Hockey Night: Mason West's OT goal lifts Edina past Hill-Murray

Jan. 31: No. 5 Hornets outlast No. 4 Pioneers; Delano rallies to tie SW Christian; Moorhead wins No. 1 vs. No. 1 showdown

Edina 3, Hill-Murray 2 OT

MAPLEWOOD - Mason West scored 4:27 into overtime as Edina beat Hill-Murray on Friday at Aldrich Arena in the first game of the teams' annual home-and-home series played on consecutive nights.

West deflected Robbie Hoch's point shot past Hill-Murray goaltender Grayson Hanggi to give the Hornets the victory. The goal was West's second of the game and team-leading 21st of the season. He also scored with 2:17 left in the second period to tie the score at 1-1.

Edina's Bode McConnell and Hill-Murray's Riley Zupfer traded third-period goals. Zupfer scored with 2:33 left in regulation to tie it at 2-2.

No. 5-2A Edina improved to 15-5-0 with the victory. No. 4-2A Hill-Murray dropped to 17-2-1. The teams meet again at 8 p.m. Saturday at Braemar Arena.

Delano 3, Southwest Christian/Richfield 3 OT

CHASKA - Delano scored the final three goals, including two in the final 2:02, as it rallied from a three-goal deficit to tie Southwest Christian/Richfield 3-3 in overtime at the Chaska Community Center.

Joseph McCabe's goal with 39 seconds left tied the score at 3-3. Bryce Peterson scored with 2:02 left in regulation to pull No. 10-1A Delano (9-10-1) to within 3-1.

Paul Horner, Dylan Trebil and Bennet Breuer scored in the first period as Southwest Christian/Richfield (7-10-2) surged to a 3-0 lead.

Moorhead 2, Hermantown 1

HERMANTOWN - Junior defenseman Brady Steffen's goal 7:15 into the third period held up as the winner as Moorhead beat Hermantown 2-1 at Hermantown Arena in a matchup of the No. 1-ranked teams in Class 2A and 1A.

Mason Kraft scored the lone goal of the first period, putting No. 1-2A Moorhead (21-1-0) ahead 1-0. No. 1-1A Hermantown (13-7-3) tied it 1-1 heading into the third on Charlie Marchand's goal in the second period. 

Steffen's goal was just his second of the season.

St. Thomas Academy 8, Mahtomedi 0

STILLWATER - Cody Niesen made 21 saves for his sixth shutout of the season and and William Dosan scored twice and added an assist as St. Thomas Academy beat Mahtomedi 8-0 at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

Dosan opened the scoring in the first period and scored with 5:52 left in the second to put the No. 2-2A Cadets ahead 4-0 The goals were Dosan's 16th and 17th of the season.

St. Cloud Cathedral 11, East Grand Forks 5

EAST GRAND FORKS - Jaeger Wood scored four goals and John Hirschfeld and Joey Gillespie each had six points as defending state Class 1A champion St. Cloud Cathedral beat East Grand Forks 11-5 at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

The teams combined for eight goals in a wild second period that ended with No. 5-1A Cathedral (12-7-2) leading 8-4. Wood scored two of his goals in the second period. He has 13 goals on the season, second behind Hirschfeld and Gillespie's 17 each.

Jace Van Eps scored twice for No. 8-1A East Grand Forks (9-11-1).

Red Lake Falls 6, International Falls 4

RED LAKE FALLS - Red Lake Falls scored four unanswered goals through parts of the second and third periods as it rallied to beat International Falls 6-4 at Cardin-Hunt Arena.

Red Lake Falls (17-3-0) trailed 3-2 when Boe Nelson started the comeback with the first of his three goals, scoring with 4:13 left in the second to tie it at 3-3.

Nelson scored twice more in the third period, his hat trick goal putting Eagles ahead 6-3 with 4:35 left.

Anthony Yerxa led International Falls (12-7-0) with a goal and two assists.

Gentry Academy 3, Northern Lakes 2

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Jaxon Cook's third-period goal allowed Gentry Academy to pick up a 3-2 win over No. 16-1A Northern Lakes at the TCO Sports Garden.

Gentry (13-7-0) scored a goal in each period as Cook's tally gave the Stars a 3-1 lead with 3:36 remaining. The game-winning goal was the second of the season for Cook, a freshman forward.

Wyatt Balmer brought Northern Lakes (13-7-0) within one, 3-2 by scoring with 19 seconds to play.

Jacob Guille and Brock Fairbanks scored Gentry's other goals. Fairbanks was also credited with an assist.
