CHASKA - Chaska's Tyler Nesheim made an astounding 80 saves, believed to be the second most in state history in a regulation game, in a losing effort as Prior Lake beat the Hawks 6-1 at the Chaska Community Center.
The Minnesota State High School league list's the most stops in a regulation game as 76, a feat shared by River Lakes' Spencer Theis (2008) and Moose Lake's Gage Mohelsky (2012).
The MSHSL list does not include the 98 saves made by Tony Bruns of Morris/Benson in a Nov. 26, 2016 game at Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato. Alex Darsow of Becker/Big Lake made 102 saves in a triple-overtime playoff game against River Lakes in 2011.
Nesheim, a senior, entered with six games of 60 or more saves, including a high of 67 on Dec. 14 at Minnetonka.
After spotting Chaska a first-period goal, Prior Lake scored six times in the second period's first seven minutes.
Donovan Madsen scored in the first period for Chaska (3-20-2).
Prior Lake's Gavin Lind scored 2:20 into the second to tie the score at 1-1. The Lakers (11-12-2) then scored five power-play goals - four coming on a major penalty - to pull away for the win.
Aiden Lavigne scored two power-play goals and Lind added one. Levi Eiter had a goal and three assists.
ST. PAUL - Max Anderson scored in the third period and overtime to lead Cretin-Derham Hall past Suburban East Conference rival White Bear Lake 2-1 at Highland Arena.
Anderson scored 1:58 into overtime to give the No. 7-2A Raiders (21-3-1) a sweep of their season series against the No. 14-2A Bears (15-7-3). Cretin-Derham Hall beat White Bear Lake by the same 2-1 score on Jan. 18.
White Bear Lake's Leo Gabriel and Cretin-Derham Hall's Owen Nelson were standouts in goal, keeping the game scoreless until the third period. Gabriel had 19 saves and Nelson 26.
ST. CLOUD - Griffin Sturm scored the game's last three goals to power St. Cloud Cathedral's 4-3 comeback win over Mahtomedi in overtime in a matchup of ranked teams at the Municipal Athletic Complex.
Sturm, a junior, now has 13 goals for No. 5-1A St. Cloud Cathedral (15-8-2).
His goals came shorthanded and via the power play in the third period and the game winner was an even-strength goal.
No. 15-1A Mahtomedi (8-15-2) led 2-1 after the first period after goals by Blake Loida and Brayden Fuerst. The Zephyrs led 3-1 on Brock Gutterman's goal midway through the second.
BRAINERD - Axton Peterson's goal with 3:59 remaining in the second overtime gave Brainerd a 3-2 win over St. Cloud in the first round of the Section 8AA Playoffs at the Essential Health Sports Center.
Jackson Stuber gave the Crush the early lead before Brainerd (5-20-1) tied the scored on Zander Peterson's goal.
Richy Pyle then gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead in the second only to see Max Kiffmeyer tie the game for St. Cloud (5-20-1) 6:17 into the third period.
EDEN PRAIRIE - Edina and Eden Prairie traded goals in both the second and third periods as the ranked teams skated to a 2-2 tie at the Eden Prairie Community Center.
After Sam Peckham's power-play goal gave No. 5-2A Edina a 1-0 lead early in the second period, the Eagles (16-6-3) answered with John Kleis' goal.
Casey Mason gave the Hornets (17-6-2) a 2-1 lead only to see No. 13-2A Eden Prairie tie the game again when Alex Hall scored with 6:04 left in regulation.
Bennett Wilmer made 27 saves for Eden Prairie while Chase Bjorgaard stopped 23 shots for Edina.
CHAMPLIN - Brody Holoien's power-play goal with 6:39 remaining was the game-winner as Champlin Park rallied to beat Orono 3-2 at the Champlin Ice Forum.
No. 12-1A Orono (12-10-30 led 2-0 after the first period on goals from Ryan De Lange and Ethan Pagel.
Champlin Park (16-9-0) rallied to tie it at 2-2 in through the second on goals from Brent Solomon and Carson Anderson. Solomon's goal was his 34th of the season, tied for eighth most in the state.
Evan Schmidt made 32 saves for Orono; Cameron Dreifke had 22 stops for Champlin Park.
CROSBY - Gavin Andersen scored twice as No. 1-1A Warroad defeated No. 8-1A Northern Lakes 5-3 at the Hallett Community Center.
Ryan Shaugabay recorded a goal and three assists for Warroad (18-6-1).
Jacob Peterson, Drew Paulbeck and Jerome Martin scored for Northern Lakes (16-8-1).
MINNETONKA - Trey Cook's first-period goal held up as the game winner while Ben Ferguson made 20 saves as Minnetonka defeated Wayzata 2-0 in a matchup of ranked teams at the Pagel Activity Center.
Gavin Karl scored in the third period for No. 15-2A Minnetonka (13-10-2).
Ryan Pellinger made 19 saves for No. 12-2A Wayzata (14-8-3).
ST. PAUL - Rafa Bastida-Rickmyer scored on a breakaway with 1:24 left in overtime to boost St. Paul Johnson past St. Paul Academy 5-4 at Gustafson-Phalen Ice Arena.
The goal was Bastida-Rickmyer's third of the game and 40th of the season, tied for fourth most in the state.
St. Paul Academy (8-17-0) led 3-1 after the opening period. St. Paul Johnson (9-13-2) answered in the second with goals from Bastida-Rickmyer and Isaiah Henderson to tie it at 3-3.
The teams traded third-period goals, forcing the overtime session.
