ST. PAUL - Mr. Hockey finalist Mason Kraft had four goals and added an assist as top-seeded Moorhead rallied to beat No. 8 Lakeville South 7-4 in a state Class 2A quarterfinal Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center.
The Cougars held leads of 3-1 and 4-2 before the Spuds started their comeback.
Kraft's second of the game at the 10:24 mark of the second period made it 4-3 game and Tyden Bergeson pulled Moorhead even just 57 seconds later.
Third period goals by Brooks Cullen and Kraft put the game out of reach.
Will Kortan scored twice for Lakeville South (18-10-0), while brothers Jackson and Carter Ernst each tallied single goals.
Frank Brimsek Award finalist Charlie Stenehjem made 24 saves for Moorhead (26-2-1). Carson Hauger finished with 20 stops for the Cougars.
The victory sends the No. 1-seeded Spuds to the state Class 2A semifinals Friday night where they'll battle the winner of Rogers and Edina at 8 p.m.
Mason Kraft completed his hat trick with 4:40 remaining, putting the Spuds ahead 6-4 in a game brimming with momentum swings. A perfect pass from a spinning Tyden Bergeson set up the goal. Kraft scored his fourth of the game and 41st of the season into an empty net in the closing seconds.
