Hockey Night: Late goals lift Warroad past EGF

Jan. 16: Wyatt Hennum's first goal of the season boosts Warriors; Waseca suffers first loss of the season; Cretin-Derham Hall beats Woodbury in OT

Warroad 3, East Grand Forks 1

EAST GRAND FORKS - Ryan Shaugabay scored twice and Finn Hanson stopped 27 of 28 shots as Warroad topped East Grand Forks 3-1 on Thursday at the East Grand Forks Civic Center in a matchup of the likely top seeds in Section 8A.

Shaugabay, a junior forward, scored a power-play goal 10:26 into the second period to put No. 4-1A Warroad (11-4-1) ahead 1-0. Jace Panzer answered for No. 8-1A East Grand Forks (8-7-1) 27 seconds later.

Senior forward Wyatt Hennum's goal with 3:46 left in the third period proved to be the game-winner. The goal was his first of the season.

Shaugabay added an empty net goal with 10 seconds remaining.

Hanson improved to 6-2-0 with the victory.

Rochester Lourdes 3, Waseca 2

ROCHESTER - Jaxson Keefe's goal midway through the third period held up as the winner as Rochester Lourdes beat Waseca 3-2 at Graham Arena, handing the Bluejays their first loss of the season.

No. 14-1A Waseca (13-1-2) entered the game as the state's last unbeaten team, but the Bluejays fell behind 2-0 after second-period power-play goals by the Eagles' Nolan DuBois and Jack Phillips.

Otto Schoenrock scored 16 seconds into the final period to pull Waseca to within 2-1. Hunter Anderson's goal got the Bluejays to within 3-2 with 4:02 remaining.

Cretin-Derham Hall 4, Woodbury 3 OT

ST. PAUL - Max Bennett scored 3:26 into overtime as Cretin-Derham Hall beat Woodbury 4-3 at Highland Arena.

Cam Autrey started the winning play by pouncing on a turnover at the red line. He then fed Bennett as they crossed the blue line, and Bennett rocketed a high shot over Woodbury goaltender Jett Strub's catching glove.

Easton Talbot scored with 42 seconds remaining for Woodbury  (5-11-1) to force the extra session.

Strub finished with 72 saves.

Dawson Kloek scored twice for No. 6-2A Cretin-Derham Hall (14-2-1).

Minneapolis 4, Delano 2

DELANO - Eli Milinkovich scored twice and John Krasean's goal early in the third period held up as the game winner as Minneapolis upended Delano 4-2 at Delano Area Sports Arena.

Krasean put No. 13-1A Minneapolis (9-4-3) ahead 3-1 3:31 into the third period. Mason Hargarten pulled the No. 7-1A Tigers (7-9-0) to within 3-2 just 13 seconds after Krasean's goal. 

Milinkovich scored on a power-play with 5:53 left. He leads Minneapolis with 13 goals, one more than Krasean.

Monticelllo 3, Chisago Lakes 2 OT

MONTICELLO - Junior forward Liam O'Donnell scored 3:44 into overtime to as Monticello rallied from a late two-goal deficit to beat Chisago Lakes 3-2 at Moose Sherritt Ice Arena.

The No. 6-1A Moose (15-1-1) trailed 2-0 with 8:58 remaining when Ashton Stoll and Nicklas Nelson scored to forge a 2-2 tie. Nelson's goal came with 39 seconds left win regulation.

Austin Slettom and Nicklas Nelson scored second-period goals for the Wildcats.

Northern Lakes 1, River Lakes 0

RICHMOND - Jerome Martin scored the lone goal with 2:27 remaining as Northern Lakes beat River Lakes 1-0 in a matchup of top-20 Class 1A teams.

No. 15 Northern Lakes' Sam Suja stopped all 18 shots he faced for his sixth shutout of the season, tied for the most in the state. 

Hawken Swanstrom made 29 saves for No. 18 River Lakes (10-5-2).

Northern Lakes improved to 9-5-0 with the victory.

Providence Academy 6, Breck 6 OT

GOLDEN VALLEY - Ian Grussing scored twice in the third period, his third and fourth goals of the game, as Breck rallied to earn a 6-6 tie with Providence Academy at Anderson Ice Arena.

It was an improbable tie for Breck (4-9-1), which trailed 2-0 in the first period, 5-2 in the second period and 6-4 in the third.

Gabriel Erickson scored twice for Providence Academy (10-6-2).

St. Thomas Academy 5, Mahtomedi 1

MENDOTA HEIGHTS - Jackson Rudh had a goal and three assists as St. Thomas Academy recorded a 5-1 win over Mahtomedi in a battle of ranked teams at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.

Rudh, who now has a team-high 17 goals, was one of five goal scorers for the Cadets (14-2-0).

No. 2-2A St. Thomas Academy got goals from Rudh, William Dosan and Peter Murray in the first period. Gus Olson added a goal in the second and Cole Braunshausen gave the Cadets a 5-0 lead 53 seconds into the third period.

Joey Pipes scored for the No. 10-1A Zephyrs (5-10-1).

Cody Niesen made 19 saves for St. Thomas Academy.
