MAPLEWOOD - It took a while, but Matthew Volkman completed his hat trick in a most dramatic fashion, scoring 59 seconds into double overtime to lift No. 2 seed Stillwater to a 4-3 victory over No. 1 seed Hill-Murray on Friday in the Section 4AA championship game at Aldrich Arena.
Volkman, on a rush with Trey Fredenberg into the Hill-Murray defensive zone, elected to shoot and whistled a high shot over the shoulder of Pioneers goaltender Grayson Hanggi to end it.
The victory sends Stillwater (22-6-0), ranked No. 4 in Class 2A, to the state tournament for the third time and first since 2016.
The goals were the 24th, 25th and 26th of the season for Volkman, a senior forward. He has six goals in three playoff games.
No. 1-ranked Hill-Murray (24-3-1) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to start the third period on late goals from Mr. Hockey finalist Boden Sampair, his second of the game, and Graham Greeder. The power-play goal by Greeder tied it at 3-3 with 2:15 remaining.
Cal Conway made 37 saves for Stillwater; Hanggi had 29 stops for Hill-Murray.
Hill-Murray beat Stillwater 3-1 on Jan. 25 in the teams' lone regular season meeting.
