Hockey Night: Elk River forges tie with Holy Angels

Jan. 9: Tristan Kriech scores late for Elks; River Freeman's hat trick powers Hermantown; CDH tops Stillwater

Holy Angels 1, Elk River/Zimmerman 1

ELK RIVER - Tristian Kriech scored with 1:44 left in regulation as Elk River/Zimmerman forged a 1-1 overtime tie with Holy Angels on Thursday at Furniture and Things Community Event Center.

Kriech was camped out in the crease when he shoveled a rebound shot into an empty net to tie the score. The goal was the junior forward's team-leading 12th of the season.

Henry Lechner's goal 7:09 into the second period put No. 7-2A Holy Angels (11-2-1) ahead 1-0. Lechner leads the state with 26 goals.

Both goaltenders turned in impressive performances. Gavin Greniuk made 30 saves for Elk River (4-8-2). Luke Marsalek stopped 37 shots for the Stars.

Hermantown 6, St. Cloud Cathedral 0

HERMANTOWN - River Freeman scored three unanswered goals in the second period and Bryce Francisco made 35 saves as Hermantown cruised past defending state Class 1A champion St. Cloud Cathedral 6-0 at Hermantown Ice Arena.

Freeman's three-goal flurry put the No. 1-1A Hawks (8-4-3) ahead 4-0 with 2:19 left in the second period. Freeman, a senior forward, leads Hermantown with 18 goals, 12 more than the next highest total.

Francisco's shutout was his fifth of the season, tied for the most in the state. He leads the state with a .954 save percentage.

Blake Kayser stopped 26 shots for No. 6-1A St. Cloud Cathedral (7-6-2).

Cretin-Derham Hall 4, Stillwater 3

STILLWATER - Nate Chorlton's goal late in the second period held up as the winner as Cretin-Derham Hall held on to beat Stillwater 4-3 at the St. Croix Valley Recreation Center.

Max Thompson's power-play goal midway through the second period put No. 6-2A Cretin-Derham Hall (11-2-1) ahead 3-2. Max Bennett and Max Anderson also scored for the Raiders.

Brody Dustin scored late in the third period for No. 10-2A Stillwater (9-3-0), Dustin's second goal of the game.  Luca Jarvis also scored for the Ponies.

Lakeville North 3, East Ridge 2 OT

COTTAGE GROVE - Gunnar Conboy scored 50 seconds into overtime to lift Lakeville North to a 3-2 victory over East Ridge at Cottage Grove Ice Arena.

Conboy also scored in the second period, his goal giving the Panthers (6-8-0) a 2-1 lead.

Ivan Schmitz scored with 55 seconds left in the second period to tie the score at 2-2. Schmitz also scored a shorthanded goal in the first period as East Ridge (6-7-0) took a 1-0 lead.

Winona 4, Austin 2

WINONA - Aven Prodzinski scored twice in the final 1:34 as Winona, after trailing most of the game, rallied to beat Austin 4-2 at Bud King Ice Arena.

Gavin Schaefer scored a goal in each of the first and second periods and Austin (6-5-0) led 2-0 with 5:41 remaining.

Myles Bruemmer and Kaden Grass scored power-play goals to start the comeback for Winona (7-4-0).

Benilde-St. Margaret's 4, Eden Prairie 2

ST. LOUIS PARK - Mason Minor scored a goal and added two assists as Benilde-St. Margaret's beat Eden Prairie 4-2 at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Minor and Noah Johnson scored second-period goals for the No. 11-2A Red Knights (8-3-0), who took a 3-1 lead into the third period.

Junior Podein's goal 2:57 into the this period put Benilde-St. Margaret's ahead 4-1.

Nick Hubbard and Rio Treharne scored for No. 15-2A Eden Prairie (6-6-1).
