Hockey Night: Hermantown overpowers Hibbing

Jan. 17: River Freeman's hat trick propels Hawks; White Bear Lake eases past Grand Rapids; Cloquet outlasts Orono

Hermantown 6, Hibbing/Chisholm 3

HIBBING - River Freeman scored three goals, the last into an empty net with 1:26 remaining, to lead Hermantown past Hibbing/Chisholm 6-3 on Friday in a matchup of top-three Class 1A teams and Section 7A powerhouses.

Freeman scored one of three unanswered first-period goals for the No. 1-1A Hawks (10-4-3) as they built a 3-1 lead.

Jace Kampsula scored in the opening minute of the second period to pull the No. 3-1A Bluejackets (10-7-0) to within 3-2.

Ford Skytta scored a power-play goal late in the second period and Freeman scored in the first minute of third as the Hawks surged to a 5-2 lead.

Freeman leads Hermantown with 21 goals.

White Bear Lake 5, Grand Rapids 1

VADNAIS HEIGHTS - Jack Stanius scored twice and added an assist and Leo Gabriel stopped 18 of 19 shots as White Bear Lake cruised past Grand Rapids 5-1 at the TCO Sports Garden.

No. 8-2A White Bear Lake (11-2-2) built a 5-0 lead heading into the third period on Blake Eckerle's goal with 1:54 left in the second.

Nathan Garski scored the lone goal for No. 13-2A Grand Rapids (12-4-0), which has its seven-game winning streak snapped.

Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 3, Orono 1

LONG LAKE - Grady Knutson scored twice in the first period and James Halverson stopped 33 shots as Cloquet/Esko/Carlton beat Orono 3-1 at Orono Ice Arena.

Ethan Pagel scored the lone goal of the second period pulling the No. 11-1A Spartans  to within 2-1 heading into the third.

Karson Young's empty-net goal in the final minute clinched the victory for the No. 2-1A Lumberjacks (14-3-0), who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Little Falls 1, Thief River Falls 1 OT

THIEF RIVER FALLS - Little Falls junior Izaak Kalis stopped 47 shots, including seven in the overtime period, as the Flyers skated to a 1-1 tie with Thief River Falls at the Huck Olson Memorial Civic Center.

Luke Avery scored a first-period goal for No. 12-1A Little Falls (8-4-2), and Jaxon Hams scored in the second period for Thief River Falls (6-8-1).

The Prowlers' Cooper Roff was also superb in goal, making 30 saves.

Lakeville South 4, Lakeville North 0

LAKEVILLE - Carson Hauger made 25 saves for the shutout and Brayden Olsen scored twice as Lakeville South beat intracity rival Lakeville North 4-0 at Hasse Arena.

Oscar Balkins and Jack Starfield also scored for the Cougars (8-8-0). 

Carter Mayfield stopped 29 shots for Lakeville North (6-10-1).

Cambridge-Isanti 8, Princeton 5

ISANTI - The Rusty Skates Rivalry provided plenty of fireworks in the third period as the teams combined to score nine third-period goals in Cambridge-Isanti's 8-5 triumph over Princeton at Isanti Ice Arena.

Princeton (5-11-0) scored all five of its goals in the final period, but the comeback came too late as Cambridge-Isanti (7-9-1) built a 4-0 lead heading into the final period and led 7-1 with 10:41 remaining.

Caleb Wisen, Jackson Ziebarth and Josh Sauro each scored twice for Cambridge-Isanti.

Lane Olson had a goal and three assists for Princeton.
