Hockey Night: Hill-Murray holds off Rogers

Feb. 8: Edina stages mighty rally, ties Wayzata; Maple Grove knocked off STA; Shakopee too much for Rosemount

Hill-Murray 4, Rogers 3

MAPLEWOOD - Riley Zupfer scored twice for Hill-Murray, and the Pioneers built a three-goal lead by the midpoint of the game before surviving a late Rogers rally for a 4-3 victory on Saturday at Aldrich Arena.

Zupfer's goal 7:24 into the second period put the No. 4-2A Pioneers (20-2-1) ahead 3-0, and his goal with 5:42 left made it 4-1.

No. 3-2A Rogers (19-3-1) scored three of the final four goals, including two in the final 2:20. Nolen Geerdes and Jayden Kurtz scored the late goals for the Royals, who have lost two straight after a 17-game unbeaten streak.

Kurtz's goal came with 19 seconds left.

Hill-Murray outshot Rogers 42-34.

Edina 4, Wayzata 4 OT

EDINA - Edina scored three goals in the final 97 seconds, including two with goaltender Wyatt Spindler pulled in favor of an extra skater, as it rallied to forge a 4-4 overtime tie with Lake Conference and Section 6AA rival Wayzata.

Casey Vandertop's goal with 14 seconds left in regulation completed the comeback.

Torii Schmidt and Christopher Pyle scored third-period goals for No 14-2A Wayzata (13-7-2). Pyle's goal came with 7:28, put the Trojans ahead 4-1 and sparked an exodus of fans to the exits.

Alex White started the comeback with his power-play goal with 1:37 left in the third. Bode McConnell scored with 1:10 left in reglationto cut the Hornets' lead to 4-3.

Wayzata beat Edina 4-3 in overtime on Jan. 15 in the teams' previous meeting.

Maple Grove 7, St. Thomas Academy 4

MENDOTA HEIGHTS - Maple Grove scored five-straight goals over two periods as the Crimson picked up a 7-4 upset win over St. Thomas Academy in a matchup of ranked teams at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.

The teams traded goals in the first before William Dosan and Max Candon gave No. 2-2A St. Thomas Academy (19-4-0) a 3-1 lead midway through the second. 

No. 19-2A Maple Grove scored twice in two minutes to even the score. Brady Aubut then gave the Crimson (14-8-1) the lead 1:33 into the third. He also scored 63 seconds later.

Zach Schindel sandwiched his two goals around a Cadets' goal by Bennett Knutson for the final score.

St. Thomas Academy outshot Maple Grove 29-24.

Shakopee 6, Rosemount 2

SHAKOPEE - Nate Pederson scored twice in the second period as Shakopee scored three times in that period to record a 6-2 win over Rosemount in a matchup of ranked teams at the Shakopee Ice Arena.

Shakopee also defeated its South Suburban Conference rival on Jan. 7.

Cooper Simpson gave No. 12-2A Shakopee a 1-0 lead but Rosemount (20-3-0) tied the score on Channing Goodwin's goal in the first.

Pederson scored the first of his goals on a power play 5:08 into the second. Simpson scored two minutes later and then Pederson scored two minutes after that goal to give the Sabers (17-5-1) a 4-1 lead.

No. 7-2A Rosemount scored a power-play goal by Christian Garrity in the second period's final minute only two see Cody Sawyer score twice in the third period to ice the win for Shakopee.

Blake 5, Waseca 2

HOPKINS - A four-goal outburst in the second period carried Blake to a 5-2 win over No. 17-1A Waseca at the Blake Ice Arena.

Waseca (17-3-2) led 1-0 after Henry Huttemier's first period goal. The Bears scored three goals in three minutes in the second period before Kellen Matushak netted his second goal of the period with 32 seconds remaining.

After Hunter Anderson scored for the Bluejays, Matushak completed his first hat trick of the season by scoring an insurance goal with 4:52 remaining. Blake has won eight of its last nine games to improve to 17-6-0.

Roseau 4, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 3 OT

ROSEAU - Austin Klint's power-play goal 2:16 into overtime gave Roseau a 4-3 comeback win over Cloquet/Esko/Carlson at Roseau Memorial Arena.

No. 1-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton, which suffered its second loss in as many nights, led 3-2 after two periods. Warroad defeated the Lumberjacks 4-0 Friday.

The teams traded goals in the first before Nikolas Gentilini gave the Lumberjacks (18-6-0) a 2-1 lead. Roseau's Isaac Baumgartner tied the score midway in the second before Conor Sullivan gave Cloquet/Esko/Carlton the 3-2 lead with four seconds left in the second.

Abram Waage tied the game 3:30 into the third for the Rams (12-10-2).

Two Rivers 4, Anoka 3 OT

WEST ST. PAUL - Freshman Luke Christopherson's goal with 1:48 left in overtime gave Two Rivers a 4-3 comeback win over Anoka at the West St. Paul Arena.

Christopherson scored 5:13 into the game, which saw Two Rivers take a 2-0 lead after the first period. Christopherson, who picked up his first hat trick of the season, and Eddie Auran scored in the first for the Warriors (17-3-2).

Anoka (6-17-1) rallied in the second to take a 3-2 lead. Brady Roof scored 34 seconds into the period before Joshua Ryther evened the score 99 seconds later. Landon Lafferty gave the Tornadoes a 3-2 with 1:23 remaining in the second.

Cohen Kuehne made 48 saves for Anoka.

Benilde-St. Margaret's 4, Grand Rapids 2

GRAND RAPIDS - Mason Minor scored twice in the third period to lift Benilde-St. Margaret's to a 4-2 win over Grand Rapids in a matchup of ranked teams at Yanmar Arena.

Minor, a junior defenseman, gave the No. 10-2A Red Knights a 1-0 lead when he scored 3:05 into the contest. Cam Kirschner scored on the power play to make it 2-0 but Alexander Salisbury's power-play goal with 14 seconds remaining in the first cut it to 2-1.

No. 17-2A Thunderhawks (15-8-1) tied the score on Seth Carlson's power-play goal 2:11 into the second.

Minor, who recorded his first hat trick of the season, then gave Benilde-St. Margaret's (18-5-0) the lead 2:11 into the third before his shorthanded goal with 54 seconds remaining iced the win.

Minneapolis 10, Bloomington Kennedy 2

BLOOMINGTON - Minneapolis scored nine-straight goals to blow open a tie game and register a 10-2 win over Bloomington Kennedy at the Bloomington Ice Garden in the final home game for the Eagles' program.

Bloomington Kennedy, suffering from a shortage of players, is folding its program at the end of the season. The Eagles (1-21-0), won the 1987 state championship and made six other state tournament appearances starting in 1966 through 1991.

Nine players recorded goals for No. 8-1A Minneapolis (15-6-3), which outshot the Eagles 52-7.

After the game Kennedy players skated one final lap and posed for a group photo as they took their time leaving the ice.
