ST. CLOUD - Senior forward John Hirschfield scored twice in the first period and St. Cloud Cathedral held on to beat Monticello 2-1 at the Municipal Athletic Complex on Saturday, handing the Moose their first loss of the season.
Hirschfeld, a senior forward and key cog on Cathedral's state Class 1A championship team last season, scored both his goals in the second half of the opening period as the No. 6-1A Crusaders (8-6-2) built a 2-0 lead.
Brady McGriff scored in the second period for No. 5-1A Monticello (13-1-1).
Keaton LaGrande stopped 34 of 35 shots for Cathedral to earn the victory. Hirschfeld's goals give him seven on the season.
With Monticello's loss, Waseca becomes the state's lone undefeated team in either class at 13-0-1.
WARROAD - Jaxsen Ericksen and Bode Madill scored third-period goals as Hermantown pulled away for a 4-1 victory over Warroad at The Gardens Arena.
Ericksen's goal, his first of the season, put the No. 1-1A Hawks (9-4-3) ahead 3-1 with 3:17 remaining. Madill scored shorthanded into an empty net with 22 seconds left.
Hermantown's Ford Skytta and Warroad's Broden Hontvet traded first-period goals. The loss halted a six-game win streak for the No. 4-1A Warriors (10-4-1).
CLOQUET - Andrew Bolliger scored 3:54 into the overtime period as Sartell-St. Stephen knocked off Cloquet/Esko/Carlton, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 1A, 2-1 at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center.
Caden Vos also scored for the Sabres (6-6-1), who have won four of their last five games.
Grady Knutson scored for Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (13-2-0).
MOORHEAD - Zac Zimmerman broke a 3-3 tie with his goal with 6:38 remaining to lead No. 1-2A Moorhead to a 5-3 win over No. 11-2A Benilde-St. Margaret's at the Moorhead Sports Center.
The Spuds, now 15-1-0, added to lead when Tyden Bergeson scored with 1:18 remaining.
The Red Knights (9-4-0) led 1-0 after the first before Mason Kraft, scored twice in the second period for Moorhead.
Benilde-St. Margaret's tied the score with a Keegan Davis' power-play goal with 11:15 to play. Max Cullen gave Moorhead the lead with 8:17 to play only to see Davis score 46 seconds later for a 3-3 tie, setting up Zimmerman's game-winner.
Kraft recorded two goals and two assists, placing him second in the state with 48 points. Bergeson also was credited with two assists.
PLYMOUTH - Eden Prairie scored three goals in the final 8:08 to forge a 6-6 tie with Wayzata at the Plymouth Ice Center in a matchup of ranked Class 2A teams.
No. 12-2A Wayzata (9-5-2) scored five of the game's first six goals, taking a 5-1 lead when Drew Peterson scored with 3:31 left in the second.
No. 15-2A Eden Prairie (6-7-2) started its comeback when Alex Hall scored with 1:12 left in the second.
The teams traded goals before the Eagles?? ' Hall scored with 8":08 to play. Mikko Brown brought Eden Prairie within one with a power-play goal before Rio Treharne's second goal of the contest evened the score with 2:52 in regulation.
The Trojans' offensive came from six goal scorers while Tommy Colmenero and Carson Clark each had two assists.
CHASKA - Chanhassen scored three power-play goals as the Storm recorded a 4-1 win over Chaska at the Chaska Community Center.
The Storm (5-10-0) outshot Chaska, 65-13. Logan Smith, Nolan Warner and Jack Gleason each recorded a goal and assist for Chanhassen. Ryan McPartland was credited with three assists, all coming on the power play unit.
Tyler Nesheim made 61 saves for Chaska (1-10-1)
HIBBING - Grand Rapids scored three times in the second period and never looked back in a 4-1 win over Hibbing/Chisholm in a matchup of ranked teams at the Hibbing Memorial Building.
No. 14-2A Grand Rapids (11-3-0) built its lead on goals by Seth Carlson, Luka Rohloff and Caleb Gunderson.
No. 3-1A Hibbing/Chisholm (10-6-0) got on the scoreboard with 4:33 to play when Tate Swanson scored. However, the Thunderhawks' Carlson scored with four seconds left to ice the win.
Carter Casey made 21 saves for Grand Rapids.
OWATONNA - Northfield opened the game with three goals in the first 4:08 and never looked back in a 4-0 win over Big 9 Conference member Owatonna at Four Seasons Centre.
No. 9-1A Northfield added goals in the second and third periods.
Owatonna is now 6-8-0.
Gavin Winter made 14 saves for the Raiders (10-2-0)
The game was hampered by 86 penalty minutes, 76 of those coming in the second period.
