Hockey Night: Little Falls outlasts Northern Lakes

Jan. 21: Luke Avery scores winner for Flyers; Hill-Murray tops BSM; Monticello holds off Providence Academy

Little Falls 2, Northern Lakes 1 OT

LITTLE FALLS - Senior forward Luke Avery scored 59 seconds into overtime as Little Falls beat Northern Lakes 2-1 at Exchange Arena on Tuesday for the Flyers' third overtime tie or victory in their last games.

Avery collected a rebound to the right of the Northern Lakes goal and fired a shot over a sliding Lighting defenseman and past goaltender Sam Suja. Three of Avery's five goals this season have come in overtime games, and the goal against the Lightning was his first game-winner.

Ryan Oothoudt scored for No. 12-1A Little Falls (10-4-2) in the third period to tie the score at 1-1.

Jerome Martin scored the lone goal for No. 16-1A Northern Lakes (10-6-0).

Izaak Kalis made 31 saves to earn the victory for the Flyers. Suja stopped 34 of 36 shots for the Lightning.

Hill-Murray 4, Benilde-St. Margaret's 2

MAPLEWOOD - Riley Zupfer and Caden Zasada scored second-period goals to help boost Hill-Murray past Benilde-St. Margaret's 4-2 at Aldrich Arena. 

The goals by Zupfer and and Zasada gave No. 4-2A Hill-Murray (15-1-1) a 3-1 lead heading into the third.

Nick Johnson pulled No. 11-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's (11-5-0) to within 3-2 late in the third, but Zasada's empty-net goal with 47 seconds left clinched the victory.

Junior Podein also scored for Benilde-St. Margaret's.

Monticello 3, Providence Academy 2

MONTICELLO - Logan Blahnik made 29 saves and Landen Scherber and Aidan Widmark each had a goal and an assist as Monticello slipped past Providence Academy 3-2 at Moose Sherritt Ice Arena.

Jacob Weidenbach scored the lone goal of the second period, putting No. 6-1A Monticello (16-1-1) ahead 3-1.

William Stricker scored a power-play goal in the opening minute of the third period for Providence Academy (10-7-2).

Stillwater 4, Roseville 1

STILLWATER - Stillwater scored twice in the first period and never looked back in a 4-1 win over Roseville at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

The No. 9-2A Ponies (13-3-0), who have won four-straight games, took the lead on goals by Luca Jarvis and Brody Dustin.

After Roseville (11-8-0) cut the lead to 2-1 on Grant Jakaboski's power-play goal, Trey Fredenberg scored for Stillwater to make it 3-1 after two periods.

Tate Batchelor's power-play goal in the third completed the scoring.

Landon Huber made 15 saves for the Ponies.

Minnesota River 4, Mankato West 3 OT

LE SUEUR - Ryker Rehm scored with 2:31 left in overtime to give Minnesota River a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Mankato West at the Le Sueur Community Center.

The Bulldogs (9-8-0) trailed 3-1 in the second period before Kaden Throldahl scored with 3:29 left in the period.

Throldahl then scored on a power play in the third to force overtime. Throldahl opened the scoring for Minnesota River, which then saw Mankato West break out for three straight goals, two by Jaeger Zimmerman.

Champlin Park 2, Elk River 1

CHAMPLIN - Cole Perkins' power-play goal early in the third period held up as the game winner as Champlin Park defeated Elk River/Zimmerman 2-1 at the Champlin Ice Forum.

Elk River/Zimmerman (6-10-2) had a 1-0 lead when Luke Patraw scored with 4:44 to play in the first. Champlin Park (11-7-0) tied it with Brent Solomon's goal with 15 seconds left in the period.

After a scoreless second, Perkins scored on the power play with 14:10 to play.

Gavin Greniuk madÄ™ 33 saves for Elk River/Zimmerman. Tanner Wylie stopped seven of eight shots for the Rebels.

Solomon's goal was his 26th of the season, fourth-most in the state.

Red Lake Falls 4, Bagley/Fosston 3

RED LAKE FALLS - Kegan Schmitz scored with 26 seconds left in regulation to give Red Lake Falls a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Bagley/Fosston at Cardin-Hunt Arena.

Red Lake Falls (16-3-0) trailed 3-2 entering the third period. The Eagles got goals from Riley Broden and Boe Nelson to take a 2-0 lead but saw Bagley/Fosston (9-8-0) score three-straight goals to close the second. Wyatt Gerbacht scored two of Flyers' goals.

Brock Seeger tied the score with 9:29 to play, setting the stage for Schmitz's game-winning goal. The win was the sixth straight for the Eagles.

Moorhead 7, Roseau 1

ROSEAU - No. 1-2A Moorhead (18-1-0) scored twice in a span of 13 seconds in the first period and never looked back in a 7-1 win over Roseau at Roseau Memorial Arena.

The Spuds, winners of 18-straight games, opened the scoring with a power-play goal by Brooks Cullen 5:45 left in the first. Evan Wanner then made it 2-0 when he scored 13 seconds later.

Moorhead led 3-0 after the first and 5-0 after two periods.

Mason Kraft and Wanner each scored two goals. Brandon Mickelson added three assists for the Spuds. Kraft's four-point night gives him 57 points (25 goals, 32 assists) this season, placing him second in the state in points.

Tyler George scored in the third period for Roseau (9-10-1).
