Quick Recap

ST. PAUL - Brothers Tate and Cole Swanson combined for six points as No. 1 seed Hibbing/Chisholm cruised to a 7-0 victory over No. 8 seed Luverne on Wednesday in a Class 1A quarterfinal at the Xcel Energy Center.

Tate Swanson, a junior, scored twice and Cole Swanson, a freshman, added a goal. They assisted on each of the other’s goals, fueling the Blue Jackets’ victory.

Hibbing/Chisholm, ranked No. 3 in Class 1A, led 4-0 after the opening period and 6-0 after the second. Tate Swanson scored the opening goal 1:20 into the first period and put the Blue Jackets (19-9-0) ahead 5-0 less than 2 minutes into the second. Cole Swanson chimed in with a power-play goal with 2:24 left in the second.

Tate Swanson extended his consecutive game scoring streak to 20 — he’s been held without a point once all season.

Hibbing/Chisholm starting goaltender Rex Walli made 15 saves before giving way to Gavin Lamphere midway through the third period. Lamphere did his best work in the closing minutes, when he stopped Luverne’s Blaik Bjork on a breakaway and turned away several more close-range Cardinals shots.

Gavin Hoven made 31 saves for Luverne.

The victory was the eighth straight for Hibbing/Chisholm, which went 2-5-0 before embarking on its current win streak.

No. 16-1A Luverne (22-5-2), making its fourth state tournament appearance, has never advanced to the semifinal round.

Key Moment

Hunter Gustavsson’s goal 2:53 into the first period put Hibbing/Chisholm ahead 2-0 and Luverne squarely on its heels.

By the Numbers

1: Game this season in which Hibbing/Chisholm’s Tate Swanson has been held off the scoresheet. He’s scored at least a point in 20 straight games.
2: State championships for Hibbing — both in the one-class era (1952, 1973).
0: Times Luverne has advanced to the state Class 1A semifinals in four tries.
7: Luverne players with double-digit goals.

They Said It

I’m still kind of in shock that we are here.
