Hockey Night: Grand Rapids works OT to beat Cloquet

Jan. 14: Seth Carlson scores winner for Thunderhwaks; Breck beats Blake in overtime; Red Lake Falls stuns Detroit Lakes

Grand Rapids 4, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 3 OT

GRAND RAPIDS - Seth Carlson scored 3:22 into overtime to lift Grand Rapids past Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 4-3 on Tuesday at Yanmar Arena.

No. 13-2A Grand Rapids (12-3-0) trailed 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 but pulled out the victory thanks to Dylan Clafton's goal that tied the score at 3-3 early in the third period and then Carlson's winner.

Carlson was left unattended in the slot and one-timed a pass for the clinching goal. Carlson, a junior forward, scored twice, giving him six goals on the season, third-most on the Thunderhawks.

Grady Knutson, Lucas Gentillini and Bobby Thornton scored for No. 2-1A Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (13-3-0), which lost for the second time in as many outings.

The Lumberjacks' Jacob Iallonardo, who ranks second in the state in both save percentage (.947) and goals-against average (1.24) surrendered more than three goals for the first time this season.

Carter Casey made 30 saves for Grand Rapids.

Breck 4, Blake 3 OT

HOPKINS - Junior forward Wesley Robbins scored 29 seconds into overtime to lift Breck past Blake 4-3 at Blake Ice Arena in a matchup of longtime private-school rivals.

Blake (8-5-0) led 2-0 entering the third on goals from Kellen Matushak and Eli Crosby. 

Breck outscored Blake 3-1 in the final period, and the Mustangs' Cooper Klinck scored with 57 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 3-3.

Robbins also scored in the third period for Breck (4-9-0). The goals were his third and fourth of the season.

Blake beat Breck 6-3 on Jan. 4 in the teams' previous meeting.

Red Lake Falls 3, Detroit Lakes 2

DETROIT LAKES - Sophomore forward Boe Nelson scored twice in the third period and Draven Wirth made 41 saves as Red Lake Falls surprised Detroit Lakes 3-2 at Freeman Sports Arena.

The teams were tied 1-1 through two periods. Nelson put the Eagles (14-3-0) ahead 2-1 3:54 into the third and aded his second goal to make it 3-1 with 6:48 left.

William Cymbaluk scored with 24 seconds for No. 16-1A Detroit Lakes (7-7-1), which pulled goaltender Griffin Lindberg in favor of an extra skater in the closing minutes.

Nelson's 18 goals rank second on the Eagles to the 24 for Gavin Girdler, who scored in the first period.

Waseca 1, New Prague 1 OT

NEW PRAGUE - Waseca's Carter Martens and New Prague's Coly Murphy made a combined 66 saves as the teams skated to a 1-1 overtime tie at New Prague Community Center.

No. 14-1A Waseca (13-0-2) remained the state's last unbeaten team, thanks in part to Martens' stellar goaltending (29 saves) and Brayden Hesch-Priem's second-period goal that put the Bluejays ahead 1-0.

Connor Williams scored a power-play goal early in the third period for New Prague (5-6-2).

Rosemount 4, Eagan 3 OT

EAGAN - Connor Schubert scored 5:32 into overtime to lift Rosemount past Eagan 4-3 at Eagan Civic Arena.

Cade Sherman's goal 1:24 into the third period put No. 7-2A Rosemount (16-2-0) ahead 3-1. Eagan (3-13-0) rallied on goal from Charlie Forester and Jake Holman. 

Rosemount outshot Eagan 5-2 in the overtime period and 49-12 overall. Jonathan Rossman made 45 saves for the Wildcats.

Forest Lake 3, Duluth East 2 OT

FOREST LAKE - Blake Jacobson's power-play goal 29 seconds into overtime gave Forest Lake a 3-2 victory over Duluth East at the Forest Lake Sports Center.

Forest Lake led 2-1 entering the third, when Landon Pearce scored for Duluth East (2-13-0) in the opening minute to tie it at 2-2.

Eighth-grader Maverick McKinnon scored his team-leading 16th goal of the season for Forest Lake (8-8-0). McKinnon also has a team-best 33 points.

Monticello 2, Pine City 0

PINE CITY - Nathan Poeppel scored both goals and Logan Blahnik stopped 25 shots as Monticello beat Pine City 2--0 at the Pine City Civic Center.

Poeppel, a senior forward, scored in the third and third periods for the No. 6-1A Moose (14-1-1). Blahnik's shutout was his state-leading sixth of the season.

Aaron Rookie made 43 saves for Pine City (8-6-1).
