ST. PAUL — No. 5 seed Edina raced to an early three-goal lead then hung on to beat No. 3 seed St. Thomas Academy 4-3 on Saturday in the state Class 2A third place game at the Xcel Energy Center.
Freddie Schnieder and Mason West scored for the Hornets (22-7-2) in the first period and Becker Wenkes made it 3-0 just 30 seconds into the second.
After the teams traded goals, Nico Russ and Michael Mikan scored in the closing minutes to pull St. Thomas Academy (24-6-0) to within 4-3. Mikan’s goal came with 50 seconds left.
West, a junior forward and Edina's leading scorer with 49 points, and also had an assist to finish the tournament with five points. Casey Vandertop added two assists for the Hornets, last season’s state champion, and also finished with 49 points.
Chase Bjorgaard made 36 saves for Edina; Cody Niesen had 31 for St. Thomas Academy.
MINNEAPOLIS — Junior goaltender Owen Lunnenborg made 20 saves for his fifth shutout of the season as No. 6 seed Shakopee beat No. 8 seed Lakeville South 4-0 in the state Class 2A tournament consolation championship at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Peyton Chase had a goal and an assist for the Sabers (24-6-1) who scored two goals in each of the first and second periods.
Nate Pederson and Cooper Simpson, a Mr. Hockey finalist, scored the first-period goals for Shakopee. Ben Box and Chase scored in the second. Simpson finished with six points in the tournament, tied for the most in the Class 2A field before the start of the big-school championship game.
Carson Hauger made 27 saves for Lakeville South (19-11-0) before giving way to Logan Klaren in the third. Klaren had four saves.
