Orono, Northfield finish season with wins

Hibbing/Chisholm 5, Orono 1

ST. PAUL - Rory Kvern and Luca Decubellis each had a goal and an assist as No. 6 seed Orono beat No. 1 seed Hibbing/Chisholm 5-1 on Saturday in the state Class 1A third place game at the Xcel Energy Center.

Orono (17-11-13) led 2-0 after the second period and went up 3-0 just 2:12 into the third on a power-play goal by Kvern, a junior forward. Hibbing/Chisholm (20-11-0) answered just 15 seconds later, closing to within 3-1 on a goal by Blake Riccio.

Decubellis and Trey Landa scored later in the third as the Spartans, making their third-straight state tournament appearance, pulled away.

Ethan Pagel had two assists for Orono and, along with Kvern, is part of a four-way tie for the Class 1A tournament scoring lead at six points.

Orono goaltender Evan Schmidt made 23 saves on 24 shots before giving way to Max Lewin in the closing minutes. Lewin stopped all four shots he faced. Rex Walli made 18 saves for the Blue Jackets before giving way to Gavin Lamphere.

Consolation Championship

Northfield 4 Northern Lakes 0

MINNEAPOLIS - Gavin Winter made 26 saves for the shutout as No. 3 seed Northfield beat No. 5 seed Northern Lakes 4-0 in the state Class 1A consolation championship at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

The shutout was the fifth of the season for Winter, a junior who finished with an 8-0-1 record.

Sophomore defenseman Ben Geiger had a goal and two assists for the Raiders (24-5-2), who won 10 of their final 12 games to close the season.

Northern Lakes (20-10-1), shut out for the second time in three tournament games, got 21 saves from sophomore Sam Suja.
