Hockey Night: Andover continues hot streak with win over Grand Rapids

Feb. 1: K.J. Sauer scores two clutch goals for Huskies; Stillwater gets big won over section rival White Bear Lake; Cloquet outlasts Minneapolis

Andover 4, Grand Rapids 2

ANDOVER - K.J. Sauer scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and added an empty netter to clinch it with 47 seconds left in the third as Andover upended Grand Rapids 4-2 at the Andover Community Center in a matchup that could have a big impact on the upcoming Section 7AA playoff seedings.

Camden Langfeld had a goal and two assists and goaltender Cash Cruitt mad 23 saves for unranked Andover (10-11-0), which has won six straight and eight of its last nine.

Caleb Gunderson and Luka Rohloff scored for No. 14-2A Grand Rapids (14-7-1), which has suffered five of its losses on trips to the Twin Cities area.

Grand Rapids, Rock Ridge and Andover - in some order -  figure to be at the top of the Section 7AA seeding. Grand Rapids and Rock Ridge tied 4-4 in their only meeting; Rock Ridge and Andover do not meet in the regular season.

Stillwater 5, White Bear Lake 4

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Matthew Volkman and Blake Vanek each had a goal and an assist as Stillwater, which three times built two-goal leads, held on to beat White Bear Lake 5-4 at the TCO Sports Garden in a game that could determine the No. 2 seed in the Section 4AA playoffs.

No. 9-2A Stillwater (17-4-0) held leads of 2-0, 4-2 and 5-3. Nash Roed's goal with 1:15 left pulled No. 8-2A White Bear Lake (13-4-3) to within 5-4.

Blake Eckerle scored twice and Will Distad had four assists for White Bear Lake, which beat Stillwater 3-1 on Dec. 31 in the teams' previous meeting.

Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 6, Minneapolis 5 OT

CLOQUET - Cloquet/Esko/Carlton twice rallied from two-goal deficits as it beat Minneapolis 6-5 in overtime at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center on Grady Knutson's second goal of the game.

Knutson scored 5:43 into the overtime period. 

No. 9-1A Minneapolis (13-5-3) led 2-0 in the first period and 4-2 in the third, but No. 2-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (18-4-0) responded with a flurry of goals each time. 

Consecutive goals by Knutson, Karson Young and Bobby Thornton (shorthanded) through parts of the second and third periods put the Lumberjacks ahead 5-4 with 10:18 left in the third period. 

Minneapolis' Eli Milinkovich scored a power-play goal with 3:53 left in regulation to tie it at 5-5.

The Lumberjacks have played in five overtime games this season, wining three of them and losing the other two.

Hill-Murray 3, Edina 2 OT

EDINA - Junior forward Chaz Lentz scored 5:45 into overtime to lift Hill-Murray to a 3-2 overtime victory over Edina at Braemar Arena in the second of a two-night, home-and-home series.

Lentz pounced on a loose puck in the slot and fired a rising shot past Wyatt Spindler to give the No. 4-2A Pioneers (17-2-1) a split in the weekend series. Edina won 3-2 on Friday night.

Edina rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second period on goals from Brady Peterson and Caleb Pittsley to tie it at 2-2.

Hill-Murray's Brady Morrell scored the lone goal of the first period and Graham Greeder's power-play goal 6:50 into the second period put the Pioneers ahead 2-0.

Grayson Hanggi made 33 saves for Hill-Murray; Wyatt Spindler stopped 33 shots for Edina, the defending state Class 2A champion.

Benilde-St. Margaret's 4, St. Louis Park 3

ST. LOUIS PARK - No. 11-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's overcame a three-goal, first-period deficit by scoring the game's final four goals in a 4-3 win over St. Louis Park at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Owen Anklam, Jack Betzer and Tyler Hess scored in the first period for St. Louis Park (14-7-0), giving the Orioles the 3-0 lead.

The Red Knights (15-5-0) started their comeback when Cam Kirschner scored on a power play, 1:43 into the second. Junior Podein scored 39 seconds later before Keegan Davis tied the game with 3:12 left in the second.

Kirschner completed the comeback by scoring 3:11 into the third. Podein (18), Davis (15) and Kirschner (12) are the top goal scorers for the Red Knights.

The Orioles appeared to have tied the game with 56.6 seconds to play but the referees waved off the goal.

Christopher Dean entered the game in the second period and stopped all 14 shots faced for Benilde-St. Margaret's.

Totino-Grace 4, Champlin Park 2

CHAMPLIN - Totino-Grace's Tre Peck scored the game's last three goals as the Eagles picked up a 4-2 win over Champlin Park at the Champlin Ice Forum.

The teams traded goals in the first period before Champlin Park (12-8-0) took the lead on Luke Carlson's goal. The Eagles (11-7-1) then struck twice on the power play, highlighted by Peck's go-ahead goal coming with one second remaining in the second.

Peck completed his hat trick on an empty-net goal with 36 seconds to play.

Gentry Academy 3, Blaine 2

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Colin Ruotsinoja's goal with 3:05 left to play gave Gentry Academy a 3-2 win over Blaine at the TCO Sports Garden.

After a scoreless first period, Gentry's Jacob Guille opened the scoring before Blaine (12-8-0) took a 2-1 lead on goals by Franklin Loo and Caleb Schwark.

Ryland Rooney brought the Stars (14-7-0) into a 2-2 tie when he scored 21 seconds into the third period, setting the stage for Ruotsinoja's game winner.

St. Cloud Cathedral 3, Detroit Lakes 0

DETROIT LAKES - John Hirschfeld recorded a goal and two assists while Keaton Legrande recorded his second shutout as St. Cloud Cathedral recorded a 3-0 win over Detroit Lakes between teams ranked in Class 1-A's top 20 at Freeman Sports Arena.

Hirschfeld's goal came as an insurance goal in the third. He had the first assist on Connor Stockman's first-period goal. Griffin Sturm picked up a second-period, power-play goal.

No. 5-1A Cathedral (13-7-2) has won four-straight games.

Griffin Lindberg made 37 saves for No. 17-1A Detroit Lakes (8-11-2).

Northern Lakes 3, Luverne 0

CROSBY - Easton Anderson scored in the first period and Sam Suja recorded his seventh shutout of the season as Northern Lakes defeated Luverne 3-0 in a matchup of ranked teams at Hallett Community Center.

Suja made 20 saves for No. 16-1A Northern Lakes (14-7-0), which also got third-period goals from Griffen Hannah and Drew Paulbeck.

Gavin Hoven stopped 34 of 37 shots for No. 14-1A Luverne (16-4-1). The Cardinals have lost two straight games after winning nine straight.
