Hockey Night: Legendary Edina coach honored before game

Jan. 23: Inspired Hornets too much for STMA; Eden Prairie sinks Minnetonka; Holy Family holds off Duluth Marshall

Edina 9, St. Michael-Albertville 0

EDINA - Former Edina coach Willard Ikola, who passed away Monday night at age 92, was honored in a ceremony before Edina's game against St. Michael-Albertville on Thursday night at Braemar Arena. 

The pregame honoring of Ikola ended with one of his signature houndstooth hats put on permanent display behind the Hornets' bench. Ikola led Edina to eight state championships in 19 appearances in his 33 years leading the program.

The No. 5-2A Hornets played inspired hockey, beating the Knights 9-0 to improve to 13-5-0. Wyatt Spindler made 13 saves for the shutout and Caleb Pittsley and Tucker Johnson each scored twice.

Lucas Ingebritson stopped 25 shots for St. Michael-Albertville (8-8-0).

Eden Prairie 3, Minnetonka 0

EDEN PRAIRIE - Bennett Willmer stopped 16 shots and Eden Prairie scored two empty net goals in the closing minute as it beat Minnetonka 3-0 in a Lake Conference showdown at the Eden Prairie Community Center.

Cole Pitzl's first-period goal held up as the winner for No. 16-2A Eden Prairie (9-7-2). 

Ben Ferguson stopped 28 of 29 shots for No. 14-2A Minnetonka (10-7-1).

Nash Saterdale and Alex Hall scored the empty net goals for the Eagles.

Holy Family 5, Duluth Marshall 4

DULUTH - Bryce Wiitala scored twice and Cameron Dean had a goal and two assists as Holy Family held on to beat Duluth Marshall 5-4 at Mars Lakeview Arena.

Goals by Sawyer Graubins late in the second period and Wiitala early in the third put No. 17-2A Holy Family (12-6-0) ahead 5-3.

Braydon Hannula scored with 1:10 left to pull the Hilltoppers (9-7-2) to within a goal.

Holy Family outshot Duluth Marshall 51-28.

Roseau 3, Warroad 2

ROSEAU - Jude Wittrock's goal with 6:55 remaining lifted Roseau past Warroad 3-2 at Roseau Memorial Arena in the matchup of longtime neighboring Canadian border-town rivals.

Isaac Baumgartner and Jake Halvorson also scored for the Rams (10-10-1), who got a 33-save performance from Abram Hinson.

Warroad's Sam Hard opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period. Finn Hanson made 19 saves for the No. 3-1A Warriors (12-5-1).

Warroad won the season's first meeting between the teams, 2-1 on Jan. 7 in Warroad.

Minneapolis 4, Eagan 3 OT

EAGAN - Johan Krasean scored 3:36 into overtime as No. 9-1A Minneapolis scored the game's last three goals to pick up a 4-3 win over Eagan.

Minneapolis (10-4-3) trailed 3-1 entering the third period but got goals from Nik Nordeen and Aaron Murphy to force overtime.

Eagan (3-16-0) had a 2-0 lead after goals by Blake Prouty and then led 3-1 when Gavin Luhrs scored with four minutes left in the second. Prouty leads Eagan with 10 goals.

The win was the 175th for Minneapolis head coach Joe Dziedzic.

Monticello 5, Little Falls 1

MONTICELLO - Nathan Poeppel scored on the power play early in the second period as part of five-straight Monticello goals as the Moose defeated Little Falls 5-1 in a battle of ranked teams  at Moose Sherritt Ice Arena.

No. 12-1A Little Falls (10-5-2) took the lead when Ryan Oothoudt scored but No. 6-1A Monticello (17-1-1) evened the game with Brady Lerberg's goal with 5:02 left in the first.

Poeppel's power-play goal came 2:58 into the second. Liam O'Donnell scored later in the period before Ashton Stoll and Brady McGriff netted goals in the third.

Logan Blahnik made 20 saves for Monticello, which has won four straight.

Maple Grove 4, Elk River/Zimmerman 2

ELK RIVER - A shorthanded goal by Brady Aubut gave Maple Grove the lead early in the second period and the Crimson held on for a 4-2 win over Elk River/Zimmerman at the Elk River Ice Arena. The win was head coach Todd Bergland's 200th at Maple Grove.

Maple Grove (10-6-1) and Elk River/Zimmerman (6-11-2) traded two-goal outbursts in the first. Aubut scored first for the Crimson before Jacob Barber scored shorthanded with 10:08 left in the period. The Elks tied the score with goals by Tristan Kriech and Logan Rustad.

Barber added an empty-net goal.

Rogers 4, Totino-Grace 2

ROGERS - No. 3-2A Rogers scored the game's last three goals as the Royals rallied for a 4-2 win over Totino-Grace at the Rogers Ice Arena.

Rogers (16-1-1) trailed 2-1 after the first period as Totino-Grace (8-6-1) got goals from Liam Hamre and Oliver Hay.

The Royals started their comeback when Matty Hauser tied the game 2:02 into the second before Mason Jenson, who is tied with Moorhead's Mason Kraft for the state scoring lead, gave Rogers the lead with 2:53 left in the period.

Avenir Belous scored Rogers' final goal.
