PLYMOUTH - Holy Angels took a big step toward earning a top-three seed in the Section 6AA playoffs with a 4-1 victory over Wayzata at Plymouth Ice Center in one of four games played statewide on Wednesday night.
Henry Lechner scored his state-leading 33rd goal of the season early in the second period to put No. 10-2A Holy Angels (15-2-1) ahead 3-0.
Colin Bierman scored the lone goal for No. 12-2A Wayzata (11-7-2).
Edina, Wayzata and Benilde-St. Margaret's have dominated the top of the section for most of the past decade, but the victory by the Stars could break up the top trio.
Holy Angels plays Benilde-St. Margaret's on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at Richfield Ice Arena in another game with big seeding implications.
ST. CLOUD - Senior forward John Hirschfeld had a hand in all seven St. Cloud Cathedral goals, scoring twice and assisting on the other five, as the Crusaders rallied to beat Princeton 7-5 at the Municipal Athletic Complex.
Dominic Patnode scored three goals for Princeton (5-12-0), which led 4-3 in the second and 5-4 midway through the third.
Bo Schmidt, Mason Layne and Joey Gillespie scored in the final 6 minutes for No. 5-1A St Cloud Cathedral (10-7-2), the defending state Class 1A champion. Gillespie's goal came with 1:22 remaining and put the Crusaders ahead 7-5.
Hirschfeld's seven-point night gives him a team-leading 39 points this season. Gillespie has 33 points, including a team-leading 15 goals.
SHAKOPEE - Christian Garrity and Gavin McNeil each scored twice as Rosemount beat Eastview 6-3 in an outdoor game with Valleyfair thrill rides serving as the backdrop.
Cade Sherman had a goal and two assists and Christian Nichols three assists for the No. 7-2A Irish (19-2-0).
Sam Wooten scored twice in the second period for Eastview (8-9-0).
The same site will host Saturday's regionally televised Hockey Day festivities, including games between Eden Prairie and Hibbing/Chisholm (8:30 a.m.) and Shakopee and Maple Grove (2:30 p.m.).
CHASKA - Devin O'Donnell scored twice in the second period as Mahtomedi pulled away from Chaska for an eventual 7-3 victory at Chaska Community Center.
The score was tied 2-2 after the opening period. No. 11-1A Mahtomedi (6-10-2) surged to a 5-3 lead entering the third thanks to O'Donnell's two goals and another from Laken Decker.
Zach Zins and Decker added third-period goals for the Zephyrs.
Tyler Hromatka and Mason Gutowsky scored first-period goals for Chaska (1-14-1).
