ST. PAUL - Moorhead's Mason Kraft was named the winner of the Mr. Hockey Award on Sunday at the St. Paul RiverCentre.

Sunday’s other big winner was Leo Gabriel of White Bear Lake, the recipient of the Frank Brimsek Award that goes to the state’s top senior goaltender.

The Mr. Hockey Award, given to the state’s top senior skater, started in 1985 and the Frank Brimsek Award in 1995.

Kraft led Moorhead to the program's first state Class 2A championship in nine title-game appearances, scoring a tournament-best nine goals. He scored 45 goals and added 49 assists in 31 games to lead the Spuds in scoring. His 94 points were the second most in the state.

Kraft scored four goals in first period of the state championship game against Stillwater, tying a tournament record for most goals in a period with Tourney icon John Mayasich of Eveleth.

Kraft was the leading scorer in the tournament with 11 points. His father, Ryan, led Class 2A in scoring with nine points in 1994.

Moorhead, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 2A for much of the second half of the season, went 28-2-1.

The other finalists for the Mr. Hockey Award, as announced by the Minnesota All Sports Alliance, were Nolen Geerdes of Rogers,  John Hirschfeld of St. Cloud Cathedral, Mason Jenson of Rogers, Henry Lechner of Holy Angels, Jackson Rudh of St. Thomas Academy, Boden Sampair of Hill-Murray, Cooper Simpson of Shakopee, Brent Solomon of Champlin Park and Josh Toll of Rosemount. Geerdes and Toll were the lone defensemen on the list.

Gabriel helped lead White Bear Lake to an appearance in the Class 4AA semifinals. He went 14-8-3 with a 1.73 goals-against average and .928 save percentage and five shutouts. Gabriel is the third goaltender from White Bear Lake to win the award. Eric Aarnio was selected as the state's top senior goalie in 2001 and Jon Anderson won the Brimsek in 2003.

Luke Marsalek of Holy Angels and Charlie Stenehjem of Moorhead were the other finalists for the award.

Nolen Geerdes of Rogers won the Reed Larson Award that goes to the state's top senior defenseman.
