Hockey Night: Late goal lifts CDH past White Bear Lake

Jan. 18: Max Bennett lifts Raiders past Bears; Hill-Murray shuts out Grand Rapids; Two Rivers, Mahtomedi skate to tie

Cretin-Derham Hall 2, White Bear Lake 1

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Max Bennett scored late in the third period as Cretin-Derham Hall topped White Bear lake 2-1 at TCO Sports Garden in a showdown of Suburban East Conference leaders and top-eight ranked Class 2A teams.

Bennett, a senior forward, broke into the White Bear Lake end on a 2-on-1 rush, elected to shoot and whistled a high shot that beat standout White Bear Lake goaltender Leo Gabriel. The goal came with 7:16 remaining.

The No. 6-2A Raiders (14-2-1) remained unbeaten in the Suburban East at 9-0-0. No. 8-2A White Bear Lake (11-3-2) suffered its first conference loss, dropping to 8-1-1 in league play.

Owen Nelson made 18 saves for Cretin-Derham Hall, improving to 12-2-1. 

Blake Eckerle scored in the first period for White Bear Lake and John King answered in the second for Cretin-Derham Hall.

Bennett's goal was his team-leading 14th of the season. 

The teams are scheduled to meet again on Feb. 15 at Highland Arena in St. Paul.

Hill-Murray 4, Grand Rapids 0

MAPLEWOOD - Junior Grayson Hanggi made 21 saves to earn the shutout as Hill-Murray beat Grand Rapids 4-0 at Aldrich Arena in a showdown of longtime state powerhouses.

The shutout was the second straight and third of the season for Hanggi, who ranks fourth in the state with a 1.40 goals-against average.

Tommy Miller's second-period goal opened the scoring, and the No. 4-2A Pioneers (14-1-1) tacked on three more goals in the third period.

Miller and Boden Sampair each had a goal and an assist.

Carter Casey was busy in goal for the No. 13-2A Thunderhawks (12-5-0), stopping 42 shots. The loss was the second in as many nights for Grand Rapids, which fell to White Bear Lake 5-1 on Friday.

Mahtomedi 3, Two Rivers 3 OT

WEST ST. PAUL - Matthew Heymans scored with 1:23 left in regulation, forcing overtime as Two Rivers tied Mahtomedi 3-3 at West St. Paul Arena.

Two Rivers (11-3-2) led 2-1 entering the third on a pair of Eddie Auran goals. 

No. 10-1A Mahtomedi (5-10-2) pulled ahead 3-2 on back-to-back goals by Winston Wright in the third period.

Hermantown 3, Shakopee 2 OT

HERMANTOWN - Charlie Marchand scored with 58 seconds left in overtime as Hermantown rallied to beat Shakopee 3-2 at Hermantown Arena.

No. 12-2A Shakopee (13-5-1) led 2-0 on first-period goals by Tristin Wassengeso and Nate Peterson. The score stayed that way until early in the third, when Henry Peterson's power-play goal pulled No. 1-1A Hermantown (11-4-3) to within 2-1.

Alex Nicklin's goal with 4:31 left in regulation pulled the Hawks into a 2-2 tie.

Owen Lunneborg made 17 saves for Shakopee. Hermantown's Bryce Francisco, the state leader with a .951 save percentage, stopped 42 of 44 shots.

Benilde-St. Margaret's 4, Chanhassen 3

VICTORIA - Junior Podein scored with 7 seconds remaining as Benilde-St. Margaret's beat Chanhassen 4-3 in a hotly contested Metro West Conference matchup at Victoria Recreation Center. 

No. 11-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's (11-4-0) scored four of the five final goals, including a pair by A.J. Ulrich in the second period, as it rallied from a 2-0 second-period deficit.

Theo Koubeck scored twice for Chanhassen (5-11-0), including the third-period goal that tied it at 3-3.

Bemidji 3, Roseau 1

BEMIDJI - Joey Fankhanel scored late in the second period and Conor Stodgell scored early in the third as Bemidji beat Roseau 3-1 in a showdown of Section 8AA teams at Bemidji Community Arena.

Tate Metcalf stopped 18 shots for the No. 19-2A Lumberjacks (11-3-1).

Jacksyn Loken scored the lone goal for Roseau (9-9-1).

Moorhead 6, Wayzata 3

MOORHEAD - No. 1-2A Moorhead scored the game's first four goals and then hung for a 6-3 win over No. 14-2A Wayzata at the Moorhead Sports Center.

Brooks Cullen scored twice in the first period for the Spuds (17-1-0). He is one of five players with 10-or-more goals for Moorhead.

Wayzata (11-6-2) got on the scoreboard with a power-play goal by Christopher Pyle with 1:51 to play in the second.

Mason Kraft, who also recorded three assists, gave the Spuds a 5-1 lead with 34 seconds left in the second. The Minnesota State commit is tied for second in the state with 53 points.

The Trojans made it 5-2 only to see Moorhead's Evan Wanner push the lead to 6-2 with a goal with 2:36 to play. Jackson Hendricks scored 30 seconds later for the final margin.

Blake 8, Rochester Century/John Marshall 0

ROCHESTER - Joe Erickson's five-point night led Blake to an 8-0 win over Rochester Century/John Marshall at Graham Arena.

Erickson recorded a goal in each period for the Bears (10-5-0). He leads Blake with 15 goals and 15 assists.

Landon Bell and Axel Bisbee each added two goals for Blake.

Fuzz Aafeldt made 26 saves for the shutout.

Rochester Century/John Marshall is now 13-4-0.

St. Paul Johnson 2, Greenway 2 OT

COLERAINE - Isaiah Henderson's second goal of the contest came with 3:13 left in regulation as St. Paul Johnson and Greenway played to a 2-2 overtime draw at Hodgins-Berardo Arena.

Greenway (5-8-1) took a 2-0 lead on goals by Hayden Clow and Damien Mandich before Henderson found the net with 1:40 left in the first.

Henderson leads the Governors (4-9-2) with 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists).

Both St. Paul Johnson's Justin Kasper and Greenway's Blayne Kelly made 26 saves.
