLE PINES - Senior forward Luca Frascone scored 1:15 into overtime to lift Stillwater, which reached the state Class 2A title game last season, to a 3-2 win over Centennial at the Centennial Sports Arena.

Gavin Cunningham pulled Centennial into a 2-2 tie with 4:48 left in regulation. A senior who entered the season with a combined 14 career goals as a sophomore and junior, Cunningham also scored a first-period goal for the Cougars.

Tyson Miller and Tate Batchelor scored third-period goals for the No. 14-2A Ponies.

St. Thomas Academy 12, Tartan 0

OAKDALE - Senior Cole Braunshausen scored three consecutive goals in the second period as St. Thomas Academy steamrolled Tartan 12-0 at Tartan Arena.

Braunshausen finished with four goals and an assist and Maverick McKinnon, a freshman, had two goals and five assists for the No. 4-2A Cadets. Will Mikan also had a five-point night.

The forward trio of Braunshausen, McKinnon and Mikan accounted for seven goals and combined for 17 points. McKinnon scored 22 goals and added 28 assists last season as an eighth-grader at Forest Lake.

Duluth Marshall 10, Duluth Denfeld 2

DULUTH - Benson Peterson, a senior who scored a combined 37 goals as a sophomore and junior, opened the season with a four-goal performance as Duluth Marshall cruised past intracity rival Duluth Denfeld at the Essentia Duluth Heritage Center.

Duluth Denfeld took a 2-0 lead just 4:05 into the opening period, but it was all Duluth Marshall from there. The Hilltoppers scored twice in the first to tie it, then scored four goals in each of the second and third periods.

Sam Berry had seven assists and Peterson was the only Duluth Marshall player to score more than a single goal.

New Prague 6, Mankato East 5 OT

MANKATO - Walker Andersen's third goal of the night, a power-play tally, came with 4:39 remaining in overtime to lift New Prague to a 6-5 win over Mankato East at All Seasons Arena.

Andersen's first two goals came in the third period to tie the contest 4-4.

Mankato East's Zacharia Lang scored to give the Cougars a 5-4 lead with 5:15 left in regulation but the Trojans' Carson Ashley scored with 1:22 remaining to force overtime.

Rochester Century/John Marshall 3, Two Rivers 2 OT

WEST ST. PAUL - Bennett Timpane scored with 4:23 left in overtime as Rochester Century/John Marshall recorded a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Two Rivers at the West St. Paul Arena.

Two Rivers' Luke Leitner scored in the first and second periods to give the Warriors the lead. However, Rochester Century/John Marshall's Boston Collins scored twice to force overtime. Collins' second goal came with 1:01 remaining in regulation.

Park 4, Eagan 4 OT

EAGAN - Park of Cottage Grove scored the game's final three goals as it battled to a 4-4 overtime tie with Eagan at the Eagan Civic Arena.

Park opened the scoring with Chase Nadler's power-play goal in the first period. Eagan's Nathan Turvold scored the first of his two goals to tie the game 1-1 after the first.

The Wildcats then opened the second period with goals from Charlie Forester, Andrew Voelbel and Turvold for a 4-1 lead.

Nick Bailey and Owen Mordorski scored 103 seconds apart in the period's final four minutes to cut Eagan's lead to 4-3.

Riley Koch scored with 1:59 remaining in regulation to force overtime. Each time recorded five shots on goal in the extra session.

Luverne 3, Rochester Lourdes 2

LUVERNE - Jaxon Lais' goal with 10:44 remaining held up as the game winner as Luverne hung on for a 3-2 win over Rochester Lourdes in a matchup of ranked teams at Blue Mound Ice Arena.

The No. 18-1A Cardinals, who qualified for the 2025 state tournament, opened a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Benjamin Hartquist.

Jack Phillips scored in the first to bring No. 19-1A Rochester Lourdes within one, 2-1.

A scoreless second period took place before Lais' goal. Gavin Groettum scored on the power play with 6:30 remaining but the Eagles were unable to score again.

Luverne's Gavin Hoeven made 44 saves on the night, 17 alone in the third period.
