ST. PAUL — Cole Bies scored twice in the opening minute of the third period as No. 4 seed East Grand Forks rallied to knock off No. 1 seed Hibbing/Chisholm 7-5 on Friday in a state Class 1A semifinal at the Xcel Energy Center.

East Grand Forks (15-13-2) trailed 3-1 after the first period and 5-2 midway through the second. The Green Wave scored the final five goals, two in the second and three more in the third.

Hunter Varson started the comeback by scoring with 1:54 left in the second. Judd Pesch scored with 1 second left in the period to cut Hibbing/Chisholm’s lead to 5-4.

Bies, a senior defenseman, scored 11 seconds into the third period and again 39 seconds later to make it 6-5. The four goals spanning the two periods came in 2:44. Bies’ two goals were his sixth and seventh of the season.

Jace Panzer added an empty-net goal with 25 seconds remaining. 

Tate Swanson, Benny Galli and Cole Swanson scored in the first period for Hibbing/Chisholm (20-10-0). Whitaker Rewertz and Isaiah Hildenbrand scored in the second for the Blue Jackets. Hildenbrand’s goal with 7:18 left in the second gave Hibbing/Chisholm its 5-2 lead.

Noah Schindele made 22 saves for East Grand Forks. Rex Walli had 28 stops for the Blue Jackets.
